I moved to the hills near Builth Wells - 16 months ago. We have a really stony soil and had to rotavate to get any depth. We are told the soil is acidic. We are beginning a herbaceous border. We want some flowering shrubs that will do well in the westerly winds and in this soil to build up a skeleton in the border - any recommendations?

My lettuce seems to have now stopped producing leaves after a good few months of cutting. It's started growing verically with flowers at the end. This is my first year of growing crops, do you have any advice on what I'm suppsed to do at this stage? It says it's a cut and come again variety but I'm not sure what do next?

Being newbies here in Ceredigion we are interesting in hearing from others about which veggies grow well and which to avoid. Also anyone with any experience with apples, pears, etc. Also, how about roses? We have a large garden, good soil but quite exposed.

The "Friends" committee and staff are currently raising funds, which are enabling us to provide a safe enclosed Garden area for our clients to enjoy. The work is due to begin on 5th September 2005. This is quite a large project and gardening, is new to many of us. We would be grateful for any advice or suggestions.

After years of working in level gardens, I'm taking on the ultimate challenge: a high bank so steep I can weed standing up. Most books (including those I've written) falsely assume gardens are level, but banks obviously need different techniques.
I want to leave it in tact rather than build terraces. Can other mid-Welsh gardeners with steep sites (must be lots!) suggest plants to stabilise soil, please, and any tips, apart from buying climbing gear and a ladder, for tending extreme slopes?
Cheers.
