Good to see so many names of old friends from the past on this vibrant site. I more or less left Knighton at the age of 21 in 1965 having been at Knighton Primary under the care of Mr Waters & Co as mentioned by many others & then on to Presteigne School. I still visit Knighton occasionally to visit my sister Kathleen Cunnington, but have not been since January. I loved growing up in Knighton & reading other peoples accounts brought a lot of good memories of places & people flooding back to me. I still take the odd excellent Sunday roast or Bar meal in the Jockey which has been mentioned by ot! hers so hopefully I'll bump into one or two of you someday. Appart from Presteigne School reunions & funerals I rarely meet any old friends from Knighton but I did bump into Roger Oldbury a few years ago in the shop next to my house in Harlech as we were buying our Sunday newspapers. My best wishes to all who know me & thanks for the memories. I'll try and keep a look out on this site & contribute as the occasion arises.

My family moved to the bungalows (number 24) from Mill Green in I think 1944 when I was 3 years old. They were built as temporary accommodation but were still there when we left Knighton in 1953. Yes, there was a lot of asbestos in them and the walls were lined with sawdust I remember. We had 2 bedrooms and an indoor bathroom, a luxury then. The coal fire in the living room heated the black lead cooking range in the kitchen, and we had a fair sized garden, with lawn to the front and vegetable garden to back and sides. I spent a very happy childhood there, and could ree! l off many names who lived there at that time - the Isherwoods, Eversheds, Haywards, Marshalls, Wrights, Cunningtons etc etc. The new housing estate was in its early stages when we left, and I believe the bungalows were totally demolished in the late 1950s. Happy days.

The recent postings from Bob Henderson,Keith Owen and myself about The Alley(Childs Alley) the Lodging House was mentioned. Well this got me wondering where have all the wandering occasional workers gone?? because in my memory the lodging house always had some residents. Also sometimes one of the regular tramps would stay there. now for that matter where have all the tramps gone??? the radnor border area seemed to have about half a dozen regular ones and then we would sometimes get one passing through. The last tramp that I can recall was one whose name was I believe Charlie Bowen and after many y! ears of wandering the Shropshire,Herefordshire,Radnorshire border took up residence in a disused culvert which years before had fed the millrace at the Cwm Mill his abode in said culvert was below the Knighton Llandrindod road, and he stayed there for some time. However as he goot older the local authority found him a dwelling which he lived in for quite a while. One more point I would like to mention. There have been quite a few posting recently about the factory at Ludlow road school well I remember it being there and I am certain that the outbreak of war more or less coincided with the completion of the school and it was handed over before ever being used. Also I am pretty sure that the Fronhir prefabs were built almost straight away at the outbreak f war.

Two queries for anyone old enough to remember. We think the factory at the school produced carburettors for aircraft. When did it start production? Before or after the ar raids on Coventry in the 1940's? We assume most of the labour originally came from S Wales or Coventry with local people later, the Norton Arms was used as a hostel. We also assume the prefabs were built to house the families of the workforce, when were they built? If you look at various websites Prefabs appear to be Churchills idea sometime in 1944 and most were built after the war.Bernard Edwards told us his father helped build the prefabs, he thought in 1941, they were built by Wimpeys. My wife's mother married an aircraft engineer from S Wales and moved into one in early 1942. Anybody have any ideas and where there might be documentary evidence?PS we had a bit of a reunion at the Jockey in October, including Martin Davies from Presteignem now living in Australia

Many thanks to all who have posted information about the factory in Ludlow Road and what was manufactured there, very interesting. What a shame that often we do not become interested in family history until it is too late to ask the questions.

Hi Tony, you reminded me of a little info that I can add, re the factory and Fronhir. (Which was also known locally as china town), the last of the temporary bungalows were demolished around 1959. I lived in one from 1955 to 1959, thinking back they were probably mostly constructed with asbestos. Of course as well as the people brought into town and housed in Fronhir, many locals worked there and there was also at least one bus that ran daily from Clun bringing workers in.I had an aunt from Clun who told me she had worked there making carburettors for spitfires.

Christine Saunders asked about the background to the factory in the school in Knighton. Over the years I have met or read about a number of people associated with the it. The factory was certainly set up by H M Hobson for the manufacture of aircraft components, specifically carburettor parts although the stated output was usually quoted as munitions. There is a letter in the archives from Donald Healey of Austin Healey fame dated Jan 1942, thanking Philip Parker the Town Clerk for his help in setting up the factory.Lou Holt from Coventry clearly remembers installing machines onto the Parquet floor%! 20of the newly built school. Lou was also a member of the LDV (look duck and vanish ) force that sometimes got lost on manoeuvres around Knighton.A family named Warner from Coventry lived in West Street near the current libraryand a Cliff Boden again from Coventry who spent quite some time in Knighton. It is said the bungalows in Fronhir were built by Wimpeys for the workers at the factory with requests from locals being turned down. Is there anyone left in Knighton who can add to this.

Childs Alley, if I can add a little to the replies of John Jordon and Bob Henderson. The alley can still be seen and was the small walkway from Market Street by Hamers old warehouse past the fire station and going into plough road. Unfortunately it cannot now be used as it is blocked at one end by a small wall and wooden railed fence. With reference to some information found in the book, “Alice's Knighton” Two of the people who lived in these cottages in 1915 were school girls May Morris and Sarah James.

Re the school in Ludlow Rd that was a factory during the war. My aunty Greta Oldbury worked their until the war ended, she married Wilf Evans from Bucknell had a daughter my cousin Wendy, lived in Knighton for a bit before moving to Bucknell. Some of the famiies that came from London lved at Fronhir in pre-fab type houses, after the war I think most went back to London. I can remember one family Alan and Ann Bell, who stayed on at Knighton, their father then started working for himself as a plumber.

Hi to Christine Saunders, Barbara & I would like to see you & Tim but I don't know your address etc. I'm in the phone book if you want to arrange something. Hello to Austin Powell too. I remember that Austin was in to music from a young age...Radio Luxembourg? etc. Talking about music, yes John Jordan I was at the Knighton pop festival in 1970. The Move topped the bill & others included Alexis Korner and The Killing Floor I believe. Elwyn Powell was 1 of the organisers I seem to remember.I also remember that John Jordan used to walk to Lurkenhope each day to see June before they were%! 20married. Other "big" events that I recollect are the BBC radio show "The Archers" broadcast at least once from the Thursday livestock market I think. There are many other names posted here that I recognise and hello to you all: Jim Clay (& brothers John & Peter), Keith Owen, Michael Shaw, Margaret Brindley (Davies), Derek Marriott (& Pauline). Other friends that I haven't seen for years include Nigel Mortimer, Clive Heath, Phil Ash, Tanner Davies, Roger Oldbury. Best wishes to you all and apologies if I've missed you out!.

