Without doubt the best evening I have enjoyed with my girlfriend was the Felin Fach Griffin Inn past Brecon and near Builth Wells. Mouth-watering meals and great atmosphere. What a find!

He who knows beer.
You will not be able to find a better pub for many miles around than the Angel Hotel, High Street Llanidloes. There are always three real ales, all in perfect condition. The landlord, Paul Lloyd, is a jolly good chap and the locals are friendly, especially the handsome white haired gentleman. Why not pay a visit (closed at lunchtime on Wednesday)
Tue Jul 14 10:15:58 2009

Steph
The Griffin Inn, Llyswen does wonderful food. I had a three course meal about a week ago and it was faultless (and I'm picky). The new(ish) owners and staff are really friendly and know how to run an inn of distinction. Well worth a try.

This is a very cosy village pub with coal fire and a friendly reception from local people. The food is really fab and the menu is huge. Lovely.
Wed Oct 1 09:30:14 2008

Julian, Barfield EX Talgarth
I see the comments from Terry White, and I must admit, that I too shared crocodile tears when I left the New Inn, the 'Banjos' are just not that strong! Some very nice people in Talgarth, some not so! I miss our regulars that made our experience in Talgarth palatable.I suppose that my wife and I had expectations of normality, not a culture born from a small village, with that said we bared bad language, fighting and general antisocial behaviour! It’s a shame that more people didn’t appreciate.A special message to you Terry, have fun, enjoy and be as you are Talgarth.
Thu Aug 14 09:26:50 2008

Ray Austin, Gtr Manchester.
For me, for the beer at the tal y don barmouth! their mild was beautiful, quite yes? but great family holiday memories!
Thu Jul 17 09:30:29 2008

John Thomas from Crickhowell
The Crickhowell Conservative club does really smashing breakfasts and other snacks. There is a games room and you canpay a pound for temporary membership. The members and staff are a very friendly lot and the drinks are very reasonable. A good atmosphere.

Daz Aberporth
The Mwlan in aberporth is class!
Mon Feb 4 08:07:57 2008

Terry White, Talgarth
Alas, yet another pub has closed in Talgarth. The New Inn closed in December leaving us with just 3 public houses. The rumour has it that it will be re-opening as a Thai restaurant. I'm sure that with the departure of Julian a lot of people will be shedding a few crocodile tears.
Thu Jan 10 14:46:12 2008

Emily Maggs, Builth Wells
I think that the best pub to go to in Builth Wells is the Lamb Bar. It serves up great drinks at resonable prices and it has got even better since it has been under new management. You have got a fairly good sized beer garden out back and they have got a pool table, a gambling machine with a range of good games and a new updated music system which you can choose what music you want.
Mon Oct 8 11:30:23 2007

Colin Relf, Perth, Western Australia
The Golden Lion in Knighton has one ofthe best atmospheres around, and a great pint too!.Alison & Gary ( mine hosts)have really got this place buzzing! A must for all visitors to beautiful Knighton.
Mon Oct 8 08:14:39 2007

Rob Evans
Red Lion, Llanidloes, stayed there on 3 occasions, breakfasts out of this world, Sunday carvery magic, quality home cooked fresh food. Geoff and Eileen are very welcoming hosts. Comfortable lounge with a number of leather settees, bar has large screen tv's with sky for the visitor or locals. Visit the Clywedog Dam, 3 miles out of Llanidloes, breathtaking views ... check it out you won't be disapointed.
Thu Aug 16 09:38:17 2007

Chris in The Diff
The Dukes Arms is a great establishment which I frequent whenever I visit Presteigne (Powys). It has two real ales on tap, a large selection of lagers and ciders and a dazzling array of crisps and nuts. The owners are friendly (as long as you don't interrupt the afternoon racing), as are most of the clientel (some of them too much so!). All in all a great place to be.
Tue May 22 08:09:50 2007

Ian from Swansea
The Miners Arms at pontrhydygroes has excellent home cooked food, friendly atmosphere. Fantastic (Locally sourced) Steak and the Curry is a must, with house blended spices. With Internet Access!

