2nd Oct
Planted out what I think are Pak Choi, Mizuma but the third species could either be mustard or spinach. Last year as we did not know what to expect we did not start using the crop early enough, so hope to do better and use the leaves more efficiently. Also planted out seeds of the Chinese Radish mix. Dusted the bed with derris and covered them with fleece as last year we suffered badly with flea beetle.
3rd Oct
Planted out the Rocket into a pot as the two beds put aside for green leaves are full, I will see if we loose any of the greens and use the Pak Choi (Ivory) to fill any gaps which appear.
9th Oct
Dug the main crop potatoes from Rhos y Grug - 30 lbs Picasso, 27.5 lbs Desiree and 30 lbs Sante. The Sante probably produced the best sample, the Desiree suffered the most from blight and the Picasso suffered from slug damage as well as what I think is eelworm damage.
10th Oct
Dug over two thirds of the bed. I hope to put the garlic, shallots and onions in next year. I am still waiting for the garlic Vitesse to arrive from Marshalls. I have kept back two bulbs from this years crop to plant as well.

16th Oct
Harvested the "Crown Prince" pumpkins, only had the three of medium size. Planted out the Pak Choi in the garden where I planted out the last of the brassicas from which there were quite a lot of failures due to both caterpillars and slugs.
17th Oct
Cleared three beds and dug in some compost from the compost bin ready for planting out new potatoes after Christmas.
Pulled up the french beans, which have done very well and cropped over a long period of time.
30th Oct

Planted a bed of carrots (Primo) in the polytunnel, this variety is said to grow through the winter and be ready to pull in May next year. Last year we planted carrot variety Early Nantes on the 5/10/03 which cropped very well. We are three weeks later than last year with the carrots.
31st Oct
Planted out four rows of garlic (Vitesse), four bulbs bought from Marshalls and two retained from this year's harvest. The first row and the first three in the second row and two in the fourth row with the retained garlic.

Sown twenty cells of Mayflower (Cauliflower) into cells. Finished fitting out the potting shed and moved most of our collection of garden tools, pots etc. in. It looks very tidy at the moment.

Like Fredie in John o Groats, we found all our pumpkins (F1 Becky) rotted at golf ball size in late summer. The plants were healthy, but no crop. We were growing in a polytunnel and thought humidity might be the problem. Any thoughts?

How come your pumpkins are so successful? Mine tend to rot around August when I want them for Halloween.
