Prince Charles at Aber

Prince Charles

Last updated: 11 June 2009

BBC Wales is producing a half-hour TV programme to mark the 40th anniversary of Prince Charles' investiture as Prince of Wales on 1 July 1969:

  • Protecting The Prince...

  • The programme will tell the story of The Investiture, as it was witnessed through the eyes of the people of Wales.

In the Spring of 1969, Prince Charles spent a term at Aberystwyth University.

It was part of the Government's plans to make the Prince more in touch with Wales ahead of his investiture.

Share your memories of Prince Charles' stay in Aberystwyth in the comment box below.

Do you remember him surfing at Borth? Did you meet him? Did you support or oppose the investiture?

I was told by a porter in 1997 when I stayed for a week at the Aberystwyth Halls of Residence, that Prince Charles had just fitted in at the University, like one of the lads ... like the other students. I believe he said Charles had stayed in those halls. He thought Charles was a likable person. My only contact with him when he was first a young dad, was when he visited my home town of Tywyn, along with his first wife - Princess Diana. He was interested in the hooded raincover, my little nephew was wearing, that also hooked over the frame of the pushchair. He was asking how it worked. pe! rhaps he fancied one for the young William. I saw him and his detective horse riding on Tan y Bwlch one evening. I can't remember why I was down there tho'; probably looking for snagged mackerel spinners at the bottom of the stone jetty! Oh, and wasn't he driving around in a MGB GT V6 in those days? The car was in the Dark British Racing Green paint colour.

Charlie came to our modern history lectures in my second year in Aber and experienced Dai Hopkins in full flow extolling the virtues of socialism and republicanism. He also borrowed the late great Billy Fowler's biro in a welsh history tutorial! He usually wore tweeds and brogue shoes.

I remember Prince Charles very well indeed arriving at the college at 10 am in the morning every day Monday to Friday, all the time that he was in college in Aberystwyth... and the flags flying full mast on the college and the National Library.

I was a 1st year student at the time and shared Welsh lectures with Prince Charles in the language lab. Teddy Millward introduced us to him at the end of the 2nd week's lecture. We were all 2nd language Welsh speakers and he asked us if our parents spoke Welsh. He then informed us that his DID NOT!!!I was also 'on duty' giving out programmes for the Monday evening concerts in the Exam Hall the week Prince Charles chose to attend. I was instructed by Professor Parrott to dress smartly instead of wearing conventional student dress of denims!! Needless to say, I still went in my jeans.

I had the pleasure of being a visiting scholar fom the University of Wisconsin at Aberystwyth University during the summer of 1969 and while there the then Registrar Tom Owens assigned me the office on the second floor of the main building on the waterfront that had been used by Charles during his spring term. I am returning to Aber with my son and grandson this July/August and look forward to reliving some of those memorable moments.