Well said John Jordan, its good to have someone still in our home as it always will be to me, Bob Henderson and others who had to leave for employment reasons. I do remember evacuees coming to Knighton, I went with my mother to the Church Hall, where there a numerous young children standing around with their sitcases by their sides. My mother approached a girl who was a few years older than me and asked her if she would like to come an stop with us she nodded her had and came home with us. Her name was Edith or Enid Upton and she was from Bootle,Liverpool. I cannot really remember hpw long she stayed with us, but she made friends with girls her own age at Knighton school, and I think she then moved to live with one of them, I think it was Norton St area but am not sure. Two of my cousins from London then came to stay with us as their father was in the Air Force in Egypt and they got bombed in London. Whilst at the Church Hall there were dances held there for the soldiers based at Stanage for training. My mother was in the WVS and they ran a canteen at the dances, agaian Im not sure but i believe the band that played was the one and only Wilf Gough. I have been to Knighton at least once a year ever since i left but missed last year as old age is creeping up fast. Still have friends there and send and receive Xmas cards

So many names I recognise in the many messages posted...all brought back great memories.....Nice to see 'Pop' Waters's name mentioned - he also 'managed' the church choir...Miss Cadwallader, Miss Watkins, Mr. Potter all gave me a wonderful start in life....Another of the teachers Miss Brenda Jones (now Mrs. Peter Davies) lives just a few miles away in Bucknell, where we'll be moving to quite soon. Her sister, Jocelyn, was also a teacher at the Primary School, a building now sadly in a terrible state....I could just fancy a fish and six from Ray Cuthbertson's fish and chip shop ! Anyone care t! o join in the tasty memory ?

Helen Gillespie asks about Childs Alley. I am certain it was knocked down in 1937 because as a small lad I remember sitting on the garden wall at what is now the Plough hotel watching the work being carried out. The place I remember was always referred to as "The Alley" but I have always assumed that it was in fact Childs Alley.

Helen Gillespie asks about Child's Alley. It has gone, I should say that the cottages were pulled-down when the council houses were built on Penybont Road, before WW2, but I can't be sure. The alley used to run from Market Street around the north west base of the castle mound towards Plough Road (Lane?).When I was a boy, the lodging house (occupying the site of the former Feather's pub) was at the Market Street end of the alley. The Fire Station now occupies part of the site. I think I can remember the remains of some of the cottages.Helen, this was! one of the poorest parts of the town, the cottages were small and very basic. What was your ancestor's name? Although I haven't lived in Knighton for about 50 years I'm still very intersted in the town.

My Mum met my Dad Ralph when she came out of London during the war to work in the munitions factory which I believe was in the old Secondary School building in Ludlow Road. Does anyone have any memories of Knighton at this time, how many workers came, where did they live, how were they received, what was the local impact, stuff like that. Very happy Mum married and stayed in Knighton! I have already posted my comments on what a great place it was to grow up in. Hello to Martin Bowlder and thanks for your very kind comments. Interesting that you visit your son in M! alvern Link, Tim and I probably live very close, look us up sometime.

Come on all you Knightonians old and young it is a week since anything appeared on this excellent site.Lets have some thoughts. For example this year it is 60 years since the evacuees came to us from Liverpool(I have noted one has writen here)have none of you got memories of this. It is 40 years since the Knighton Pop Festival, surely someone has something to say about it.Those of you too young to remember the events have heard about them, come on keep the site going with news and views.Otherwise this lively site will become as moribund as our neighbours of 6 miles over the hill.

Last June 14 members of the Bevan family spent a weekend in Knighton.Myself and Philip with June & Jill stayed at Molly's Cottage up the Narrows;what a smashing oldy worldy house;where Page Steadman gave us the usual Knighton welcome.Roger stayed at the Horse & Jockey and the rest of the clan either camped or bed and breakfasted in the near vacinity. The weather was perfect and we had a super forr mile walk along Offa's Dyke. Its about fifty years since I was on Panpunton and possible when I lived in Knighton I did not really appreciate the wonderful countryside in the area. We all spent a super eve! ning in the Horse & Jockey on the Saturday night and it was great to meet an old friend Philip Price (Llanshay)to reminisce on the past.It was the first time that our offsprings had visited Knighton and the thoroughly enjoyed the experience.Kind regards to any of our old friends who may be reading this.

I'm sorry that I obviously upset Steve Abley of Keller, Texas with my remarks about the size of the Abley entries. I must admit that I had missed the May and June emails where Steve makes it clear that he is in fact distantly related to the Knighton Ableys.Nevertheless, I still feel that detailed family discussions of this nature, especially since they refer to families very distant from Knighton, should be by direct contact (I note you offer this), or via a genealogy site such as Curious Fox, rather than on a site such as this one. At no time did I say I was bored since I too am very interested in family history but unfortunately can only trace my roots in the Knighton area back to the early 1800's. The registers are hard to decipher before then and I'd be interested to know where the 1682 date comes from if you obtained it online.

To: Bob Henderson,Geoffrey and Harold Abley are distant cousins of mine. The Abley family have their roots deeply entrenched in Knighton and the surrounding area. Henry Abley born circa 1682 is the first that I have recorded to have lived in Knighton with his family although it is more than likely there were others before him.I am sorry that you find the notes on the Abley's boring, genealogy is not everyones cup of tea.

A story from Station Road , could it be true . Mr Medlicott had a dog ( a big old spaniel as I recall ) . Mr Richardson the butcher went over the road to Medlicotts and asked that if a dog came into his shop and took some meat would the owner be liable ? Given a positive answer to this he said " well your dog took a leg of lamb 30 shillings worth ".Mr M agreed to this but said his fee for legal advice would be 30 shillings !

