Michael Morpurgo was a captivating speaker and reader of his own work. This children's event was the best talk I (an adult) went to this year. It would be great to see Hay Festival's own paperback anthology published and on sale at each festival, presumably called "Making Hay" with a strikingly designed cover and showcasing short extracts from books of some of the authors appearing. What a cross-section of subjects would be brought together. A collectable book in its own right. I think festival goers' would buy it.

I went to see John Irving, my all time hero. It was fantastic, a dream come true. He is the most amazing character! As he said to Peter, life is always more bizarre and strange than fiction. This was the first time I'd been since seeing Margaret Attwood a few years ago, so I didn't realise quite how far out of town the main event is now! However, I found it charming and very well laid out, with lots of places to sit and eat, drink or - of course - read! Fantastic. Well done all, I'll be back. I might even become a friend!!

A very good festival despite the weather but next year could something be done about the programme on the website, it was almost impossible to negotiate?

Too much time occupied by event chairs/interviewers who seem to want to glory in the limelight rather than present the main speakers.

How was Alan Bennett sold out before the programme went to press? Were all tickets reserved for Friends?
