Cardigan Castle

Cardigan Castle

Last updated: 28 April 2008

The birthplace of the National Eisteddfod, Cardigan Castle was one of three Welsh properties featured in the summer 2004 series of 'Restoration' on BBC Two.

Despite a vigorous campaign by local supporters, Cardigan Castle failed to reach the final of the BBC's Restoration series - but there are still hopes that the building can be saved from ruin. For more details, go to the BBC News Archive

Cardigan Castle was the location for the first ever National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1176, held under the patronage of Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd.

Cardigan Castle supporters took their campaing to the 2004 National Eisteddfod in NewportThe town's local weekly newspaper The Tivyside Advertiser has always been a leading campaigner in the fight to save Cardigan Castle and kept a supporter's diary as part of the 'Restoration' series:

Me and a few friends used to play in the castle grounds when we were kids and always remembered it like it was a secret jungle, we always made our way to the pill box and watched all the traffic from above, we also tried to locate the entrance to the long lost tunnel which is supposed to lead under the river but never found it, i was told by a friend that the tunnel does exist and was opened up in 1912 but was considered too dangerous to enter due to the large amount of green algee and slippery steps, apparently the tunnel was damaged in the 70s when the local council built the foot bridge and one of the steel rods used to support the bridge smashed through the outer wall of the tunnel filling it completely with water, some say they could see the rushing water filling it up.

I visited Cardigan every year for over 20 years and parked by the castle without even realising there was a castle behind that great wall! What a surprise and what a great place - please save it so I can visit it restored!!

It was interesting to read Chris Jenkins' comment. We would like to hear directly from him and from anyone with anecdotes about the castle. The Friends of Cardigan Castle do a lot of maintenance work in the gardens and we steward on open days during the summer. The town is planning special celebrations for 2010 - 900 year anniversary of Cardigan - and it would be good to produce something to commemorate this.

I was born in factory house on the strand the house was all most opposite one of the enterances to the castle. As a boy in the nineteen sixties & seventies I use to play in the castle and I remember there was a tunnel leading up to another level and if you were quite you could make your way up to the pill box that over looked the old bridge. It was like a little adventure. I must say we were not supposed to be in there but boys will be boys. I hope they can save the castle because it holds some fond memories for me.

I have been tracing my ancestry and Cardigan is my link between Wales and America. Records indicate my family lived there before coming to Maryland in the late 1600's. I wish I could come to Wales one day and see the castle. I have seen photos on the websites of Cardigan and the countryside, and I get a sense of peace and connection, no wonder I love the sea so much... I want the castle to be saved so that I ,along with my family, can have a connection, a bond, a sense of where we came from.. It's an issue of pride and heritage...

I just couldn,t believe it, what was behind that wall, when I seen what was there. It was just amazing you just don't see houses like that, it's history. My 8yr old daughter tells her friends its not just a house it's a castle. This should be restored not sold to some property invester and should be kept so our children'schildren can see how things were. My friends said they would love to visit. It's history and history should not be forgotten.

I visit Cardigan 15 to 20 times a year, I'm amazed at what a wonderful town and comunity you have, the restoration of the castle can only help and improve this already wonderful town, what are you stalling for? Do what you can to make it happen.

Cardigan is a wonderful place, having lived there and had a business there for a considerable time. I know it needs more tourist interests in the town itself other than the lovely river. Cardigan needs to give a reason for visitors to park up, look around and spend money in the towns shops. If the castle was renovated, and funds are availble through different funding methods to do this, then you have the reason to make a long visit to the town, not just pass through with a bag of chips at the side of the beautiful river. I backed a plan years ago when a local man wanted to put jet skis on the river during the summer to bring in visitors, and of course, their money. The council wouldn't have it. Cardigan needs more tourist attractions to bring people in to the town, especially now it has the bypass. Cardigan Island farm at Gwbert has started the ball rolling, so come on Cardigan people, and councillors, you must renovate the lovely place, now, not later. I miss Cardigan greatly.

I believe the saving and developement of Cardigan Castle can help in the regeneration of the town. It would bring in visitors and help develope jobs through tourisim in the area. It would be a positive sight at which local history could be kept alive for further generations.

I think Cardigan Castle should be saved as it is a main feature of Cardigan and will be missed if taken down. I've been visiting Cardigan for many years now and have visited Cardigan Castle and it is apart of the history of Cardigan. It should be saved!

Cardigan Castle should be saved because we still haven't got all the answers from the past and Cardigan Castle is something that could unlock secrets tales etc. Cardigan castle is our history. It was built for a reason and is still standing today. What's to say that there isn't an underground passage that goes under the River Teifi that everyone has spoken about for years? My father has believed this story since he was a little boy. He grew up knowing a builder friend who has visited the site where it actually goes down under the river. When the river gets really low - which only happens once a year - you can actually see the stone botton and there's something that's just quite not right, something funny, something sinister about the castle. We have the right to save the castle and we have the money too. Lots of people think that by doing this up, it's a waste of money, what are they on about???? This could be a breakthrough for Cardigan. 900 years have gone passed and no one has done anything. We have the right and the power to get something sorted. This could be the big breakthrough that we have needed as a little market town. Let's sort this out and let's get something done about it!! Remember the castle as it used to be - courageous strong and powerful, not droopy and withering away!

Jacqueline Jones, Porth Rhondda (born ceredigion)
The castle should be restored because it is of cultural importance. It could also generate work in the area, and have a complex of business units, a library (the existing one is inadequately stocked) an art museum, live events programme amongst other things. Lord Rhys had festivals there so it should be more than just a monument but a part of ceredigion's future too. And encourage the arts in ceredigion just as he would have wanted.

Cardigan Castle still has to be saved somehow. The 'Restoration' bid may have failed but that doesn't mean that everyone should give up. Those seeking to make profit from the publicity may have taken a back seat but those who truly care about the castle itself haven't given up yet.
