Timmy's Garden - July

Timothy O'Neill from Felinwynt near Cardigan reveals all in the secret diary of a vegetable gardener.

Vegetable patch

4th July

Harvested the row of Red Sunset shallots, put them on the bench in the polytunnel to dry. Cut down and picked the last of the first planting of the broad beans and planted out two rows cabbage one of them red.

Mixed potatoesDug some potatoes at Rhos y Grug, they are supposed to be Red Duke of York which were brought from the Flower Pot, Cardigan, but they where a mixed lot as the picture shows.

10th July

Harvested the row of Golden Gourmet shallots, put them in the polytunnel with the others and the spring planted garlic, these where very disappointing with a lot rotten.

11th July

Planted out 9 Cauliflower plants, 6 where the shallots had been and three where we have already had harvested cauliflowers, hopefully they will be ready to harvest about October.

12th July

Planted out 20 mixed lettuce from where I harvested the garlic.

13th July

Planted out 12 Brussel Sprouts and 6 Purple Sprouting Broccoli plants in the bed where the potatoes were.

17th July

Planted out 6 Wong Bok, and 18 Pak Choi in the polytunnel, also planted out another row of spinach, replacing the row we took out yesterday. Had two failing cabbages which I replaced, they seemed to have damaged stems, I might have pinched them when I transplanted them.

Tidied up the polytunnel, we took out some of the marigolds and planted them out in the garden.

31st July

Dug over the ground cleared of the peas and beans, planted out a row of Wong Bok and two of Pak Choi. Planted out another four Purple Sprouting Broccoli after digging another row of potatoes. The spring cauliflower and the January King cabbage have gone very leggy and will not do very well planted out so I won't bother. I must plant a month later next year as I never have ground clear when they should go out.

Lifted the pickling onions and put them in the potting shed to dry. Although we have had rain in the last weeks the ground when dug is still very dry.

PumpkinsWe have pinched out the growing points from the pumpkin, some of the pumpkins which where developing are going yellow so have to be removed.
