Timmy's Garden - May

Timothy O'Neill from Felinwynt near Cardigan reveals all in the secret diary of a vegetable gardener.

Polytunnel floor

3rd May

Planted out a row of Boltardy beetroot sown in cells on the 4th of April. I have decided to throw away the tomato plants I have grown and went to Penrallt and brought six more, will plant them next weekend.

9th May

Planted out the tomato plants (back row 2 Shirley, 1 Sun Baby and three Shirley, front row 2 Gardeners Delight 1 Sun Baby, 1 Supersweet and 1 Sweet Million all brought from Penralt last week, 11 plants in total). Planted marigold plants around the tomatoes. Also planted out 14 Blue Jade Sweet Corn plants into the bed that had the lettuce in over the winter.

Planted out 14 runner bean plants and 10 Borlotti Lingua Di Fuoco plants and 10 Borlotti Lamon also planted out two rows of ten plants of Purple Queen.

Planted out two courgette plants outside.

13th May

Planted some french beans (Purple Queen) in among the maize plants about 18 seeds.

17th May

Sown 30 cells with Boltardy beetroot, the ones planted out in the garden a few weeks back look to have failed.

22nd May

Dug the last of the potatoes from the polytunnel, total yield was 59lbs 3ozs. Planted out three cucumbers and 4 melons in their place, also planted out another courgette plant. Something has eaten through the stem so do not know whether it will survive

23rd May

Planted out two rows (22 plants) of Snow White Celeriac. Weeded the bunching onions and the carrot row. There was for some reason only two thirds of a row of carrots so have completed the row by sowing some Supreme Chantenay Red Cored. The pickling onions seem to be coming well, much better than thje spring onions I sowed.

Vegetable patchPicture taken on the 23rd May as you can see the ground is very dry so irrigation started today, the sprinkler just about covers the whole plot.

25th May

Sown 14 cells of Braveheart (Brussel sprouts), 10 cells each of January King (winter cabbage), Early Purple Sprouting (broccoli), Andes (summer cauliflower), Walcheren Winter 3 - Armado Andes (spring cauliflower, 9 cells each of Golden Acre/Primo and Red Flare (cabbage). I am a bit late with the Brussel Sprouts and the Purple Sprouting Brocolli but I expect when these are ready to go out I will have difficulty finding ground to plant them into.

29th May

Carrots

Pulled the last of the carrots from the polytunnel, these were sown 5th October last year and have done very well, we have been using them since early April. Dug over the bed and planted out six sweet pepper plants (Worldbeater).

30th May

Planted out the leeks, five rows of thirteen outside and twenty in the polytunnel, it will be interesting to see how they do compared with the ones planted outside. Sown mixed seeds of carrots, spring onions and radish among the peppers planted out yesterday.