I am following on from something that Bob Henderson has raised.Firstly Wilf Gough did indeed have milk round in the fourties, fifties. But moving on to Bob's other point Wilf certainly did have a dance band which from the thirties(so I am told) up until the late fifties or even the early sixties could be heard "struttin their stuff" all round Radnorshire Herefordshire and Shropshire and often going further afield into Montgomery Brecon and even Cardigan. In the time which I remember (just after the war)the line up was piano Mrs Olive Kay and then in the very early fifties George Tippins on piano, on drums Harold Morris, double bass Gary Davies,Bertie Pugh on trumpet sometimes Harold Tantrum on tenor sax and the leader himself Wilf Gough on alto sax.As Bob remembers the Scarlet Troubadors used to bring in extra musicians this mostly for very prestigious balls. Just after the war they used to have a female vocalist Phyllis Steel (now Mrs Guest) and it is very sad to report that Phyllis is as far as I know the only member of the band still alive.Bob mentioned my interest in jazz well I am still very very interested but I regret to report that the jazz content of the above band was minimal. But never the less good times was had by many thousands of people at a time of austerity, rationing and great change both socially and of course musically. Because suddenly there was Rock and Roll.

John Jordan's list of Knighton milkmen brought back memories. I seem to recall hearing that wilf Gough had a small delivery round, presumably along Kinsley road.Wilf, as well as being a farmer, was the local bandleader. His band used to play at most of the local dances as "Wilf Gough and his Band". However, on special occasions, when the dance was called a "Ball" and the tickets were more expensive, it was "Wilf Gough and his Scarlet Troubadours" with extra musicians drafted-in to augment the normal line-up.John, who incidentally has always been a jazz enthusiast will be able to fill-in the names, since he was much more into the music scene than I was.

I've just read through these pages for the first time in many months.I was saddened to read that Susan Moore (as was) had passed away - a classmate whom I remember well. My sympathies to her family if they are reading.Keith Owen's observations about Station Road (Hi, Keith! by the way) were interesting. The Misses Beddoes were our neighbours (I think their door no. was 10) from when we moved to No.8 (flat behind and above Gaius Smith's, who were, I think, nos 6 and 8) in 1950 until they moved on or passed away, in the first half of the 1960s, I think. And Gaius Smi! th's went out of business in 1966 or 67. Next to the Misses Beddoes, at no. 12, I suppose, was the Gas Board and John Jordan. The shops opposite were Whittall's, Heywood's newsagents - before they moved up the street to what had been Miss Green's sweetshop - and Owen's Motors, if my memory is right. As you say, Keith, Station Road, in those days, was always busy, with traffic to and from the station , the Radco, Brisbane's garage and petrol pumps, Owen's buses and so on.

To the Editors of the Knighton site.I can't put my hand on my heart and say that I've carefully studied the very long entries from various Ableys. Are they in any way connected with the Knighton Ableys who I knew during and after the war, Geoff and Harold? If not, they are taking up an awful lot of Knighton space. As I've said before, I do enjoy this site.

To Steve Abley, keller, TX.Thank you for your reply to me, those dates you quoted could be correct but I do not have birth certificates. Walter Abley may be my great grandfather, he was born in France, his wife Francis Lewis, the had 11 children 5 of them died. Walter was born in the 1820s or 1830s and went to Australia in the 1850s. Walker toe and heel in the Olympics. I have tried to get your email address from the organizers of this site but couldn't find it. I thank you for your research into the Abley name, it is so important for me as I am in the process of writing a book. The name itself dates back to 9 11 AD and is in the "Domesday book" of 1086 a family name capable of being traced back to this document, or to Hastings, was a mark of honour for most families during the middle ages. In North America, immigrants shared the name Abley. In recent history, notable bearers of the Abley surname include Sir Frederick Abel, a noted English Chemist; George Ogden Abell (1927)-1983, Ph.D., American astronomer best known for his catalogue of clusters of galaxies collected during his work as an observer for the Palomar sky survey, commonly referred to as the "Abell catalogue.";and Kjeld Abell (1901-1961), Danish playwright and theatrical designer. Hope to hear from you soon.

My uncle, John Aubry had a master tailors shop in Wimbourne during the 2d world war, it can now be seen at the model village their. He comes from a long line of tailors going back in English history, one of whom was the master tailor to King Henry the V111. I only met my dads brother the one time and I was quite young,I do remember he was very handsome and quite tall. My uncle Fred and my dad were in the 1st world war, uncle Fred was in the Royal Navy and my dad the Horse Marines. Uncle Fred was the Navy boxing champion and the story goes he met Tommy Farr in London and challenged%2! 0him to a friendly fight, knocking Tommy out in the first round and that was before Tommy met Joe Louis for the heavy weight world championship. Uncle Fred was later killed in a building accident.

Barry Abley and Mark Abley are both authors, Barry lives in Australia and Mark in Canada. My dads brother had a master tailors shop in Wimbourne Dorset during the last war years, who I believe may well be the father of Barry and Mark, but at this time I have no proof of this, so much had been hidden by my own family for reasons unknown to me. I do have information on Walter Abley who was born in the 1820s or 1830s. He travelled to Australia in the 1850s and was a walker heel & toe in Olympics. He was born in Bordeaux France, had 11 children 5 of whom died. He was arrested for bigamy! in Victoria and a young girl was found buried, not sure if he was the father though. Thanks for reading.

My very good friend Bob Henderson posted an item here last week that got me thinking. In passing, Bob mentioned Mr Williams Woodhouse Farm and the fact that he used to have a milk round. In those days(1940;s) when our population was about 1700 I can recall several milk delivery traders. Whittalls Jenkinallis,(who also used to bring our milk to the school,Rollings The Rhoss,Hughes The Mount,Pugh The Grove,Price The Garth,Cadwallader Panteg,Gwilt Halfway House,I also seem to remember that Davies The Brookhouse had a milk round for a while. These are all in addition to the previously mentioned Mr Williams. These peopl! e mostly by pony and trap(milk float) made daily deliveries to our doors and measured you a pint or half into you own jug at your door step. Now with a population of over 3000 we have to go too one of the shops to collect our milk. The exception being the really good service supplied to those of us who value old standards,by CHARLIE WATTS,well done and many thanks Charlie.

I grew up in Knighton from the mid thirties until i moved to Chester in 1947.I attended Knighton Primary school and Presteigne Grammar school. I primarily lived at the five turnings and moved to 46 Market street. My father Percy Tomlin was a painter & decorator and my mother Kate Tomlin had a cafe in Market street, until she worked at Knighton Hospital.I have good memories of the shops at the top of the town.To name a few Hamars,Jack Cuthbertson,Ray Cuthbertson fish & chip shop and the Fleece Inn.In the early 40s I used to deliver groceries for a shop called Allcocks with a good friend of mine who was Wilfred (curly) James who sadly died.My sister Betty still lives in Knighton and we visit regularly.I would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers me and Knighton in the 40s.

