Llanfyllin Workhouse

Take a photo tour around the Union Workhouse in Llanfyllin which was home to hundreds of local paupers for more than a century. Known as 'Y Dolydd', the workhouse was one of three Welsh properties competing in the BBC television series Restoration during the summer of 2004. The pictures and captions were sent to us by Llanfyllin Dolydd Building Preservation Trust.

Y Dolydd was built in 1838-40 as the Llanfyllin Union Workhouse to the design of Thomas Penson (1790-1859), a Montgomeryshire Surveyor and a notable architect of his day.

I used to live at y doyldd, when I was eight my family bought the building and spent a year renovating and opened it as a adventure centre. Had a great time there until unfortunately my father died there and we moved away it was in good state when we left, came back years later and saw it was in terrible repair, glad someone is working on it.

My great great grandfather David Price was an inmate at the Hay workhouse in 1877 where unfortunately he died. I am trying to find out as much as I can on the workhouse and if any records of inmates at this time are still in existance.

It is such a beautiful building. With the shortage of affordable housing, couldn't the site be developed with the next generation of first time buyers in the area, and certainly not for buy-to-rents! The site is large enough to incorporate some degree of cottage industry. With a little imagination this could be a jewel in the crown of the local community.

I am researching the town and found a fabulous house I really want to live in. This is amazing, how lucky are we to have the internet!

Latest is that the local community organisation that has grown up to support the workhouse is on the edge of putting a deal together to buy it. There has been a very successful festival held there for the last 4 summers, to raise money and awareness to keep the campaign going and this has led to a hopeful last minute stay of execution for the building. There is immense community support to save it and to turn it into a centre for local innovation, supporting permaculture, local arts and much more. Anyone interested in getting involved or finding out more should look at the websites of the workhouse festival, the new community partnership trying to save it and the workhouse trust that has preserved it so far.

This is really interesting as I am researching my family tree and understand my grandmother's family came from LLanfyllin and that my great aunt used to live opposite this building. I am interested to find out more about the area.

Is the workhouse open to the public? I am doing my dissertation on controversial social history and its display and my focus is on work houses and whether they are too uncomfortable for our collective viewing. Any answers?

It's a real shame that the workhouse has been left to ruin for so long. It's brilliant that the community of Llanfyllin is now working to try and save it. Well done!
