One day last week I decided to go out mountain biking and decided to go to the Brecon Beacons National Park. Whilst in the B.B.N.P. I joined the Beacons Way trail up towards Llyn-y-fan Fawr then continued up to Picws Du overlooking Llyn-y-fan Fach, it was such a clear day I could see for miles in every direction the scenery was absolutley breathtaking!

Interesting story Mr Oliver... Yes I feel that the Black Mountains are Stunning especially in the Snow! You should have accepted his kind offer of a lift! You obviously needed warming up!

I went for a solo walk in the Black Mountains once, the wind came hurtling up the Bristol Channel bearing sleet and snow. An ice-ball filled my pocket. I crouched on the summit ridge behind a large rock as horizontal 75 mph winds laden with hard sticky sleet blasted my left-hand side. I descended through steep red Welsh mud and nearly did the splits.I gained the road, a farmer in a car offered me a lift, offered to move his sheepdog off the front seat to make way for me, I was so cold and wet that I declined his kind offer, I didn't want to steam up his windscreen, or flood his car with the melting sleet crust from my waterproof coat.

I went up Pen-Y-Fan Mountain in February 2005 with my friend Pete and his Westhighland Terrier named Jock. Great experience. Want to do it again some day when the sun is shining. The mist hindered the views which was a shame. Best part of the exercise was the hot cup of tea and a Twix from the tea van at the bottom. Marvellous.

Pen-Y-Fan mountain is well worth the climb because the views you see at the top are breath taking. plus it is a very friendly climb, everytime I climb it I always meet and chat with people from all over the world.

For me the best mountain in South Wales is Fan Gihirych between Crai and Abercraf, not the biggest but its "my" mountain, being almost opposite the cottage where my husband and I have had our holidays every year for the last 17 years. It's so peaceful and a place to rest and think and wish I was Welsh and had ben born in this most beautiful country in the world.

If you're an aviation buff like me then the Black Mountain to the east of the Brecon Beacons is the place to hillwalk, it has seven crash sites to search for and investigate, and the occasional low flying RAF jet is a bonus! And the views on a clear day are stunning, especially from the summit of Fan Hir and Fan Brycheiniog.

The Black Mountains are my favourite, spent a night in the bothy hut at Grwyne Fawr reservoir, outside there was snow on the ground and it was -20. Loved every minute of it, as for a single favourite mountain it has to be the Blorenge, when ever I go away from Abergavenny and come back along the A40 from Raglan you see the Blorenge and know you're nearly home.

I think wales is a wonderful place, Brecon being the best part! We go on holiday there more than once every year and it is beautiful. I haven't had the opportunity to live there but my parents being Welsh means that it always feels like home. I used to live in Swansea and that area is lovely too. the Brecon Beacons are my all time fave place and the veiws from our caravan window when we are there are just so breathtaking. It is worth the long drive there!

I'm one of the local Ambulancemen & I live at the foot of the Brecon Beacons. I can walk them at anytime of the year & take in the beautiful sites of Pen Y Fan, Corn Ddu & Cribin. I also fly helicopters in my spare time around the Beacon. I take my friends & family for pleasure flights when ever time permits. My wife & I are the luckiest people in the world. I can never see us moving.

The drive over the Berwyns from Llangynog to Bala is wonderful - the climb up out of the Tanat valley is hair raising and the views from the top of the pass across towards Snowdonia is magnificent.

Just had a great weekend in the Black mountains walking around. In Llanthony right on the edge of the Black Mountains the views on the top were something else; England and Hereford's Golden Valley one side, Wales the other WOW! I shall be back. Llanthony Abbey worth a look at dates back to the 13th century. I stayed at the Half Moon Inn well worth a long weekend there, food cheap and good real ale.

I could never choose, they are both wonderful, as my gran said if you are born in the hills, they will always be in your heart, and when i go home to Mid Wales and drive past Llangorse Lake with the Black mountains to my right and the sun setting behind the Brecon Beacons to my left it always brings a lump to my throat. How can any other place compare!

