Timmy's Garden - February

Timothy O'Neill from Felinwynt near Cardigan reveals all in the secret diary of a vegetable gardener.

The celeriac crop

7th February

Planted out shallots, one row of Red Sun (13 no.) and one row of Golden Gourmet (12 no.) will have to try and get another to fill the row.

8th February

Dug the rest of the Celeriac. Finished the digging of the potato bed, hope to plant them next weekend if the weather stays as good as the forecast.

14th February

Planted second early potatoes - 6 rows plus 4 of Jersey Royals and three rows plus 2 of Edzell Blues. Planted at 15" intervals and 18" between the rows (6 pots per row). Start looking to start lifting them about 1st June.

22nd February

Sown 8 cells of Garden Pearl, 4 cells of Golden Sunrise and three cells of Cream Sausage tomatoes, as there were only six seeds of the Cream Sausage they had two seeds per cell, put them in the propagator.

Also sown eight cells of Golden Acre/Primo cabbage and twelve cells of Andes cauliflower, they have been put in the porch. The temperature is just falling below 0 at the moment, have not covered the potatoes up in the polytunnel as I have not got enough fleece to cover them all. They are just about breaking cover which is well ahead of last year.

Snow on the hills

29th February

Snow and frost this past week, it dropped to -3 last night in the tunnel. Have covered up the potatoes which are nearly all through with the fleece which I have cut in half to make it fit the length of the bed. Some of the potatoes are showing frost damage to the leaves.

Runner beansThe runner beans in the bedroom are doing very well and hopefully I will get them planted next weekend if the weather has picked up. The salads planted in early January are looking very spindly, have had a total failure of the Bijou lettuce and the American Cress. It will be interesting to see if the seedlings pick up if and when they are planted out.
