Clifford Redpath Brown sent us this query:
"Have discovered that my great grandfather must have been born here about 1830 but spent most of his married life in West Bromwich. What a culture shock it must have been. Evan Roberts would have been a young Wheelwright in the 1851 census. Has anybody got access? Think his family would have attended the Congregational Church. Will visit one day"
Stan did some research and sent this reply:
"The information wanted by Clifford Redpath Brown re the 1851 census is as follows:-
Living at Penygraig, Meifod
David Roberts (55), agri.labourer, born Llansantffraidd
Anne Roberts (51), his wife, born Meifod
Evan Roberts (21), son, born Meifod
Edward Roberts (15), son, ""
John Roberts (12), son, ""
Jesse Roberts (7), son, ""
William Roberts (2), son, ""
Edward Ellis (82), father-in-law, retired wheelwright, born Llanuwchllyn (Merioneth)
plus 1 servant
By the time of the 1861 census, Evan, Edward & Jesse have left home and remaining at Penygraig are:-
David Roberts (69)
Anne Roberts (62)
John Roberts (21)
William Roberts (12)
plus 1 servant
I do not have personal access to the 1871 census. The 1881 census is of course available free on the Family Search Internet site. The only entries I could find for sure were:-
Living at Village, Meifod
Anne Roberts (83), widow
with 1 boarder.
Living at 8 Musgrave Rd, Birmingham, Warwick
Jesse Roberts (38), wheelwright, born Meifod (although it says Nuford, Montg.)
Ruth Roberts (39), his wife, born ""+ 4 children
I was unable to find the others, particularly Evan, who may well have moved to the Midlands along with brother Jesse, but may have died before 1881."

Can anyone tell me which newspapers would have covered the Meifod area in the last century and where I would be able to look at them on microfiche? My great grandfather was Evan Evans, a Saddler in Meifod and my grandfather, William Evans was born there in 1893. I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Any help please on the Richardson family who lived at Elm Villa in Meifod until the last family member (that I know of) Agnes Jessie Richardson died on 27.5.1960 aged 81. She was the daughter of George and Janet (McKay) who were both born in Scotland in 1838 according to 1881 census. There is a family grave in St Mary and St Tysilio cemetery and I wonder is great-grandfather George moved south to work on the estate of Coed y Maen. I can find no trace of a wedding so far, but they also had children: Andrew, George (Dodd), William and Alice Elizabeth who married Josep! h Wheeler Smith in 1905.Looking forward to hearing from someone in Meifod - a beautiful village 30+ years ago.

This may be useful to Ruth Reid's query.I have a very sketchy history of my father's family (Roderick Roberts) deceased 1969 at the age of 51 years in Sudbury. He tells us his family came from Wales (coal miners)and his father's name was "Jack" John Roberts who moves around the turn of the century to Cape Breton."Jack" Roberts married Mary Ann MacMullen (I suspect he married in Canada) . I don't know if he was fluent but my father spoke some Gaelic. They must have died quite young because my father spoke of being on his own at a very young age.My father's sibling's%2! 0names were Angus, William, Archina, Eulalia,Emma. My Dad and mom moved to Ontario with us 6 children in 1956 when the coal industry fell apart. I have always wanted to trace my father's family history but can't seem to get very far because if the scant info.

Try the Montgomeryshire Geonalogy Society based in Newtown, they can help. They have published many of the baptism, marrage and burial records, both the Church in Wales and the Non-conformists.

Please do go and see Meifod, it is a very beatiful part of the country - not that I'm biased

I am researching the Lollard leader Sir John Oldcastle, Lord Cobham, who escaped from the Tower of London and headed for Wales. Some say he was captured at Olchon Court, Olchon near Hay on Wye. Others say it was at Chapel Farm, Meifod in the deerfold forest. Any local help would be wonderful.