If you plan to visit Knighton again please let me know and I will let you have copies of the photos I have and share with you, my memories of my great uncle Wyndham.

I can remember Wyndham Parker playing football for Knighton at the end of the war. A couple of years before he died, Rafe Pugh showed me a team photo of Knighton Town FC and I tink Wyndham was on it. He was medium height, thick set and bald on top. Also, he had a moustache.I can also remember Margaret Brindley's father Fred working at the Woodhouse for Tom Williams, before Dai Bowen took over. Mr Williams, like several other local farmers, had a small milk round in the town. I can't remember Fred delivering the milk, but he almost certainly played a big part feeding and milking the cows.I think Bill Preece started working at Richards' Builders at about the same time as Fred. My father was a carpenter for the firm.

Tet Curry - my late stepfather Reg Owen played for Knighton also in the 1930s/early 40s and I do have a photo of the team taken some time in this era, though apart from Reg I don't know any names. A couple of years ago I returned all his cups (which had been religiously polished for years!) back to Knighton Town FC but don't know what they eventually did with them. Am happy to email a copy of the photo to you if you can find some way of letting me have your email address - don't know if your grandad is on it or not. Unfortunately do not recall your family's names but maybe your mother may remember one of my sisters?

My family come from Knighton, the Parkers and the Kells and ran the Plough Hotel for many years. My grandad George Wyndham Parker played for Knighton Town FC in the 1930s & 40s. My mother, Veronica Parker, lived at the Plough and remembers lots of places in Knighton. Has anyone any photos/memories of my family?

This is my 1st but definitely not my last visit to this webpage. So many people whose name I remember from my childhood/growing up in Knighton are mentioned or written in. It is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours reading and remembering. I grew up on the Ffrydd, where Mum still lives, my Dad 'Fred' worked at the Woodhouse for Dai Bowen then for Richards the Builders. My uncle was Jack Davies the milkman. My brothers were Bernard Ivor & Glyn. Sadly, Bern and Glyn, Dad and Uncle Jack are no longer with us. My sister Sue and Ivor still live in Knighton. So many names on here that I remember. Shiela Reece, we used to call her Mum Aunty Mae. We spent many an afternoon playing with Joey Elaine and Carole, up on the Square. I no longer live in Knighton but I think that part of me always will be there. I moved away 10 years ago and now live in Llanelli with Derek Marriott

Visited Knighton Show yesterday with sister Charmaine, what a fantastic parade and show, the weather was kind and there was a great turnout. We had a nostalgic walk round the town, most of the shop fronts are just as they were when we lived there in the 1940s/50s, just different names. Judith Dyke - Charmaine well remembers your sister Monica Gill and Ruthie Layton (her mother Mrs Layton was a good friend of my mother and one of my godmothers). And Sheila Reece - as soon as I read your name it "rang a bell" but I cannot quite place you - did we go to school together? ! We believe we remember the Bowens down Mill Green. A lovely day.

Re shirley Bessant's enquiry about whether or not we had a pekinese dog. My good friend John Jordan has affirmed that we did. His name was Choo Chee and he was snappy as well as yappy!Shirleys mother was always known as "Little May" to distinguish her from her mother-in-law who was also May Reece. There have been a couple of references to the headmaster being "Walters", his name was Waters. I haven't seen his daughter Ruth and younger son Tudor for over 50 years, they were both at school when I was.Knighton is a smashing town set in wonderful country and will always be "home" to me.

This is primarily some information for Eric Rice, Liverpool, who asked about the Misses Beddoes who had a gown and haberdashery shop at 7 Station Rd. I remember this shop but can’t say the year it closed, but would think about 1965. Mr John Jordan who also posts on this site may know, as at this time he was manager of the gas board showroom next door. I purchased this property in 1967 and lived and ran a shop there, until selling it in 1972, at this time, Station Road was still quite busy as previously stated the gas board was next door at no 8 and a large grocery shop Gauis Smiths, was at no 5 &6 Mr. Will Stephens was Manager from the 1930's through to his retirement in the mid 60's. Mr. Grainger, Mr. Clay and Jean Steadman were all employees . There were also other shops on opposite side of road.

Sally Woodhouse asks about Mr Fred Nash, well I remember him living at the corner of Wylcm Street and Wylcwm place alongside the then offices of the Radnorshire Company she may remember it being opposite Post Office and the Horse and Jockey public house.Sheila Bessant asks about Bob henderson, yes he certainly did have a Pekinese dog(I know that Bob reads this site and will surely add to this)

Does anyone still remember Fred(erick) Nash who worked on the railway (possibly stationmaster) at Knighton for many years, retiring around 1960? His wife was called Ida and they had one son, Kenneth. Fred was my great-uncle and we used to visit them when I was a child at their house in the middle of the town. I can't remember the address but the living room was semi-basement so you could see the feet of passers-by on the pavement - very amusing to a young child! Great memories of a lovely town.

Born Llandrindod Wells 1939 but brought up in Knighton. Went to Knighton Primary School then Presteigne. We lived on the square at the top of the town and when I returned to Knighton after many, many years away I found our home had gone and a church sat proudly in its place. My maternal grandparents (Bowen) lived in Mill Green when I was growing up and that too had disappeared. Thank goodness Norton St is still there, where my other grandmother lived. Looking forward to being in Knighton again this year for the show (really enjoyed last year) and meeting%2! 0up with old friends, especially Sheila and Derek Lancett and Doreen Phillips. Also my cousin Allan Jones (Pontfaen) and his sister, Maureen, who will be coming up from London. Their dad, Bill, died last year. He lived in Kinsley House and is still very much missed.I have been reading this site for a couple of years and have seen lots of names I remember, such as the Bevan brothers, Cynthia Cartwright, Jim & John Clay. etc.I think Bob Henderson's mother was a friend of my mother. The big question is did she have a yappy little pekinese ???I had better mention Tanner, as so many have done before me !I confess I sometimes think it would nice to return to Knighton but I know I would miss M&S far too much .

