Hay's Past Postmen

Roderick Williams sent us two old photos of the post office workers of Hay-on-Wye which were taken in the 1950s.

Hay on Wye's postal workers in the 1950s

Roderick Williams: "My late father Baden C Williams born at Hay in 1900 and was postmaster there from about 1945 until 1963. I was born at the Post Office in July 1947. I

My late uncle (Knobby) Augustus Sidney Williams kept an ironmongery shop in Hay. My grandad William Williams was a insurance agent for the Prudential, affectionately known as Bonus Williams or Billy Bonus by some. He was also a town councillor."

Both sides of my family come from Hay-on-Wye. May father's family was Parmee and my mother's Prosser. I have been informed that my great-great-great-great grandparents were the innkeepers at the Griffin Inn, Llyswen, around 1860. They were Thomas and Ann Prosser. They are buried in Cymdu at St. Michael's Church. Does anyone have any information of either side of my family?

I know some time has gone by since a comment was last posted here, but I just want to reply to Jacqui's post.My grandfather, Augustus Sidney 'Sid' Williams, owned a number of Morris Travellers and I do believe that the Jack Russell you remember was named Judy and was a gift to my mother from my father. My mother wasn't (and still isn't) a fan of dogs, so she lived with my grandparents.I'm building up the family tree slowly.

Reply to Avona, Aberdare regarding relatives. I don't think we are related as Williams (Sidney) Williams was still in Hay until the late 1950's where he died.In answer to Jacqui Peskett I am 99.9%certain we are related from the info you have given. If I don't get into contact with you first, you will find me on Friends Reunited and Genes Reunited. I think it would be nice to re-establish a link with my long lost cousins as your move down south cut you off completely as we did not know your addresses etc. My sister has a lot of family info and you would be surprised what ! we have turned up as far as Essex, Devon, Somerset and the connections with the Stace family of Essex and even possible links with Ivor Novello Davies's. Although the latter seems difficult to prove for sure.

I would be interested in why your website has at some time mentioned the name of Phyllis Morgans. In reply to Robin De Smet of St. Albans (see above)who is trying to trace an artist by the name of Phyllis Morgans who painted in Suffolk. My parents (Phyllis Morgans was my mother) lived in Walberswick for many years and Phyllis Morgans was an Honourary Freeman of the Worshipful of Painters. She exhibited in many exhibitions and had numerous one-man shows.

William Arnold Williams was my Grandfather - my mother is Rosemary (known as Joan) Williams and she was born in Hay on Wye in 1933 before moving to Bosbury and then Hereford. I knew Baden Williams when I was growing up and I can recall visiting Hay with my parents and having hairaising rides in his Morris Traveller, I also recall he had a Jack Russell dog?

Sorry I have no connections with Hay-on Wye but you mentioned Phyllis Morgans. I am trying to trace details (dates) of an artist of the same name who painted in Suffolk. I would be grateful for your kind help if yours is the same lady I am looking for. Many thanks.

Augustus Sidney Williams was my Grandfather. Many happy memories of Hay in the '70s and '80s. We used to go up onto Hay Bluff common in the boot of his Morris Minor Traveller for picnics.
