"Powys County Council has secured external funding to offer free access to Ancestry.co.uk. The subscription website normally charges new users around £80 per year to use. But people will be able access the site for free until March 2008 at any of the council's libraries, or at the archives office in Llandrindod Wells.
Ancestry.co.uk hosts over 275million searchable records which offer information about people living in the UK, going back to the 1500s.
This includes two of the main sources people use when tracing their family tree: records of civil registrations of birth, deaths and marriages; and the census returns for England and Wales.
Local historians will also find the census returns from 1841 particularly useful for tracing the history of houses, streets or village/towns.
We are delighted to offer this free access. There is a tremendous interest in family and local history in Powys. A resource like this compliments both the local studies and archive collections held within our libraries and archives.
To access this service visit your local library, or phone Powys Archives on 01597 626088."

I am trying to find information on my grandfather Evan William Bevan. He was born C1881 and died C1952. He lived in Water Street, Llanelly, and worked for the Gas Board. It's his father's family I am interested in. I believe his mother's name was Jane Bevan and she married a man called Phillips (not Evan's father).

I am tracing my sons lineage back to Humphrey Weaver in Prestigne, Radnorshire, Wales. His father was supposedly Ievan ap Madoc ap Hywell. The Weaver genealogist says the surname Wever was taken from Ievans marriage to a woman named Weaver. Does anyone know who his father Madoc Was and why his son would have changed his name. The time period for Ievan was 1252. His grandson Walter married Joan De Bohun in 1340 so it would have involvement with the De Bohun, De Broase line.

I am searching for information on my great-great grandfather, Reese Davis, who came to Pennsylvania in the early to mid 1830's, apparently from Llangattock, Brecon. His birthdate may have been June 20, 1805. His wife was Mary, born March 25, 1807. They were married in Llangattock at St. Catwg Church on Aug. 8, 1830 Her parents were probably Morgan and Sarah Jenkins Williams, married Nov. 20, 1803 in the same church. Reese's parents may have been Edward(born abt. 1765) & Mary(born abt. 1769) Watkin Davis, married Dec. 15, 1790. All of the above were apparently born in Llangattock except Morgan Williams, who was born in Llangynidr about 1778. Reese and Mary Davis had two children in Wales, son Reese in 1831 and daughter Margarett in 1833. I believe the brother of Reese (the father), named Thomas, born in 1820, came with them. I would appreciated any information or confirmation of these facts. Thank you.

This is a tremendous offer to access Ancestry.com freely. It is a great family history site with millions of records. I have just taken advantage of their 3 day free trial and I found lots of information relating to my maternal gt.gt.grandparents. The subscription is quite high to use the site even though it gives good results so this really is a bonus to be able to access it for free ......thank you Powys.
