Hurley's History Tour

Last updated: 24 November 2005

This selection of old photos of Crickhowell was put together by Phil Harrison from the Crickhowell and District History Society. The images were used to illustrate a talk on 85 years of change in the town given by local historian Louis Hurley in 2001.

I think I've just traced my husband's Great grandfather to Crickhowell and read with interest the comment from Roy about it being a "hotbed" of Prossers. My particular Prosser is William Prosser who married Sarah Jane Haynes in 1906. I need to order the original documents but I'm pretty sure it's him. His son Fred moved to Gloucester where he lived and died. If anyone else is following this particular line of Prossers I'd love to hear from you. I live abroad so all my research in online. Thanks so much.

There is an excellent book entitled "Wales in America, Scranton and the Welsh 1860-1920" by William D. Jones that describes how many Welsh families came to America and settled in the Scranton, PA region to work in the coal mines. It includes charts of Welsh populations throughout the U.S. For anyone with Welsh ancestory who arrived during those years or who settled in the eastern U.S., this book is very insightful.

We recently visited Crickhowell. We are particularly interested in Bridge Street as this is where we have traced my husband's family back to in the 1941 - 1981 census. The family were the Williams and Davies who was noted as a carpenter. Does anyone have any more info?

For Anne Curtis
Hi, AnneMy family were at the Albion Inn in 1891 - Census records list the address as 10 Vicarage Street, Yeovil. Vicarage Street was demolished in 1983 and replaced with the Quedam Shopping Centre. I think about all that remains is Vicarage Street Methodist Chapel.

Could you help please? I recently stayed at Ty Gwyn Bed and Breakfast in the centre of Crickhowell. The house certainly looked old, I guess circa early 18th. century. I noticed a stream or 'mill race' running under the house and a small overhang roof and rooms on the eastern side. Was this house once a mill? Have you a history of the house. I am fascinated by it. Thankyou.

I am trying to trace my family history and have found that my grandfather lived in a pub called The Butchers Arms,99 Bridge Street,Crickhowell. This was from the 1901 census.Does anyone have any local knowledge of this pub as there appears to be only The Bridge End Inn there now. Was this pub the "old" Butchers Arms. Any info would be very gratful.

I'm writing a book about swimming around the UK and would love to find out more about swimming around Crickhowell Bridge and Glasbury Bridge which I visited in the summer - I had heard they were still well used swimming spots. But where and when where the swimming gymkhana's held and what did they consist of?

Elaine Weaver
My father in law, Robert George Weaver, was born in Crickhowell on 07.01.1921. His father, George Henry Weaver, was buried in the churchyard in October 1921, aged just 28, following pneumonia. The inscription on the granite cross is still clearly readable. He owned?/worked in a garage in Standard Street,Crickhowell but it closed after his death, as did the bicycle shop 'Weaver and Son' in the High street "by the fountain" . George's widow remarried a local farmer. The dates associated with the school photo loosely coinicide so I wonder if anyone remembers the shop and or garage and whether they are located in any of the fascinating photos on this site.

I can remember my father telling me that when he was a child aged about 12 yrs (1938) he would go down by the river bridge to see the Soldiers of the Indian Army camped by the river/canal. He told me this was were he got his liking for spicy food. They lived in a property called "Tygwyn", prior to that they ran the Albion Inn.
