We see another orange light on the Edinburgh by-pass. I guess its those pesky sky lanterns again. Why can't they ban them?

What appeared to be a fireball, orange and moving slowly across the sky on march the 6th 2010 at 20.30. Never seen anything like it, it was huge and couldnt have possibly been a plane, took a picture but just looks like a star.

On Sat 06 Mar 2010, I saw a bright orange thing flying in the sky, it looked like it was on fire. At first I thought it was an areoplane but there was no sound. I managed to get in the house and got a quick photo of it as it was going over the house.I phoned my friend a few doors down, and she came out to see it. It was amazing but we were more shocked when it just disappeared into thin air in the distance. We are still trying to work out what it was !!! Amazing.

2nd March 2010 Time 19.45I was just exiting southbound of the A1 Doncaster/Rotherham turn off, onto Balby rounderbout, when I saw three evenly spaced objects to my right static in the sky. The objects looked like three small fireballs in a dead straight line and around 100 meters equal distance apart and around a mile high at a guess. I pulled my car over and watched as two started to move up very slowly and the other stayed still. As I was watching two more appeared to my left heading towards the static one, as I watched the last three of the five slowly went up and disappeared. I hav! e never seen anything like it. It might have been five of those Chinese lanterns but the first three was still for a good two minutes

I saw a flickering yellow/orange light in the sky last night (2 March 2010) at 19:25. It seemed to move, then hover before it dimmed from view. It lasted 3-4 minutes. The only sensible explanation I have for this is a chinese lantern.

I've just seen what looked like a plane, high up , very little if any engine noise, and it appeared to be on fire, with faming debris falling from it. It was moving in a west to east direction very steadily, until it faded from sight probably over the Vale of Glamorgan/Cardiff area! 8pm, Mon 1st March 2010.

I saw a large glowing object in the sky moving west to east over Doncaster after dark on Saturday, 20 February 2010. I followed its trajectory as it looked like a plane on fire. It was quite low and appeared to be travelling at "plane velocity", then it faded and disappeared from view. What was this? An odd meteor - haven't seen anything like this before.

Last night when I got home from work - 0040 I saw a single orange fire ball. It was relitavely low and about the size of a football. It was circular in shape and I could see flames inside this shape. It travelled at about the speed of a helicopter but had no sound and travelled in a straight line in the direction away from Stansted airport. If anyone knows what these could be please shed some light onto this as it freaked me out. It wouldn't have been a chinese lantern at that time of night!

On the 07/02/10 at approx 21:50, for a few minutes my girlfriend and I, saw this bright orange light in the sky, it looked like a ball of fire, though at first sight i thought it was a planet, i then realized it was far too big for a planet, as this orange ball got bigger and slowly disappeared from north to south direction. We still have'nt worked out what it could have been, also being very close to heathrow airport on the aircraft path.

all of your orange balls flying through the sky over the christmas/new years period were in fact, just simple chinese lanterns, childrens toys that are basicaly small hot air balloons. They have been around for thousands of years and although they are very fun and beautiful, they are not paranormal or ufos. How spooky that so so so many people can fool themselves so so easily!!

Some of these sightings may well be genuine fireballs, i.e. pieces of debris from space burning up in the atmosphere, but many of the sightings of multiple orange balls of light, particularly on New Year's Eve, are clearly of Chinese lanterns which have been sparking off UFO reports for years.

On New Years Eve at approx 6.50pm a large fireball travelled over Penarth in a North to South direction. Similar to other sightings it was faster than a plane and maintained a constant height. I thought it was a plane on fire at first. It was round with fire coming off the back of it.

I spotted an orange glow in the sky from my front window a few minutes past 12, my son and i went out to see if it was a firework but then realised it had no sound, was too big a glow and it was travelling at a constant speed. Then we watched another 5 go over one after another all in equal orange brightness however each faded after a minute or so. This is no doubt the strangest thing we have ever seen in the sky, was it just us who seen this tonight?

I saw several brigth oranage lights over a period of about 10 minutes at midnight New Year (2009). I saw them from my garden travel in the western sky (a very clear and frosty night). They seemed tocome from the North West and travel southwards for at least 5 mininutes. I observed that some were singular but some seemed to be in groups of up to 5 spaced out by 50m or more. They travelled faster than planes (which go across our sky regularly)and some were much brighter than others. All were orange and allcontinued into the south western skies. I tried photagrahing and videoing with some results i.e.%2! 0an orange dot and on the video various focus levels (using nightshot). My wife saw them first. I suspect many people saw them due to it being new Years Eve with lots of fireworks about. These though travelled a good 5 mile or more. I thought perhaps they were meteorites or some new fanatstic fireworks.