If you take the mountain road between Llanidloes & Machynlleth via Dylife you will drive over the highest point with a fantastic view. If, however, when you see lake Glaslyn in the distance, at Bryn y Fedwen, you leave your car and take the short walk up to the top of Foel Fadian you will have such a view that it will take your breath away. On a good day to the West you can see the sea, look North and you may see Snowdon, look south and you can see the Brecon Beacons. An amazing sight as if you were standing on a mighty pillar with all the world laid out at your feet.

The Brecon Beacons are amazing and I have thought so every day that I have lived near them. Being in Uni in (flat) England has made me appreciate our mountains so much more!

I live opposite the Brecon Beacons and have grown up there! Every morning I would wake up and see the Beacons! I now live in Birmingham but when I go home you appreciate the countryside more-you dont take for granted the beauty of these magnificent beacons gleaming in the light! I truly believe that the Brecon Beacons are one of the best sights in Wales-if not THE best sight in Wales!

The Abergwesyn Mountains are the most beutiful hill walking area to be found. I have watched the dawn break from the tops of GarnWen and also seen the sun go down from the peak on the Drygan, also I've seen the moonlight on Cefn Gardis Lake. But of course I have the privileg eof living in this beautiful area, free from tourists and traffic.

I spent 5 years living high in the Cambrians and could see the Beacons and the Black Mountains from my doorstep. But the beauty of where I was, was that you could walk all day long without seeing another soul

The Black Mountains have the best views and walking for many miles. In my opinion better than the Brecon Beacons. The colour of the Blacks are ever changing.

The Brecon Beacons were a large part of my early life. When people here ask me where I'm from, I always say "do you know the Brecon Beacons?" Bannau Brycheiniog - yr wyf yn caru meddol am danynt - I love thinking about the Brecon Becons.

Recently walked for three days on Offas Dyke. The stage between Pandy and hay-On-Wye was breathtaking, especially the views of Llanthony Abbey.
Returning to Mid-Wales and experiencing these mountains is a reaffiramtion of my roots!

The Black mountains win through for me, although the Beacons are probably prettier (especially with a snow line). The walk from Gospel pass to Waun Fach via Twmpa along the ridges makes for a stunning day out. The central bit of the Cambrian mountains and mid-wales tend to be a little generic though - not as shapely, although I'm looking forward to walking along the arans at some point.

Nobody's mentioned Aran Fawddwy... a hidden gem, rugged climb, superb views and a real sense of achievement when you reach the top, if you want to get away from the bustle of Snowdonia...

The Brecon Beacons are stunning, but I think the Black Mountains win on sheer ruggedness! When you are up on the top, and look down on the steepness of the valleys and the scenery, it's a truly amazing sight.

I love walking and the Black Mountains and the Cambrian Mountains are some of the best places to do it! The views are superb and from the Cotswolds and the Malverns, I can look west and see the peaks of Hay Bluff and Sugarloaf!

To me, the Cambrian Mountains are synonymous with Mid Wales. As you cross the border just after Shrewsbury, the territory changes and becomes more rugged. I find the sight of those green hills ahead quite uplifting - and best of all, i know i'm nearly home.

The Black Mountains around the Lanthony Abbey area: I have walked from the abbey along the offa's dyke path a few times now and I don't think there is a nicer place on earth than here. I have also pony trecked from this area up a mountain and down again WOW!

I don't think you can possibly choose a winner. I live in Talgarth which is situated with the Black Mountains on one side and the Brecon Breacons on the other.
They are both as wonderful as each other and I've spent a lot of my childhood years there as I do a lot of outdoor education with the cadet force. It's a truely remarkable place and there will always be room for Wales in my heart. Wales all the way!!!

The Black Mountains: I was born in Glasbury on Wye and now live on an island off the North East Coast of Newfoundland, Canada called Fogo Island. Wales will always be my home and growing up on the farm there I saw the mountains every day. I returned home to Glasbury for a visit a couple of years ago and I was breathless! I had forgotten just how beautiful they are. Cymru am Byth!

The Brecon Beacons: My friend wanted to go to Wales. I didn't know what to do there, but we arrived at Grawen campside and I didn't want to leave anymore. The possibilities to walk are great. I could have spend a lot more then 10 days in Wales and next year I hope I can come back!

I would like to say that The Brecon Beacons are the best mountains in Wales. I had to climb it earlier this year and it basically killed me but it was worth it.