I am related to the Steadman Family from Knighton, I loved travelling down as a child to see Aunties and Cousins. It is a beautiful village/town with some very happy memories for me. I remember my Auntie living in Norton Street. I was last in Knighton about 3 years ago, and very little looked to have changed from me being a child of the 70's. I must make an effort to get back there to have a look around again.

My sister, Edna, and brother, Arthur, were both evacuated to Knighton from 1940 to 1943. Edna has recently visited the town and thoroughly enjoyed it, walking round the places where she played and went to school. They lived at 7 Station Rd. and she says that the house is still there but un-occupied with no "sale or to let" notice. The ground floor of the premises was a gown and habberdashery shop with a small fitting room upstairs. It was owned (or rented) by two spinster sisters, the Misses Beddowes; does anyone know anything of the two sisters and what happened to them and the shop after t! he war ended?

Many, many thanks to John Jordan for taking the time and effort to answer my question Re: my dad's father. It was very emotional to be given some information about the man... I can't tell you how much this means to both myself and my family - to actually know something about him after all these years. It is heartbreaking that my Dad died not knowing who his father was...thanks to you I am a step closer to bringing this to closure for him. Please would you pass on my thanks to the Neary family for providing the info. It is great to know that I have relatives in Knighton and hopefully one day%! 20I will get to meet up with them. Could I please trouble you by asking two more questions? Do they have a name or know anything at all about him? (ie. where he was stationed, whether he was killed in action). Also, could I have the name of his Gran? I would like to pay her my respects when I visit Knighton in August(I know she was buried in Knighton but without a first name I have been unable to search any Church records - or find a headstone in any of the churchyards during my most recent visit... you've been absolutely fantastic!

My brother, Chris, and I grew up in the Cwm before moving to Kinsley Terrace in 1954. Miss Taylor the Primary School teacher lived a few doors away. I have many very fond memories of Christine Cadwallader & her sister Jackie and Dad Ralph. I notice Christine lives in Malvern, well my oldest son lives in Malvern Link so I'll be looking out for her when I next visit him. John Jordan was a stalwart at the RAFA club where my Dad used to play darts & dominoes. I have many happy memories of Knighton and it was a great place to grow up, being able to play safely on Bryny,in Kinsley Wood or up The Ffrydd. It's great to see so many names that I recognise on this website and it brings back so many happy memories. Keep writing folks!.

Cynthia Bettaney (nee Cartwright), North Shropshir
Thanks Bryan for putting me onto this site - has revived many memories of a happy childhood spent in Knighton in the 1940s/early '50s. Christine Saunders sums up my memories exactly, even though I am probably somewhat older than her. I am the youngest of the four Cartwright girls and was born at Mill Green, next door to Mrs Harding, before we all moved to "The Bungalows". My sisters are Charmaine, Hazel and Valerie - Hazel and Valerie both live now in USA, Charmaine lives close to me in Shropshire. My best friends at school were Libby Preece (so glad I got t! o meet her again a year before her untimely death), Doreen Marshall and Georgie Cartwright (no relation), both sadly now deceased. Spent many happy hours wheeling dolls prams up to the stile, sledging in winter down the brilliant hill with the bump in the middle, and playing in the woods - we would just go home when we were hungry!! A lot of correspondents probably remember my sisters better - I know Hazel knew the Bevan brothers, and some names rang a bell with Charmaine. We left Knighton in 1953 and I revisit every so often. Anyone remember any of us?

My late father Patrick Neary was born in Knighton in 1944 to Winifred Neary. He spent his childhood there living with his Gran until he was forced to move to the Midlands following her death around 1952. Although he left Knighton, his heart was always there and returned to show us around several times. Unfortunately he died 10 years ago and was never told who his father was. Can anybody remember him? He attended Knighton school and used to play on the Garth. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

I also saw that Susan Brown is querying Treburvaugh near Knighton. She is right in some respects that Treburvaugh was possibly a Bed and Breakfast venue but I suspect this is the Treburvaugh that stands near Offa's Dyke National Trail probably about 10 miles or so to the South of Knighton.Closer to Knighton is a Treburvauh Farm, at Monoughty (derived from MynachDu - the Monk's or Monks' Dwelling) and lies about 3 miles out from Knighton on the Llandrindod Wells road. The present family are Pugh.

I grew up in Knighton in the 1950s. Went to Knighton Primary, I remember Miss Taylor, who was my first teacher, Miss Watkins, Miss Cadwallader and Mr Waters, the annual school concert in the church hall, sports days on Bryny, the excitement of the May Fair arriving past our school windows... good days! We enjoyed wonderful freedom as children with fields to roam and streams to play in. A great place to grow up in.

I am the middle one of the Three Bevan Boys - Roger, Philip and Richard (Dick) who lived in Wesley House, West Street, from 1945 to 1957. I was a member of the St Edwards Church Choir, played in the Silver Band when Tommy Thomas was the conductor, also was a player with Knighton Town Football Club. What a great time it was. During the weekend of June 12th-14th all three of us with members of our family are staying in and around Knighton to show the youngsters what a good place it is.

I was originally from Knighton. I was born up Cwm garden in the early 50's and lived down Fronhir in the 60's before emigrating to Australia in 69. Oops! Sorry I didn't recognise you at the do at the Knighton Hotel, John. Still, it's nice to speak to you now over the interweb. You may not know, but us younger blokes thought you and my brother John were the best jivers in town - and we were right :-). Jonathan H, you remember me too well! The church choir bit didn't happen (I wasn't in the choir - rubbish voice) but I do remember reading the news on the paper round and probably telling people when I got to school or on the school bus... I'm still a fan of many types of music - the roots and shoots of rock 'n'%2! 0roll.

John Jordan asked if anyone else remembered him. Yep! My paper round in the 50s (Heywood's paper shop)included Norton Street - I have this memory of delivering the 'Melody Maker' to J. Jordan. Didn't you also work at the Gas Board showroom in Station Road in the 50s? I lived above Gaius Smith's in Station Road (where Dad worked) from 1950-1961, when I left home to work, but I've been going back as often as I can ever since. I remember well several of the people who've posted here, or have been mentioned here - the Bowdler brothers from Kinsley Terrace, the Oldbury broth! ers from the paper shop, Broad Street, Malcolm Bryan, Brian Chick, Bob Jones, son of Phil Jones, butcher, 'Pop' Waters and Miss Cadwallader, and many more.A great town to grow up in (my sister's kids all grew up there), to settle in (Mum and Dad, bless 'em, never thought of moving again after moving there in 1950) and to visit.