At approximately 24:15 01/010/2010, both my sister and myself were looking out of the window watching the fire works when we saw a series of lights traveling from all directions (there were approximately 30 lights in total) travelling at a very slow speed and all heading in the same direction. This lasted for about 1 hour. Unfortunately our video camera could not pick up these lights.

I saw one last night, in fact at 3am this morning as I walked my dog after dinner with friends for New Years Eve, this was just over East finchley and I captured what I could on my phone, it was round and bright orange and I initially thought is it a helicopter because it was at a similar height as we have lots of traffic helicopters around here because of the North Circ road, but the shape and colour dispelled this idea and, as I watched I noticed I could hear and dull humming noise. Last summer I also snapped a photo of 3 spherical silver balls moving across the sky in the afternoon and they%2! 0changed formation as they flew, also in the same area.

We've just seen a huge fireball fly across the Oxford sky at aroud 6.30pm. It came fairly close to our house and initially shot up into the air and then seemed to move across the sky. It was like a burning ball of fire - given the number of posts on this is there something we are not being told???

We saw an orange fireball silently crossing the sky over Huntingdon on December 25th 2009 at approximately 8.30pm. The object held a steady speed and height and did not alter course. Our feeling is that it was a piece of space debris burning up in the atmosphere but would appreciate some "professional" input.

It couldn't have been though, as it was travelling probably 5 times faster than the planes normally travel overhead. it disapeared within 15 seconds. It was an extremely bright orange light, like a firework but much bigger, brighter and round!!

Three of us saw three orange lights (fireballs?) in the sky over Fife at about 9.15pm on Sunday 27th December 2009. They were travelling north to south, one a short distance behind the other, quite high up, steady speed, and absolutely silent. We saw two first of all, then the first one seemed to disappear and a third one then appeared at a greater distance behind the second, everything else being identical.

Did anybody else see this? either in the Harwich area or over Feilxstow. Time seen was about 9.45pm.

Just saw a ball of fire;almost looked like a balloon or something, fly across the sky. My wife and kids witnessed this also. We could see the flames. Looked to be about 2000 feet high or so. It was silent and stayed the same altitude and seemed to be about as fast as the jets that we see fly into DFW airport.

I was watching a firework display at my local rugby club when an orange thing came. It was about as bright as the north star and just about as big. For me, it was travelling North-West. Whilst watching the display, 9 came and hovered over the field and then it appeared that it dissolved into thin air. However, at the time, I thought it was just some lanterns which were set into the sky from Abbey Park, which had its own display, but on my way home, another 2 appeared in the sky. A woman next to me said she one yesterday,(7/10/09) and that she followed it around for ages until it e! ventually dissapeared. So this piece of information ruled out the Abbey Park theory. Still on my way home, I saw another 4, making a total of 15. They all seemed to be coming from the direction of the space centre but I don't think they have anything to do with that.Has anyone else seen these? I'm really curious to know what they are.

On bonfire night i saw quite a small orange glowing object in the sky, when i first saw it, it thought it was part of a firework, but i didnt seem to fade when I watched it, there was 3 in the sky so it couldnt of been any type of craft because the lights joined together to make a bigger orange light, Im not sure what it could of been but something unexplained.

Very similar to the above sightings. A silent round orange fireball moving in an easterly direction on Nov 5th at around 10pm. Best guess would be a satellite coming down - but that would mean a lot of dead satellites!

Hi there just reading all your comments and i can tell you that my parents saw the exact same thing around 11 o'clock on october 31st. however at three o'clock in the morning I saw the firery ball looking like it was taking off from the same area as you all saw it disappear, at first i thought it was a firework or something too, but the glow did look like as you say something was on fire, i then thought it may have been a helicopter as we do have police copters quite often over the city; the orange glow then hovered across the sky for at least 3 minutes approx, it then changed direction and flew straight up into the clouds, i don't know many helicopters able to do that, but the cloud cover was quite low so maybe it could have. i hope there was someone else out there who saw this at this time as it was very very strange.

Over Bolton on 27 Oct 2009: Approximately 5:45PMI and couple of others saw what can only be described as something actually flying and on fire. At first looked like an Hot air balloon or a Chinese Lantern, But the shape visible was similar to an aeroplane, black in colour and solid in appearance. I would be interested to find out what this was and if anyone else seen it.

