Genealogical Society

The Society at work in Llanymynech

Last updated: 31 December 2007

For over ten years the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society has been hard at work creating records of social history in Mid Wales. In December 2007 David Petley-Jones described the Society's publications:

  • More local history resources in Mid Wales...

  • "Since 1995 the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society has been carrying out its main objective of making genealogical records available for everyone interested in preserving important aspects of Welsh social history.

In particular, it has two teams of members who are involved in the transcribing of parish registers up to at least 1837, and in making copies of all memorial inscriptions.

The Society at work in LlanymynechAt present the former covers about half the county, and the latter about 90% Since 1995 the Society has published, to date, 195 booklets, a set of microfiche of the 1841 census and 2 CD's of the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

80 of the booklets cover the memorial inscriptions, issued by parish, and they include as many existing and closed chapels as it is possible to copy records of.

The Society at work in LlanymynechThese are ongoing projects, and the aim is to complete transcriptions of these records for the whole county. One of our main priorities for our publications is accuracy - the details in each booklet are carefully checked before being issued, and we are always happy to know of any errors so they can be corrected in future editions.

When we have completed the county registers up to 1837 we aim to start on the more modern ones. More information and a complete list of our publications is on our website listed to the right of this page."

I have just discovered this site and have found it very interesting. I am looking for a John Falkner born 1873 in Wales. His father was also John Falkner and his mother's maiden name was Anne Holt. My relative,John was married in Toronto, Ont. in 1922.For me the search is complicated because I do not know where in Wales he was born and I can not identify what towns/townships are in Wales as opposed to in England. If anyone has a John Falkner with the same parents in their tree please contact me via email.

My ancestor was raised by his grandparents in Chapel House in Llanon. His mother died in childbirth while his father was out to sea. I believe he was raised by his grandparents, his mother's parents. The grandfather was vicar of the chapel at that time. My ancestor was James Parry Thomas born Jan 13, 1864. Can anyone help me. My mother was a war bride, and came to Canada in 1946. She was Pegi Pari Thomas.