I went to the local primary school in Knighton about 1955 when Miss Cadwallader and Mr Waters were the head-teachers. I remember school friends like Graham Roberts, Christopher Bowdler, Robert Jones (the butcher's son), Margaret Trillo and Trevor Evans. We lived in Treburvaugh House near Monaughty. I also joined the first Knighton Scout Group (Sid ? was my patrol leader) and still have a photo of all the scouts. Pleasant childhood memories.

I grew up in Knighton. Went to Knighton Primary. Miss Cadwallader was the head Mistress and Pop Waters was the head master and also the church choir master where Jonathan (brother) and I were in the choir. We got paid 5 shillings per quarter year. Then went to Presteigne Grammar. Myself, Ray Price and John Felton used to poach all the fish from the local streams (as you did in those days). Lovely fresh trout. Knighton was a great place to be when you were a lad!! Do you remember Bill Brown's dances. The lights used to make your white cloth! es glow. I was in the scouts and we saw what the chief scout wore under his kilt at the scouts Jamboree at Llandrindod Wells (when he tried out our swinging derik). A number of us used to be in the ATC and attend the meetings in the RAFA club (upstairs). I used to play football for Knighton juniors but got tranferred to Bucknell juniors for a 50p tranfer fee (I can't imagine why). We didn't win many games. But it was all good fun. Those were the days

I am researching the town where my grandmother grew up, she was born in 1910 to Thomas and Elizabeth Lloyd. I dont have much info other than Thomas Lloyd b.1881 lived in Knighton in 1901 on Victoria Road, he was a post office clerk later to become postmaster, he also had something to do with the church. Not sure when he died but was still alive in mid/late 1940s. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Ray Jones was a neighbour of ours in Knighton as he lived on the upper Cwm road and yes he did have a son Clive. In answer to Peter from Leicester, I remember my mum and grandmother talking about the Nash family. In particular Janet Nash who would have been about my mother's age. Mum died in January 2005 and I think I may well have phoned Janet Nash to let her know. She definitely is a name that I know.I also remember the Abley family.

My best friend from school, Ray Jones, lived (still lives ?) in Knighton, the last I heard of him, which was in our late 20's. We were both 70 in October, 2008. He was originally from Beaufort in Ebbw Vale, south Wales, and joined the RAF but was invalided out because of migraines and went to live in Knighton. I tried directory enquiries last week and was given the number of an R. Jones but when I rang, it wasn't Ray. Can anyone help ?.

I can remember Mervyn Jones' family living in Church Street. His mother, (a sister to Bernard Edwards' mother), worked part-time at Machins the Chandos with my mother. Mervyn's sister, Ruth, had her own hairdressing business. She married Dick James, Wylcwm Cafe.Mervyn worked at Pugh's Ironmongers, near the clock tower. I didn't know his wife, but my brother-in law tells me she was Violet Davies of Slab Hall, Lloyney.

Sandra Evans of Oswestry asks for information on her Abley ancestors/relations. I can clearly remember two Abley brothers, Harold and Geoff, living and trading in Broad Street. They also had a warehouse for second-hand furniture in Church Street. I can't remember their brother Bill and think the Bill Abley remembered by Brian Thomas was in fact Geoff. They lived with their widowed mother and probably at least one of their sisters was there too. Certainly during the war, the sister who was married to "Skip" Prosser, who was Knighton scoutmaster, was living in the famil! y home.I have talked to one or two of my old Knighton acquaintances and their recollections are the same as mine. When I knew them Harold and Geoff were bachelors, but rather late in life, both got married.Geoff used to use a funeral bier to transport furniture and other items bought at local sales to the warehouse. There are numerous entries for the Knighton, Abley family on the Ancestry website and if Sandra Evans wishes to contact me I'd be glad to send her details of these.

I knew both a Harold and a Bill Abley, they looked very much alike. My Grandfather was Oldbury who had the papershop next door but one, and my mother knew Ableys well. I still have two chairs hand made by them which were given to my mother for a wedding present in 1935.

In reply to Sandra Evans; My Mother had a hairdressing salon in Broad Street next but one to your Great Grandfather's premises, with Doris Jones' sweet shop in between - I have very hazy memories from my early childhood of going into Mr Abley's shop, this would have been in the early sixties.I still have a house in Knighton, in which there is a large hinged oak screen and an intricately carved oak log-box - both of which were made by your Great Grandfather.P.S. Hello to Colin Relf, drummer extraordinaire! :)

Hi. My father's family were born and lived for three generations in and around Knighton before his family moved from Norton Street to Swansea Bay early in the 20thc.I was brought up on stories of this fine old Border town and came to love it when I finally got to visit it in the eighties and nineties and explored the Narrows, the Cwm,etc. and talked to the friendly townspeople.I have researched the family histories of both the Joneses and the Stedmans of Knighton for many years now and was interested to see Clive Stedman's entry - we met in Knighton for a couple of hours all those years back.If you are interested Clive, a get-together of Stedmans of your family lineage will be at Bucknell village on Saturday morning 2nd August 2008. Why not pop along for an hour and meet us, some have come from Australia to join us.

I lived in west street, knighton for 8 years and just moved to marston green birmingham, I loved the town and countryside its beautiful, some of the people are very friendly, my family lived in knighton and knucklas all their lives and were very happy living there, I would recommend any body pay a visit to knighton. One thing that could change though is the shops opening and not just when they feel like it as visitors wont come back if shops and cafes are closed.

Re Barrueto Verena's entry. The Knightonian you met walking in Switzerland is, almost certainly, Raymond Jones who was a postman in the town for many years. Ray's wife is Swiss. I'm not sure of his full address but if you send a card to him addressed "Ray Jones, Retired Postman, The Cwm, Knighton, Powys, UK." I'm sure it will reach him. I'm still seeking Roger Bevan's whereabouts, are you there Phil or Richard?.

Two days ago I met Mr "Raymon "........, aged 83,and his wife on a hike in the french part of Switzerland. He was a postoffice man, living in Knighton. He said, everybody knows him at home. He must have been a keen mountainclimber, because he told me he once met Ed.Hillary and Sherpa Tensing and Coronel Hunt, who was from the area.Who could give me his address in order to send him a postcard? Thanks in advance.