Bryan from Rhaeadr
The Castle in Rhaeadr. Come and Join the Wednesday and Friday Club, 1.30 onwards. Local characters discussing everything from the weather, farming, politics - all with good humour. The Castle steak sizzlers are in a class of their own.
Thu Jan 11 09:42:16 2007

Mr and Mrs Caldwell, Latchford Warrington
Triangle Inn,nr Rhayader. Great beer, great food. Really warm friendly landlord, landlady and locals. Their warmth is matched by that of their excellent very hot stove.

The greatest pub in mid wales has to be The Buck Hotel in Caersws.
Mon Dec 11 09:16:06 2006

Jamie Wheeler and Fearnley Evison
We think that the best pub in Rhayader is the Triangle Inn in Cwmdauddwr. And another good pub in the area is The Vulcan Inn near Llanwrthwl.
Thu Dec 7 10:24:22 2006

clair powell, gwenddwr
The Wheelwrights Arms in Erwood (near Builth Wells, on A470) has the best food ever. Make sure you go with a very empty belly cos the portions are huge! and very scrumptious! We love it.

Has to be the Farmers bar in the Elan Valley Hotel. The locals are very friendly and don't look like they want to eat you. Good cask beers and Dunkertons Bottled Cider... mmm..... Food is excellent in the restaurant and bar. The Welsh Black steaks there are superb.
Fri Sep 29 12:47:10 2006

Red Lion
Just to imform you all that the Red Lion in Llanafan Fawr has re-opened and is under new management. The food is fantastic and the beer is great. Try it out for yourself.
Fri Feb 24 14:36:39 2006

Andrew Williams Presteigne
The farmers is the best pub in town (Presteigne). Run by crowie and tim its the place to be if you want a pitch of darts, a game of pool or just a swift pint. Famous faces that have visited in the past few years include Eric Bristow and Bobby George (two dart legends). If you are ever in Presteigne be sure to pop in for a pint, and you can get me one in while you are at it!
Tue Jan 31 12:56:30 2006

Barry Evans, Rhayader
The Castle and Carvery in Rhayader because the food in there is amazing and there is a wonderful atmosphere.
Mon Dec 12 12:46:41 2005

John from Ludlow
If it's REAL ale and REAL ambience you're looking for - You should try the Radnorshire Arms, High Street, Presteigne. This Jacobean Inn has been welcoming guests for 4 centuries -It's warm welcome, good food, and excellent guest ales ( members of the Good Pub Guide for the last 8 years). It's a must when visiting the delightful town of Presteigne
Mon Nov 21 20:36:26 2005

Elly, Presteigne
The dukes arms is the place to be!
Sun Oct 23 18:28:47 2005

Michelle, Llangedwyn
The New Inn at Llangonog is perfect. The food is wonderful and inexpensive, the range and quality of the beer, wines and spirits is outstanding and the company great. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, and can not wait until my partner and I visit again. Well done Di and all his staff.
Thu Aug 18 22:50:24 2005

Ellie, Borth
Borth pubs are cleary the best, within walking distance from every house in Borth. If anyone was to come to Borth and wanted to know which one to go to then I would probably say The Vic (The Victoria Inn). This is the neatest and if you stay for long enough and get drunk enough then there's always a karaoke machine for you!
Sun Jul 24 18:27:07 2005

David from Cornwall
The Black Lion Hotel in Pontrhydfendigaid is a hidden gem. If you want to experience a traditional pub with all the trimmings this one's for you. The bar has oak beams, wooden floor and a large open fire. There is no telly (hooray!), games machines, jukebox or pool table - a real treat for those who want to relax in a friendly environment. What they do have is traditional music on most weekends - this place is more like a west coast of Ireland pub than a west Wales pub. The range of beers, including three real ales, is excellent as well as the best selection of whiskey I've seen in a long time. The food is all local and homecooked. This pub is a real gem. I advise you get there soon before it is "discovered".
Mon May 16 12:19:20 2005

Tasha Breeze from Caersws
The Black Boy in Caersws is a traditional family pub. It is one of the oldest in the town and I can gaurantee that there will always be a good atmosphere there. The thing that I love the most about the pub is its carvery on a Sunday - it is the best in the area, next to The Red Lion, Caersws!
Mon Apr 18 10:11:08 2005

