Mike: "This is a photo of my Mother, the young woman who is carrying the football half dressed as a footballer and half dressed as a cricketer. It was one of the early carnivals which walked from the town of Hay to the top moor lodge on the Hereford road. If my mother was alive today she would be 102 years old putting her age at about 22 years old in this photo taken in about 1922."

    I am related to the Chaloners of Clyro. Peter Chaloner built and lived in Ashbrook House. He also built and ran the Swan Inn as well as working in some capacity for the Baskervilles. My GGgrandfather was Richard Chaloner, Peters Brother. Richard was a blacksmith and had a bussiness in Hay before immigrating to Canada around 1849.

There's also his brothers, Baden b1900 and Arnold b1903 and his sister, Mona b1896. Augustus 'Sid' Williams had the ironmongers shop in High Town, opposite the castle and Baden was the Post Master at Hay. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    To Betty U.S.A. The name Pugh from Clyro you referred to, I believe belongs to my parents. My father died in 1995 but still has close relations in the area. He was born in Glasbury-on-Wye and his fathers' parents lived in Boughrood. My father and grandfathers name was Edward. My grandfather was born the 28-4-1888. His father died young, leaving young children, so times were very hard. I have an uncle who is 85 now,also another uncle who is in his 70's. They possibly could provide more information.If this has been helpful please contact again.

    Re. william Newman Clyro Postmaster. I lived in Bronydd, a mile out of Clyro from 1940-1953. next door was'Newmie' Miss Sarah Newman, a relation to William the Postmaster. Her father Harry, was the pig killer according to my mother, who is now 92 years old. I think Newmie died in the sixties. She had a relative called Lottie Thomas from Tonypandy, but from her mothers side. My mother talks about an Arthur Newman who stayed on her fathers farm then went on to become a Police Inspector in wales. Probably in the 1940's. Also related to him we think was a william 'Billy' Newman living in Llandrindod Wells in the '50's.

    In November 1965, aged 19 I came to Wales and stayed at Hay on wye,at Ann Dearden's,in a lovely huge old house called WyeCliff.I really enjoyed being the Dearden's family guest. In March 1966,I got married to Mr Philip Dowding,a really nice good man,older than me,in Llandrindod town hall. Then my son Lawrence Philip Dowding was born at Wye-Cliff,helped by Nurse Price and Ann Dearden. Ann became my son's godmother. Then Wye-Cliff house went on fire... My son and I came once to see her in the small new house. Now,I am 61 years old I tried to find out from The Town hall ne! ws about the Dearden family,Martin Clare Annete Celia ....no results! Could anyone help me to find where the Deardens are staying? I'd love to communicate with them again,they all had been so sweet! I am looking,too,for some Dowding's. Grand nieces of Philip Dowding....Just for remembering him. I should be very pleased ,too,to have news or adress of Neil Hitchcox ,an old friend,his family had a grocery:cafe shop;

    I notice that there are Pughs from Clyro mentioned. My great-great grandfather was born in Clyro (Thomas Pugh), but that would have been around l821. He married Elizabeth ?? They lived in the "field houses", so I guess they were pretty poor. They had sons, Gomer (my great grandfather, who migrated to Pennsylvania in the states) Arthur, Moses, William and I believe a few more, maybe a Joseph. I know that's a long, long time ago, but just wondering if there is a connection. I guess Pugh is a very common name in Wales, so probably a long shot. Anyway, if there is any info it would be appreciated. We were in Wales a few years ago and I wanted to see so much more, but we were on tour and of course, they couldn't cater to my needs. We were in the town of LLangolan. I loved it.

    I am replying re William Newman Clyro the Postmaster. He was my Great Grandfather on my Father's mother's side. My grandmother was Eleanor Newman and she married Charles Owen Ruddick from Brecon in about 1909 in Charters Towers Queensland Australia and was, I think, his eldest daughter.

    For Derek Cootes, the Crown hotel is the building that houses Jigsaw world opposite Barclays bank, and Coopers Hall is near the old Moor Estate which is accessed from the road to Clifford and Nantyglatwr lane. If you walk that way you will find addresses that may mean something to you, for further info you should pop into some of the local shops, maybe Eric Pugh on the pavement.
