Gold Award

First Minister, Rhodri Morgan and Edith Wakumire Presenting Gold Star Communities Award to Hay-on-Wye and Timbuktu

Last updated: 05 August 2008

In August 2008, at the Welsh National Eisteddfod in Cardiff, Michael Eccles, a Director of the Fair Trade Company Jump4Timbuktu.org collected a Gold Star Community Award on behalf of Timbuktu and Hay-on-Wye from the Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Edith Wakumire, UN Awardee and Anti-poverty champion from Uganda. Here. Michael tells us more about the project:

"The Award, initiated by the United Nations, was given to both communities for excellence in community partnership, in contributing towards peace, prosperity and understanding and towards achieving 'Gold Star Community' status. Hay-on-Wye have begun their twinning initiative by developing medical links with Timbuktu co-ordinated by Medics4Timbuktu.org, by educational links focused on the activities lead by Gwernyfed High School, and by the fair trade initiative Jump4Timbuktu.org in partnership with a co-operative of 57 Artisan Associations in Timbuktu. Jump4Timbuktu was set up specifically at the request of the Timbuktu authorities to help them trade their way out of poverty."
