6th March
Planted six of the runner bean plants in the polytunnel, top dressed the potatoes with some universal (15 - 15 - 15) and gave them a good soaking. One or two are showing the affects of the frost but should grow away now, all but one are through. Planted out 10 cauliflowers sown back in the autumn. Filled in the gaps in the broad beans sown earlier with 12 plants which were sown into pots.
7th March
Sown another three rows of broad beans (Red Epicure) and a row of peas (Hurst Green Shaft). I just hoed the ground for the beans and did not really achieve a good depth of tilth so they were not pushed in very well, will have to keep an eye on them germinating. I dug the ground for the peas so they went in to a good tlith but probably a bit deep. The seeds were soaked in paraffin to help deter the mice from eating the seeds.

Planted out the lettuce, rocket and lambs lettuce sown a few weeks back into the polytunnel. They were a bit leggy so will have to see how they do in the ground, hopefully they will improve.
13th March
Planted out the potatoes at Rhos y Grug, 4 rows of Red Duke of York, 3 of Santa, Picasso and Desiree all rows had 5 potatoes to them. Planted a row with one Picasso and three King Edwards from the kitchen (14 rows in total). Planted as I dug, the weather turned very wet later on so it was as well.
Sown two rows of Radish and a row of Spring Onions in the lettuce bed
14th March
Sown 10 No Name melons, 6 Worldbeater sweet peppers, 6 Marketmore cucumbers and 6 Zucchini Hybrid courgettes into individual pots.
21st March
Potted on tomato plants; 1 Golden Sunrise, 2 Cream Sausage and 8 Garden Pearl. Sown 15 cells of broccoli (Sakura) and spinach (Trinidad). Sown 5 cells of Mixed lettuce, Cut and Come Again, Red Salad Bowl, Lollo Rossa and American Salad (Land Cress). I threw out the Bijou lettuce seed as they were getting quite old. Sown 40 cells of Snow White (Celeriac) and Musselbourgh (leeks) into a pot. Potted on 6 cabbage plants and 9 cauliflower.
27th March
The Broad Beans and the peas sown on the 7th March look as if they have been plundered by mice there are holes all over the place so I have sown another packet of Red Epicure beans into pots either to fill the holes or plant up in earlier plantings place.

This is very useful for me. I was especially interested to see that soaking the beans and peas had not prevented the mice from pinching the seeds and young plants. I don't have a polytunnel and seem to be surrounded by armies of mice and shrews. I have had the same experience and now only start legumes off in pots inside. This only works if you only need so only do small numbers.
