Do not let subway come to town there are enough eateries already independantly run these places are the peoples livelyhoods , a chain of eateries like subway etc is not needed !! it will ruin the towns individual feel which is why its so popular with the tourists as its untouched by these chain giants !

We lived in Verwig and Tremain late 50s' early 60s being based with the RAF at Aberporth. Attended Verwig, Aberporth and Penparc primaries and Cardigan Grammar. I found the life in and around Cardigan healthy and culturally rewarding. I was lucky to experience the real unspoilt Welsh way of life.

I've lived in Cardigan all my life and will always consider it home but I think there's not enough to do there. And as for the shops, there's not enough places to get what you need. Since Woolworths has closed down you need to travel to Carmarthen to get a lot of stuff. I know they're planning on giving Cardigan a 'makeover' but I think they're focusing on the wrong things. I heard Morrisons is planning on coming here. What's the point in that? We've already got a Tesco, Somerfield, Aldi and Spar! It's just a small town, we don't need five supermarkets! I think they need to focus on the shops that we need. I think Cardigan needs more Woolworths type shops and more places to do things. You only really have Theatr Mwldan, the swimming pool and...what else? They need more stuff for children of all ages. Teifimania is great for younger kids but what about teenagers? People complain about them all the time, but maybe if they had something to do people wouldn't have much to complain about.

My family and I moved to Y Ferwig just outside Cardigan in June 2004 and we just love it here. We have always found everyone to be very friendly, particularly if you're willing to put yourselves out and get involved in local events. And it's such a lovely place to live with so many areas to visit and explore. I do think however, that youngsters in the early to mid-teens age group need more to do and a place to meet in Cardigan - perhaps a bowling alley would be a good idea? I know of a couple of other towns where bowling alleys have been built and they have been a great%! 20success with teenagers and families alike. We certainly wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

Cardigan is a great place to live if you're retired or just don't fancy working. But if you want to make a living it's not easy. Jobs are usually short term or part time, and minimum wage is standard. I earn my living supplying products to England, and don't consider West Wales a viable market at all. Most of my friends have left the area. It's a shame because I like the place and don't intend to leave, but sometimes it feels like a third world country.

Cardigan is the best place in the world to live, I went to Morgans school and then onto the St Mary's Secondary Modern School who's headmaster was Mr Peregrine, nickname Pello. We didn't get bored as children in those days you could always find things to do, with no telly or video games, and perish the thought of a bus to poppit we used to walk to poppit and patch or gwbert, taking our jam sarnies and bottles of water if we couldnt afford a bottle of 'corona'.

I was born and bred in Cardigan and left there in 1972. On a weekend visit in 2005 to celebrate my 50th birthday. I was standing on the old bridge looking down stream and something caught my eye when I looked down at the water I saw something dive below the surface, so I waited for it to surface, and what did I see? It was an otter the first I have seen in the wild. Are they common on the river now? I hope so.

I was brought up in Llechryd, and I have lived in the States for about 14 yrs now. I long to come home. I show this site to my co-workers and friends and they can't believe that I chose to come to the States and leave such a beautiful place. You rarely realise what you have until it's gone. I love Cardigan and it's surrounding area and hope to one day return home.

So many people i know on here have more or less written what i would have:)sat in bored tonight and was thinking of home!so here i am leaving a comment cardigan has moulded me into who i am today and with out it i wouldnt be as grounded as i am! its a place where u can grow into who you want to be figure that 1 out and ur half way there realise that and then move away for a bit...go back....move away again....then go back the spring effect is right, there is definitley summit about the place that keeps making u go back but for me its my mum and my friends and plus the beautiful surroundings the beaches the woods and mayb a party or two!!

I came to Cardigan on holiday sept 07, went to the New Life church, and was overwhelmed by the friendship and sincere caring I received, true Christians. I will definately be returning, and I am really looking forward to meeting my friends again. This place of worship should be on this website, as a place where God truly is. If there is anyone out there looking for a true church, it is there, especially in these hard times.

I have lived near cardigan my whole life. I find that the people here are mostly bullies, attacking other peoples good name at every chance with great zeal. People will know what you eat for breakfast here coz they really are that nosy. All in all cardigan is not very pleasent nice place to live.

Cara Jenkins - West Woodyates, Dorset
I was born and bred in Cardigan and retain very strong Welsh roots if not an accent from mixing with county folk. I have travelled and I do not know if there is nowhere like Cardigan or nowhere like home. I disagree with the nothing for teenagers because wherever you are they are usually into the same sort of things however much is provided for their distraction. Cardigan, in my opinion, is a safe place for younger people to 'try' out their identity and pastimes without getting into too much trouble. We now live fairly rurally in Dorset but return to see my parents as often as we can. My children (4 aged 5 to 16) love the safeness of the streets, beaches and countryside. They love to walk into town (from Rhos) and spend their money in Lewis chem's pound shop and Yum Yum the sweet shop. I relive my happy youth through them. As for the Prince Charles quay it remains to be seen but I was proud and moved by the purchase and investment into Cardigan Castle (TV's Restoration programme)and the fantastic job on the buildings surrounding it. I long for the coastline often.