Knighton is a great town with great people, although I've lived away for 10 years now it is still very much 'Home' and I get back as often as possible. Am looking forward to Carnival 2008 - it will be the first time my kids are of the age to really appreciate the fun day it always is - does anybody know if they still have themes - if so, what is it for this year? I was so pleased to find this sight. I was born and brought up in Knighton, and still think of it as home - although it gets a little less so each year.
In response to a previous message, I remember a picture at my mother's cousin's house of a nurse called Megan...She died young? Memeories of a small child.
However, I do remember Phil Jones, the butcher, a great friend of my grandad Crunch Preece, and am still in touch with his son, Brian. I also remember Alf Wright, Abo Davies and so many more.

I moved to Knighton 9 years ago this summer with my mum, brothers and grandparents and can honestly say that we were all made to feel welcome and quickly settled into the local community. Having moved from oxfordshire, knighton was a bit of a culture shock, but soon I settled into the country way of life. I was able to go out with my friends and not have mum worrying at home, and in time everyone knows your name. The people of knighton all look out for each other, and the community spirt you will not find in any other place.
I love knighton and the people in and around the area and I'm proud to call it my home. I have now bought my own house here and I hope that one day that my children will do the same!
If i was to change anything about knighton it would be the public transport, unfortunatly for the locals buses are very few and far between, and a good run to and from hereford twice a day would help the young and old, who either cant drive, or cant afford the expense of a car!But still, I love knighton!

I was born and raised in Knighton and loved it - the best place to grow up - you could go out all day long and no one had to worry about you. I moved away aged 19 to be an au-pair and haven't stopped travelling since - now I would give anything to be back there with my family and friends. It's a place you can always call home, where everyone remembers you and every time I'm home people always stop to chat and say hello - not like in big cities where you are ignored!! Many a great meal had at the Horse and Jockey:) Where I live now you need a car to go into town - not like just walking up to Broad Street!!

Clive Dalton, who, like me , left the town about 50 years ago alerted me to this site.Although it's many years since I lived there, Knighton is still "home" as far as I'm concerned. I have so many memories of the town and its people. Crime was almost completely absent. The main offences dealt with "up the steps" in the Magistrates' Court were, riding a bike without lights, being drunk and committing a nuisance, (peeing on the street) and being "in pursuit of conies", (poaching rabbits). Our main entertainments were, standing for hours talking on Harris's Corner, and going to the pictures in what became the Norton Arms ballroom before the Brown family built a new cinema at the bottom of Larkey Lane, (we used to call it Frydd Lane). In about the late 1940's Bill Yeomans, who owned the Norton Arms, opened a snack bar next to Wooding's Garage shop. Margaret Davies, Brookside, served behind the counter.I could write so much more. Warmest greetings to Bethan Oldbury, Phil Bevan (where's Roger now?), Brian Thomas and all my old firends from those happy days.

I was born and grew up in Knighton. My parents had the newsagency in Broad St. by the clock tower. I agree with Richard Bevan about the dinners in Primary School - they were great. However, I have always hated the song "Greensleeves" because we had to sing it so often with Mrs. Polkinghorne (I think). Went to Presteigne Grammar then joined Midland Bank. Married in 1959 and came to Australia in 1967. Have visited Knighton often over the years but Mum died in 2005 so it won't be as often now. Brothers Peter and Roger both live in the Birmingham area. Cousin Brian in Leeds contributes to this web site! I was interested to hear about the night life in Knighton. Tell me more!

I was born and raised in Birmingham and moved to Knighton in April 2006, the best move I ever made. Whilst I am proud to be English, the people of Knighton are justly proud to be Welsh. Knighton is a wonderful community, the people are justifiably proud of their town and heritage. I would recommend anyone visiting this town just to see the way in which communities can live together, irrespective of where you are born. It is with pride that I say that those people that I have met since moving here, I now class as my friends and if there are any better pubs in the country, then I have yet to find them. Thanks Gary, Jacqui, Helen and Justin, not forgetting Ieuan.

I have many happy memories of Knighton. Our family moved there from North Wales in 1946.One of the first things I can remember was walking up Norton Street to the Primary School canteen where we had really good school dinners.Another memory was when Charlie Jones and Arthur Mann came from Shrewsbury to revitalise the town's soccer team.In 1958 in my last season in junior footballwe won three trophies and had a celebration evening at the RAFA club up the narrows.Amoungst my many school friends and team mates were Philip Price(Llanshay), Tanner Davies and Bryan Gough.I and my two brothers were friends of Brian Thom! as and recall that his mother helped to prepare the Cricket teas at Bryn-y-Castell.Another memory is when I went to Knighton show a few years ago and meeting Ioan Davies an old work colleague in his Beguialdy Bus.Although I very rarely visit the town now I shall never forget my stay there in the forties and fifties.

I was interested in David Evans comments re a photographer in Knighton (1906 - 1935)because my Great Great Grandfather, William Henry Lloyd, was the first photographer in the town in the 1850's. His son, Charles, carried on the business (on Broad Street) from the 1870's until the early 1900's. David's subject would appear to have taken on the business after Charles.

I too love Knighton. I have many happy memories from my childhood visits in the 1940's and 50's to my Great Grandmother (Sarah Lloyd)who died in her 98th year in 1954. She lived at 6 Ffrydd Road. I used to go across the road to play with Shirley Cartwright whose father manufactured 'pop'.I can remember going out with him when he made deliveries. My Great Aunt, Margaret Lloyd, continued to live in the cottage until her death in 1981.The residents of Knighton have always been very friendly and I always regret the moment when I have to say goodbye to the town. I am writing on behalf of my mum above who will be 80 this year, who was born in 37 market St Knighton. I and my sisters personally spent many holidays in Knighton from 1973 onwards which were idyllic. She since moved south and would love to here from anyone that knew her, we also used to stay in the Coombe in 1970.

I have lived in Knighton for over 75 years and would not move to any other location.Knighton is a quiet town,it has a relaxing atmospher.I would still like to see more work brought back into the town as it has lost many hundred's of job's in the past 20 years.I have served the town on many committee's for 60 years including Mayor 3 times and will continue to serve as long as possible.Knighton is a town which grows on people as can be seen by the number who visit and stay.

