Phyllis' Hay Photos

Last updated: 24 November 2005

Phyllis Morgan has lived in Hay-on-Wye for almost a century and has sent us some old photos of Hay from days gone by. If you've got any shots of the town in days gone by, you can send them to us and we'll add them to the website.

This is the house where Phyllis Morgan's family lived for 300 years.

  • Phillys Morgan has also sent us her memories of growing up in Hay, and also a poem extolling the virtues of her hometown.

John S Batts from Sydney, Australia thinks he recognises some of the players in photo no 3.

John:"I think I can help with identifying some of the people in the photograph of "Hay Football Team" since 2 of my relatives are present. The team is Hay St. Mary's with their team colours of Blue & White hoops. The location looks like Edgar Street, Hereford, so the Cup may well be either the Herefordshire Football Association Challenge Cup or the HFA Charity Bowl. The finals of both were played in Hereford.

Now to people and some identifications or suggestions: BACK ROW (standing)& from L to R: 1 ?Tom Lewis; 2 no ID; 3 player (no ID); 4 head (no ID);5 Bill GEORGE; 6 A.H. James;7 Billy GUNDY (goalkeeper);8 ?Dai Ransome;9 player (no ID); 10 suited (no ID); 11 Sam Evans(in coat).

MIDDLE ROW (L to R): 1 unknown (suit);2 Alex Massie (in suit);3 Trevor Batts;4 perhaps Sid Bowen?;5 Ivor Morgan (with big cup); 6 Trevor Price; unknown player.

FRONT ROW (L to R)Stuart Batts; (?)Trevor Pugh; + 2 crouching unknowns.

The date? Hay St. Mary's won the HFA Challenge Cup in season 1936-37, but this seems earlier; they won the HFA Charity Bowl in 1938-30 too. Date of early 1930s. Trevor Batts was born in Nov, 1915; it's doubtful that he looks less than 18 in the picture, so 1933 is probably the earliest to date this photo.
