"I don't remember when I started but I used to give blood in Birmingham and Staffordshire, every 6 months as now.
In those days and until recently we had a cardboard folder and each donation we had a certificate, which was stuck in the folder. They went computerized a while ago now so when I gave last year I had no idea I was heading for the 50th donation.
My early pints were given whilst I was working, we had a bus arrive and I was working as a draughtsman in the city so didn't lose pay, I remember we usually walked back to be quicker!
I have always given, I don't think anything of it, have never had an adverse reaction, but they have tightened up on their medical conditions, but we still have the same warm welcome and free drink and bikkies as well.
The venue for this award ceremony on 8 August 2007 was the Metropole in Llandrindod Wells. A truly massive hotel.
Those of us on 50 and slightly more had a certificate in a box, those who had given up to 100 had a glass bowl if I remember correctly and those who had given bone marrow had a welsh love spoon."

Both my husband John & I have given 50 pints each and attended the presentation evening at Llandrindod Wells. Unfortunatly I am unable to donate anymore as I had a transfusion in 1982 after the birth of our daughter.I am afraid now John will overtake me as it has always been been his aim!!

I haven't given blood recently, but have done so many times in the past. My husband also. In fact, he has donated over 100 pints. We see it as a wonderful way to help our community. The reason why we decided to do this follows. When I was 25, I hemorrhaged and required 6 units of blood. Back then, people could donate blood and the donation was creditedto the sick person's account. Since then, my husband, Joe, has given fairly regularly, because of the obvious need, and because it is so simple to do.