Yes, was around 9 or 10 21-9-09 and from my kitchen window saw 1 orange glow from east and going west before bending away north and dis-appearing into clouds. 30 seconds later exactly were the 1st one came from a second one went accross and took exactly the same path. I got my wife and told here wait here and watch, (she thought is was an Helicopter) but no other flashing lights to indicate this and no noise apart from a plane flying over the 3rd one. I told her wait and watch what was about to come and from where and also where it will go and also when it will disappear. It all happened exactly the same a! nd in total I saw 5, Now if that was a Chinese lantern, then why would it take exactly the same path and go off at the same spot. could be a fluke if that were to happen but then it could be anything.

I saw 1 orange glow in the sky a few weeks ago very high in the sky and moving faster than any plane infact from were i was standing it moved across the sky in 10 seconds where a plane would take around 10 minutes to cross and on friday the 16th at 9pm i saw the same thing again but there where 3 of them traveling at the same speed together and going in and out of each other i have no idea what this could be so i googled it and found this page thought it may be shooting stars

I seen what appeared to be a large fireball in the sky last night (Friday 9th October 2009) at around 7.30pm, it was there for about a good half hour and this definately was not a shooting star or a plane, it was quite large and not hard to miss for anyone who might have been looking up at the sky. I have never seen anything like this before, plus I wasn't the only one to see it.

On saturday 10th oct 19.00 my husband and we saw 3 orange burning lights in the sky that, on getting binoculars looked like a black ball in the center, hovering quite low for about 5 mins then as said in earlier commends, rose quite fast, until it lost the heat and dissapeared,?? disintegrated?? became a star ??? tonight was a clear night. Would a fireball go back up into the atmosphere can anyone let me know the answer to that question?

I saw an orange ball in the sky on the 5th october at about 7.30pm. When I first spotted it, it was quite large and flickering as if it was on fire. as it moved towards the north west it got dimmer and disapeared. I called me family to look, and none of us could explain what it was. Did anyone else see this?

In response to Mark from Ledbury, I saw the same thing on 26 Sep 09. I saw a bright orange light out the front window of my house, roughly to the south east. I went out and watched it for the few minutes it existed, starting from a large solid orange ball with hazy outer ring, travelling slowly to the south with the haze gradually disappearing until it was just a small bright spot. A search on the internet at the time didn't find anything but I did notice that 'fireballs' are common and the name is applied to objects of a certain intensity. I would expect the colour would hint at low orbit debris burning as it skirts the edge of the atmosphere before buring out, possibly metallic. I recall it is not uncommon for satellites and other man-made waste to get back to earth in this way.

I live near Ledbury herefordshire, on Saturday 26 september 2009 night around 2145 – 2200 I saw something strange in the night sky. I was at my back door looking east, to my left (north) appearing above the tops of houses was a large(1/10 the size of the moon) fireball ,Orange in colour, this tracked through the sky for about 2- 3 mins in a north south direction, it then slowly started to fade and then disappear, there was no tail like we see with shooting stars, the item faded out before it had reached the horizon in the south.I called my wife to take a look at itHas anyone else reported this to you?

re Mark Ridout, We were sat out in the garden enjoying a beautiful evening when we saw i'm guessing was the same 'fireball', which was visisble (after we spotted it) for around 30 seconds, travelling South to North across Oxfordshire at about the same time 9.30-10.00, but we only saw one. Didn't know if this was a dead satellite or some other space debris just re-entering earths atmosphere.....either way the kids loved it!....anyboy else see this and have a better explanation than my guess?

Not exactly sure what we saw last night. I was hoping somone else might of seen it. It was around 9.30/10.00pm. Three of us were walking home when we noticed a large fireball type object travelling from South to North. We stood and watched it slowly dissapere for around 45seconds. Then we were astonished to turn around and see another following the same route only this one was brighter hence we could see it for a little longer. They were not travelling all that fast and there was no sound. They appeared to be very high up. Does anyone know what this might of been? I would love to know if anyone else saw it.

At 12.45 a.m on Sun 5th July both my wife and myself saw a very large round ball of bright orange fire travelling West to East in the sky from our bedroom window. Although it lasted less than 2 minutes the sheer size of it and the speed it travelled was unbelievable. I have seen plenty of shooting stars in my life but Nothing as awsome as this. We would love to know what it was and if it crashed to Earth or burnt out.

We saw what we thought was a ball of fire/ small bright orange sun with spikes at 8.45pm over Penn Common. It was originally travelling slowly and then seemed to speed up and disappear up in the sky. As it was a cloudy night it might have gone into the clouds, but seemed to disappear without sight. Did anyone else see this??

I saw what i guess was a shooting star a few nights back. I have seen quite a few shooting stars before though and this one was much bigger, orange and in the sky for a little longer. It was quite spectacular.

These are obviously spectacular events in their own right. On a clear night you've only got to stare at the sky for about 10mins (preferably sitting or lying back)and I can guarantee you'll see a 'shooting star'.