(now Lesley Pendlebury) grew up in Knighton born 1943 - left after the war but spent all holidays in Knighton where my sister and I still have the house where we were born (Kinsley Terrace). All memories are wonderful - playing in the woods, skimming stones in the Teme - loving people everywhere then - and now. Most of my family are now in the cemetery - but, is there a more beautiful place in which to rest? Anyone who remembers me or my sister, Christine or the Taylors/Hughes family please get in touch. Otherwise, be glad and happy that you know one of the most lovely places in this world.

Knighton was a great place to grow up in. I lived in Wesley House with mum Vee and dad Ken and brothers Roger & Richard(Dick) from August 1945 to September 1958. As kids we were able to explore the wild countryside walking miles in all directions from west street,"up the river" "Up Panny" "through Kingsley Wood What A great childhood. If the weather was against us we would play cricket in one of the large attics in Wesley House "Tanner" Davies would remember that! With he Town Band under Tommy Thomas I enjoyed playing the cornet (3 practices a week in the "barn" near the Vicarage. Also enjoyed playing in the Junior and senior soccer teams over anumber of years. Have managed to get back for short visits in recent years and still enjoy the town but don't see many people that I knew all those years ago! Its a great place.

Lived in Knighton from August 1945 to September 1958. Went to Presteigne Grammar School with Geoff Hall and David Parry who I incidently bumped into when I last visited Knighton in 2006, he was visiting from Plymouth. Member of Church Choir, Brass Band and played for Knighton Town Soccer Team. "Pop" Waters Head of the Primary School instilled in me a love of nature and I am still very much involved with natural history organisations particulary with ornithology. Remember walks up the river and "Panny". But now enjoy walks along the Solent Beaches and in the New Forest.

Moved to Knighton when I was four and finally moved away when I was twenty four. Having spent my childhood, teenage years and early twenties there I can honestly say there is no better place to grow up. In its rural location Knighton is the ideal place for children, all the countryside they can want and it's rural location makes it a safe area for kids too. I have too many fond memories of growing up to list here but a big hello to Jon, Fuzzy, The Twins (Anz Boy & Timmy), Gavin, Darren, Paul and anyone else I may have forgot. I return to Knighton regulary throughout the year to visit my folks and enjoy seeing the old town everytime. Yes it's a quiet place with not much going on nowadays but it'll always be a special place for me.

Hello Clive. You do not give any indication of when you resided in Knighton. As you lived on the Cwm, do you remember the Price family. My memories of the silver band were when they played in the field behind the heritage centre, A field we called Dingly Dell what its true name was I will never know. Like yourself, I enjoy going back to Knighton time and time again. A place I could quite happily live.

I grew up in Knighton, first living in a cottage along the Cwm,later on Frydd Terrace. Our family moved to Telford (Wellington before Telford)during the late nineteen fifties. My grandmother, Annie Powles lived in Knighton all her life, and I belive she was the oldest resident, she died in her 103rd year. She was also a keen Baptist.I was a pupil at the old primary school, next to the new herritage. My wife,Barbara and I visit the town as often as possible, attend as many of the silver band concerts (of which I was a member when Tommy Thomas was the conductor)as we can.Knighton remains a lovely border town, not particularly spoiled by progress as other towns are during development. We welcome the slower pace of life when we visit.

Just came across your webpage & think it's great! Like many who have come to this site, I'm an American whose last name is "Knighton", so this town is of interest to me. Do you have any pubs or clubs that have the "Knighton" logo on a t-shirt? I would love to purchase one if so. Well, I don't know much about your part of the world but am enjoying reading about your area. Thank you for your webpage and for your patience with all of our American questions & comments.

My grandfather (Ivor Thomas Evans 1908-1968) grew up in the Knighton area and left in 1926 to find work in the north of England. I visited the town in the mid-1990s with my father as we sought out his old home. I thought it was a lovely town with friendly welcoming people.

I was evacuated to Knighton during the last war. I had and probably still have relations in the town. We stayed with Tom and Annie Turner, at the Winevaults, 1 Russell St. I still visit the town, at least once a year, whenever possible bringing the grandchildren with me to share my memories. Walks by the Teme, stopping now and again to play ducks and drakes. The clock tower, the old school. Memories of Knighton silver band playing in the field behind the Offas Dyke centre. The surrounding countryside, where, as a young boy I spent many happy hours, free from the terrors of conflict. In 1984 I joined the YHA and visited Knighton Hostel. Surprisingly the room in which I slept, was the same in which I waqs taught in the 1940's. I have been to the town this year and will be there again on the 12th November, when I hope to attend the remembrance day commemoration and remember my great uncle William John Turner, who died in Gallipoli in 1915. Yes! I love Knighton and will continue to visit as long as I am able.

Yes it is a beautiful place. Its border town character and charm may it always remain. Although I certainly don't miss the place, I found a decent job as soon as I moved up here, I have more to do, cinema, nightlife and pro football to watch. I have visited Knighton twice in 10 months since I left, not a lot changes. I don't ever intend on moving back there.

Her name was Nelly,Ivy Jordan. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

It's my home town, I moved to Essex some 15 years ago. My parents still live there but I visit only once or twice a year, not enough. It's the of the most beautiful towns in Mid Wales. I played for the local Rugby club for many years and when I return your treated like you never left, fantastic people and very friendly. Visit Knighton , you will go back each year.

I lived and worked in Knighton in the late 70s early 80s and the people are some of the nicest you will ever meet. I used to work at the old tyre factory and met many great friends! My sister still lives there (Sadie Ellis). Knighton has a special place in my heart.

I have been visiting Llangunllo, a close village to Knighton every year for the past 29 yrs, and I think the area is absolutely wonderful. My partner and I have just spent a week at Criegnant Farm in Llangunllo helping Les Poole with his lambing, which we enjoyed immensely.

I'm glad I moved here 15 years ago and fortunate enough to deliver all 4 of my children in Knighton's maternity unit. The primary school has a friendly close knit community, as does the town. The countryside around Mid-Wales is cetainly breath-taking.

I am originally from Glasbury-on-Wye. My sister Megan Jones was a District Nurse in Knighton back in the 1960's. Unfortunately she died at the early age of 31 on JAnuary 31st 1970. She lived on Ffrydd Terrace. I visited her there once or twice and found the town to be a smashing little place. I have a nephew living there now too, he is a woodworker. I am enjoying looking at the site. Cymru am Byth.

A lovely friendly town, typical of a town on the border. People have an easy going attitude. There isn't a lot of investment in the town, a problem which should be addressed as young families as moving away.
