Basketball Titan

Guy Evans

Last updated: 26 February 2008

Guy Evans from Newtown was appointed the coach of The Worcester Wolves basketball club for the 2007-2008 season. At 20 years old this made him the youngest coach in the National League by more than 10 years. In February 2008 he told us more about his meteoric rise in the sport:

Previously I have written for the BBC Mid Wales site, regarding the origin of the Newtown Titans basketball club and some of my achievements both playing and coaching the game recently.

In the two years since that piece was published, I have remained heavily involved in the game of basketball and have outlined my continued experiences in this article.

In 2005-2006, I underwent my first year as part of the basketball academy at the University of Worcester, while also being involved with the Wales U19 squad as vice-captain and further developing the basketball scene back home in Newtown.

The following season, 2006-2007, would bring even more success as I made the University 1st team and was part of the British Universities' (BUSA) championship winning side.

We defeated London Metropolition University in the final to become crowned as the best university basketball team in the country. At the same time I also played for the Worcester Wolves' national league team in the EBL and continued my work with the Newtown Titans basketball club to increase participation in the game back home.

Following the 2006-2007 season, I began training with the Newtown Senior team (for which I was captain and coach) for the Newtown-Les Herbiers-Liebertwolkwitz Olympiad which took place in May of 2007.

I spent the rest of the summer training and conducting coaching sessions and camps all throughout Mid Wales.

By August I estimate that around 200 young players had taken part in these activities, many of them experiencing their first taste of basketball.

In October I traveled with the University team to the World inter-university games in Vienna, and despite picking up an injury around this time that would see me miss a significant chunk of the season, I quickly received some good news.

The Worcester Wolves basketball club decided to appoint myself as the player-coach of their EBL team for the 2007-2008 season.

At 20 years old, I was the youngest coach in the National League by over 10 years.

Thus far I have lead the team through an up-and-down league campaign but a thrilling cup run which saw us make it all the way to the National Shield final in Manchester last week.

In doing so I became the youngest person to coach in this competition's final. At Worcester I am also presently Head Coach of the Senior Women's team, co-coach of the University ladies side, and assistant on the Men's university 1st team until I return as a player.

The basketball season is now coming to a close and I have started the final semester of my degree. I intend on staying in Worcester next year to complete a Master's degree in Coaching as well as continue playing full-force and hopefully maintaining my many coaching roles.

This summer will also be primarily focused on conducting basketball sessions around Mid Wales and trying to spread the word and visit places that haven't had the chance for an organised session before.

Those who would like more information about the club, myself, or would like to book a coaching session, can log on to the Newtown Titans website."
