Talk of the Town

Cardigan Town Bridge

Last updated: 24 November 2005

Originally from Cardigan, Matthew Morgan says he had to leave his hometown to find work in Cardiff. Do you think there's a shortage of job opportunities? Have you had to move away? Join the debate and have your say.

Matthew Morgan from Cardigan:

"I was born and bred in Cardigan and would move back there tomorrow given half the chance. I was forced to move away by the lack of job opportunities in the area, and I know I am not alone in this. Bring back some opportunities for the area and let Cardigan be home to Cardis once more."

Do you agree with Matthew? Have you been forced to move away due to a lack of employment in the area? Or do you think there are plenty of opportunities for young people to stay in their communities if they want to do so? Join the debate and have your say.

Well, I have to say that there are few job offers in Cardigan. Many of my young friends have gone off to find work in larger Welsh towns and cities. Some have gone further and it's a shame as they didn't really want to go. I'm leaving but not because of work. We had a successful business started from nothing, a pig, poultry and welsh black beef farm and farm shop. Our meat won the True Taste award it was that good. Then the council came along and told us to take all of our signs down and business slowly tepered out. Folk didn't see the signs so assumed we were no longer open. We did ask the council, and they told us what size the signs had to be before we had them made. Now we are leaving for France but not to sell meat again. It was a wonderful experience living here and I'm sorry to be leaving.

I have lived in Cardigan all my life. I was born in a guest house my dad had just built.I lived there from 1987 up till 1997.I now spend most of the time in Spain but I will always return to Cardigan in the winter. I don't know why I come back to Cardigan there's just something special about it...

I think Cardigan is fab, I come here whenever I can specially for the pasties, can't beat a good hot Welsh one! The people are so friendly and generous, a night out in the local pub beats any high profile club, got to visit Gabs each time and shake my booty!

I agree with Rhian. Ceredigion has the highest number of self-employed people - artists and entrpreneurs - of any county in Britain. The County Council is in danger of ruining the good things we have by trying to attract businesses. As Karl says, many will want to be based where there are lots of people. Building more roads, putting hideous lighting along them only cuts down our view of the stars at night. It will not attract businesses. We should preserve our natural environment and support people with the initiative to start as a one person operation; give publicity, cheap rents, parking%2! 0concessions, lower Council tax, not more/bigger roads.

I think to say there are no opportunities in Cardigan would be a terrible mistake. Don't we create our own opportunities? I know plenty of people in Cardigan who have started their own businesses from scratch and are doing amazingly well. The only problem here is that many people just 'expect' jobs don't fall into your lap, you have to use your head. A fine example of this is Ultima Cleaning, it started with one man and a van, now they have vw high-top vans, cage siders and smaller vans and cover a wide range of duties. The opportunities are there you just have to use your head.

I would not consider returning to the area, until I decide to retire. I don't think you can beat the beautiful unspoilt countryside, and beaches offered around the area, and this will be of great appeal when I have the time to enjoy it. However speaking as a business owner I would not entertain the idea of trying to run a successful business so far away from the majority of my potential customers. I would think this is the case in many industries and sadly reflects in the job opportunities around the area.
