Local BBC News on your Mobile Phone!

Mobile phone

Last updated: 23 September 2008

Want the local news as it happens while you're on the go? No Problem! The BBC Wales news service is now available on WAP mobile phones.

Try before you buy - check out the BBC's WAP emulator.

What can I get?
Local BBC News headlines for Mid Wales are updated throughout the day, and you can find them on your WAP phone as well as here on the website.
What is WAP?
WAP services are often referred to as 'mobile internet services'. Much like your home computer allows you to browse the internet using a phone line, your mobile phone can do the same for certain types of information. At the moment WAP mobile services are mostly text-based, but this will change in future to include more images and graphics.

Not every phone is WAP enabled, although more and more new phones are able to receive WAP services.

WAP mobile services require you to register with a service provider, much like you need an Internet Service Provider (eg: BT or Freeserve) for surfing the web. Each mobile network has its own service provider - for example Vodafone's is called Vizzavi. If you are not sure who your network's service provider is you should contact your network, who should be able to give you the help you need setting up your phone.

What is WAP like?
WAP services are designed to provide up to the minute information, which you can access at your convenience. WAP services are designed to be simple and quick to use, with simple menus and text links to help you find your way around the service.

Much like using the internet on your PC, you are usually billed by your mobile phone service provider for the time you have spent online. Check with your service provider to find out what the tariff is - some providers offer 'free time' online using WAP.

How can I access WAP on my mobile?
The following are generic instructions that will suit some common models - note that menus and options vary on different phones, so consult the manufacturers instructions first!

Go to 'Services'

Select 'Bookmarks'

Select 'Add Bookmarks'

Type in the title 'BBC WAP', then press 'Select'

Enter the address: 'www.bbc.co.uk/mobile' - then press 'Select'

Select 'WAP BBC' on your phone - this will then take you though to the BBC WAP service

Select 'News'

Scroll down to Wales and press 'Select'

Select 'Where I Live news'

This should then take you through to the service - if you have problems, contact your Service Provider.

To find out more about BBC Services on your mobile phone visit the BBC Mobile Services website.