Crystal Powell
The Crown Inn Rhayader is a great pub with a good atmosphere.
Thu Apr 7 11:45:17 2005

Charlie Darwin from Llanfair Caereinion
The Black Lion in Llanfair is the most friendly down to earth place around powys to drink at. Highly recommended!
Tue Apr 5 12:57:16 2005

The Crown in Llywndafydd near Llangrannog excellent food and pint, the surroundings are beautiful and a few miles from some excellent beaches eg. New Quay, Llangrannog
Tue Feb 8 18:01:49 2005

Annette Collins, Essex
The Black Lion in New Quay is great for families, with really great home cooked food (especially the desserts). Highchairs are available although the only drawback for people with young children is the lack of baby changing facilites (the ladies loo floor is all that is available). Great outdoor play area for the kids.
Sun Jan 23 12:15:45 2005

John from Birmingham
The Rhydspence Inn near Hay on Wye, on the main Hereford / Leoominster to Brecon road (A438). Whenever I drive to Wales I always stop here for a meal and where possible the night as well. The ambience of the 14th Century building and the log fire in the bar make it a wonderful place to warm up on cold days. The choice of food, real ale and fine wine is excellent and I would definitely recommend this to anyone passing through. There are a choice of small original bars overlooking the Wye Valley and views are amazing. A must visit place....
Thu Dec 23 10:23:28 2004

Mike Jones, Newport
Shoemaker's Arms Pentrebach - a revitalised local pub, now doing food - and a quiet secluded spot, about 4 miles from Sennybridge, Powys
Sat Dec 4 11:08:59 2004

The Farmers Arms in Resolven was the best for both food and atmostphere when I grew up there and according to my Mum, who frequently visits with her friends ( the Golden girls !!!! )for the food ....it's only gotten better. Oh how I wish I was home.

The Ship Inn in Llangrannog. Have a nice brisk walk to the pub on a friday night and listen to one of the featured bands they have every week. They also do the best jacket potato, beans and cheese there ;)
    Sun Aug 8 16:15:34 2004

    Paul from Borth
The Three Horseshoes in Llangeitho. In a changing world (especially pubs), it is still a typical Welsh country pub, serving wonderful food - try the mixed grill, but only if you're starving, or you'll never finish it! If you want to walk it off afterwards, take a stroll down the road and see the nicest bus shelter you'll ever find!
    Thu Jul 29 11:33:25 2004

    Karen Sexton from Harlow
The Black Lion, Derwenlas nr Machynlleth. Lovely food especially the Minted Welsh Lamb Chops. They are delicious. Only a small pub (approx 12 tables) and a roaring fire in the colder weather. Booking essential. Added to that, the staff are very friendly and make you very welcome. The best pub by far in the area. We never miss a couple of visits every time we are in Wales.
    Sat May 22 14:39:38 2004

    Joe Busby from Aberystwyth
Once you leave the confines of that huge urban sprawl in the south, the land gets hilly and the people get nicer: the nicest pub in mid wales has to be Rummers wine bar in aber. Great live music from aber jazz, friendly staff, and the aber regulars are the nicest people in the world. Good beer too.
    Sun Mar 14 19:56:27 2004

    Richard Meredith, Palm Beach, Florida
The Red lion at Llanafan fawr near Newbridge-on-Wye where I grew up. The best food in the area bar none! Adrian and Lorna who run the place are some of the best hosts I have ever seen. The locals are a great bunch of folks and you'll always get a good welcome no matter where you are from or (as in my case) where you've been hiding! An excellent pub steeped in medieval history! Absolutely fantastic!

The Triangle Inn, Cwmdauddwr, near Rhayader: The meals are great, especially Sunday Lunch. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for their customers. A happy atmosphere and a great place to call into after a good walk in the Elan Valley
    Fri Jan 30 13:21:09 2004

    Kelvin Jones from New York
The Star Inn in Talybont on Usk is a big favourite with the local cycling clubs from the area. Adrian, the owner, regales you with his legendary prowess with his pool cue (I still beat him). The blackboard full of real ales is not to be missed, as are the pork and stuffing sandwiches. I'm drooling at the memory of cycling 13 miles of wonderful cycling trail and then a pint of Old Peculiar while dipping the sandwiches in pork and onion gravy...
