WFSA Ladies Team

Pam Worral, Helen Pearce and Lair Owen from the 2006 Welsh Ladies Sea Angling Team

Last updated: 03 January 2007

In June 2005, Helen Pearce from Aberystwyth wrote an article for us about her search for a Welsh international team of sea anglers. She's since put together a top team and sent us this update in February 2006.

"Finally after two tough competition sessions, I am pleased to announce the Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers Ladies Team Wales for 2006:-

  • Team Manager & Member - Helen Pearce, Aberystwyth
  • Team Captain - Tina Lustig, Stackpole, Pembroke
  • Team Member - Pam Worrall, Aberystwyth T
  • eam Member - Mair Owen, Aberystwyth
  • Team Member - Diane Jones, St Asaph
  • Team Reserve - Sue Williamson, Flintshire
  • Team Reserve - Sian Owen-Williams, Aberystwyth

Home Internationals

The Home Internationals are a high profile competition between England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales. The competition for male anglers and juniors is well established. I was hoping that this year would be the first year that the respective Ladies Teams would also compete. Sadly I am still waiting for confirmation that the Ladies Teams will compete. If this event does not take place for ladies this year then I will be keen to urge the WFSA to pursue the issue for 2007.

World Internationals

The World International Championships will take place in Portugal this September. The Welsh Ladies Team will be competing with teams from all over the world. This level of competition will be new to most of the team members and I am sure this will be a steep learning curve for the team.

We do have one experienced team member in Tina Lustig. Tina has represented Wales on numerous occasions and the team will find her knowledge and experience invaluable. Tina will be our Team Captain this year.

Fundraising

I am holding a series of competitions which are open to everyone in order to raise money for the team. I expect that most people believe that the teams selected to represent Wales are inundated with offers of sponsorship and funding. In reality we receive only a small grant from the Sports Council which covers about one sixth of the total costs.

It is up to me as Team Manager to raise cash and gain sponsorship for the team; this is something I am really struggling with. I would welcome any company who would be interested in sponsorship to contact me.

2007 Team

We are now commencing the qualifier sessions for the 2007 team. If there are any ladies out there who would like to compete then please contact me at helen.pearce@btconnect.com.
