Timmy's Garden - June

Timothy O'Neill from Felinwynt near Cardigan reveals all in our online secret diary of a vegetable gardener.

Vegetable patch

1st June

Planted out a pumpkin bought at the plant fair at Rhosygilwen, planted it in the blue quarter barrel we have. The variety is Crown Prince, which should hopefully give us bluey/purple football size pumpkins.

5th June

Planted out another row of beetroot alongside the one planted out earlier which do not look very promising.

6th June

Filled in the blanks in the summer cauliflower and spring cauliflower, used the variety Andes. Had to plant out a whole tray of cabbage (9 cells) Golden Acre/Primo, had to also re-plant the Early Purple Sprouting broccoli as like the cabbage none of the earlier planting germinate. Also sown some Swede (Best of All).

Vegetable patch

9th June

Lifted three roots of the Jersey Royals.

12th June

Lifted the Vitessa garlic planted on 12th October last year. Of the 20 cloves planted lifted 19 garlic, also lifted the rest of the first row of the Jersey Royals.

Brought three pepper plants from Penrallt Garden Centre as we have lost two of the peppers planted earlier and one is looking very poorly and showing signs of being attacked by something. The brought ones have replaced them.

Vegetable patch

19th June

Tied up the cucumbers, they are not growing upwards as I'd expect, but they are flowering so time will tell. Lifted the Ivory garlic planted at the same time as the Vitessa, only had 12 bulbs, put them in the polytunnel to dry with the other garlic which are drying off very well.

20th June

Planted out 18 swede (Best of All) into the bed left by the garlic. Had the first picking of broad beans. Put up a wind break to the inside of the polytunnel door, hopefully this will allow me to keep the door open when the wind is blowing.

27th June

Potted on the brassicas, cabbage, red cabbage, cauliflower and spring cauliflower, winter cabbage, Brussel sprouts and purple sprouting. As per usual we are going to have problems as to where we plant these out. Had another picking of broad beans. Sown some more lettuce seeds, two lots of mixed and the Cut and Come Again ones. Also sown some spinach, Wong Bok (Chinese cabbage), Pak Choi and Rosette Pak Choi.
