Running Doctors

Drs Mike and Stephanie Warrick

Last updated: 15 January 2008

Drs Mike and Stephanie Warrick from Llandrindod Wells have run marathons all over the world. In January 2008 Stephanie told us more about their running and about their recent feat in Bhutan:

  • More on Llandrindod Wells...

  • "Running is a wonderful way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors. It has been a marvellous way to explore the hills of mid Wales where we live.

We have been running marathons for the last 20years, Mike has run 20 and Stephanie 17. The London Marathon, which we have both run several times, is fantastic.

It is so well organised and the atmosphere and support of the crowds is amazing. The last mile running with tired legs past the Houses of Parliament to Buckingham Palace with the crowds cheering is unforgettable.

Running marathons is also a great way to go sightseeing. As well as running the London Marathon we have run marathons in Paris, New York, Florence, Rome, Dublin, Snowdonia and most recently Bhutan. Bhutan is a fascinating place, it's a Bhuddist kingdom in the Himalayas and lies between China to the north and India to the south.

The marathon route took us on a tour of the Paro valley and then up to the Chele La pass at 3800 metres with a total climb of 2000metres.

Before the marathon we had a few days to acclimatize walking up to the magnificent Tigers Nest Monastery at 3000metres on the first day followed by a two day trek into the hills.

It gave us time to take in the culture of this fascinating country and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. We had spectacular views of mount Jholmalhari, Bhutans highest peak at 7400metres.

Mike enjoys fell running and last year was the fastest over 50 to run the 50mile Long Myndd Hike he also ran the 100mile Cant Canolbarth in 22 hours 51mins coming second.

We both work as GPs in Mid Wales and are always trying to persuade our patients to take more exercise. It's the best way to prevent obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression, far better than taking pills and its fun!"

    Stephanie Warrick
