For good accommodation, book during the Festival for the next year. Places in and near Hay on Wye are booked from year to year, so be ready to consider a 10-15 mile radius. Doesn't matter - it's worth it.

If you want accommodation in or close to Hay, book early, as much of the accommodation gets booked up by the New Year.

My ex-fiancee went one year to Hay and said it was wonderful - she had never seen so many books. She then went on a scenic journey just north of Hay - New Radnor Forest and Builth Wells - and said the sights of the mountains were fantastic.

Try Bozbooks for brilliant entertainment - the conversations in here are brilliant and the books are pretty good!

Bring a mac which packs up small because you do get showers

I've been coming to Hay for more than ten years and my advice would be to bring a large bag of different clothes to cater for all kinds of weather. Wellies are essential!

You must try the sheep's milk ice cream - it's the best!

Penny from Barry
Go to the catering tent when events are on because then you don't get stuck in a queue!

If you've got children, take them to The Den - there's optional dressing up, singing, dancing - very entertaining for kids. You can chill out in The Den at any time - there are chairs, tables, soft play and pens. There are two free shows a day but you need to book for these as they sell out within days.

Wear comfy shoes. You're on your feet and walking around all the time. Bring lots of patience and understanding. Sometimes the time of an event changes half an hour before it's due to begin - because it's moved to a bigger venue to accommodate more people

Tony and Philippa from Birmingham
Park in one of the car parks on the outskirts of the town - otherwise you get caught up in jams. The best tip is come and enjoy yourself. The concentration of events in a very small place makes moving from A to B very easy