Have you tried walking to Parc Teifi Business Park? You take your life in your hands trying to cross the bypass. Ceredigion Council in it's infinite wisdom decided not to provide any sort of crossing for Cardigan's busiest road, in any other town there would be a bridge or a subway but not in good old Cardigan. When I were a lad you could walk from Llangoedmor to Cardigan in relative safety, now you have to keep your wits about you and be prepared to jump in the hedge. Looks like I'll have to drive everywhere, no wonder people don't walk anymore!

I'm currently trying to put together a documentary film about people and their stories about Cardigan, or just their opinion on it. I have enjoyed reading the comments here and the issues raised are exactly the type of things I want to include. Cardigan is going to be 900 years old soon so this film is going to be a social document of sorts. It is an independent film (sorry for using a bbc page to plug it) and I'd love to interview anyone who likes to read through this page from time to time and who has memories or opinions.

Please send in a comment and I'll pass on my email address to those interested.

I will always remember my first day in Cardigan 1959 I came there with my mother and father from Yorkshire to my grans and granddads house in Greenfield row. We arrived by steam train it was heaven after being in Yorkshire to see the entire town and go to the beach there in poppet. My grandfather Edwards was known to all there and mostly the lion where he would spend his time but from their house the view was absolutely fantastic I will never forget Cardigan and the relatives I still have living in or around Cardigan .

Born in Cardigan now living in Luton. Having spent most of my life in Cardigan, you can't really knock the place, is quite, safe and a really nice place to grow up. There are a couple of downsides though, there is very little to do and for those that have a job the hourly pay rate is terrible, in short, great place to grow up and retire, but when you get to 20 move to a city and dont come back until you're 60.

Cardigan is my ancestral home. My mother (Dorothy Jones) was born there and married my father there during the war. I have many family members who live in town and I have visited Cardigan only once. It was wonderful. Lots of history and delightful people. I'll be back!

I live in Boncath 5 miles from Cardigan and I'll be moving to France, 24.12.07 yeah I know, on Christmas eve with three little kiddies and a dog...don't worry I'm going to write a message on the roof of the car for Santieclaus lol!! Anyway, I love Cardigan and am sorely going to miss this magical place. I've met so many Cardiginians and they made me feel so welcome. I worked in Woolworth's and got to know many folk here, young and old alike. I was brought up in the army and we moved every 18 months, I've lived in plenty of towns around the UK and Europe. Cardigan is my favourite (apart from Berlin) because it doesn't look like Anytown. So long as this town doesn't get a Starbucks, McDonald's etc, it will always remain one of my favourite places in Europe! I shall miss it. But, you know, when an opportunity comes along, one has to take it...living in a nice house in the Alps being that opportunity!

I lived in Cardigan in the 60's and went to school there, a great place to live and made some good friends there. There was a Youth Club upstairs in the town hall and ATC in Aberporth, a week off school to go and pick spuds and worked in the market selling Fruit & Veg for Mapstone.I read these comments about nothing to do there !!Make your own fun and enjoy life, you can always travel !

I was born in cardigan in 1955 left in 1972. I agree Cardigan was a great place to grow up and still is, but nothing seems to change for the young people. There is not a lot to do if you are in your early teens unless its summer when you spend some of your time down patch or Gwbert. So come on Cardigan town council give the kids a break and spend some of the money the town makes from tourists on facilities for the kids. Unlike me they may stay in Cardigan when they become adults. I am now 52 years old living in a village called Tynant 12 miles north of cardiff and I still regard Cardigan as my home. Viva Cardigan i still love it!!

Is there anywhere in Cardigan or surrounding that shows live premiership games?
Thu Nov 1 15:16:47 2007

Cardigan is a dive. It is ok making it look nice, and have a focus diy store, but that isn't going to sustain the population for long. The young people need somewhere to go and something to do, urgently, and it is ok all these politicians sitting around with the older generation and deliberating over the towns future... but what happens in 20 years time? when all the old folks of today are gone?surely cardigan would benefit from some boost in the economy, should we not be looking to get the youngsters to stay and train and get jobs here? if not, the only thing cardigan will end up as is a retirement home.

I agree with Hannah. Cardigan is a nice safe place to bring up your children but there is hardly anything here for teenagers. Other than that Cardigan has been the best place to live in.

We used to live in St Dogs and loved it! My husband asked me to marry him on Poppit beach and we got married there too. We love Cardigan and are moving back in Dec to live. It feels like home and i can't wait to bring my daughter up there, she'll really enjoy the beautiful beaches and walks. And as for the shops, try living in the flatlands of lincolnshire, cardigan is the mecca of shopping compared to here! 64 days and counting till we move!

Just been reading about Roman castles in Wales. There are Roman castles at Carmarthen, Cardiff, Caerwent, Caersws, Caerphilly,Caernavon, Caerleon, Caerhun, Caerau, Caer Gybi, Caer Gai, Cae Gaer. Anyone know if there is a Roman castle in Cardigan? The name suggests one should be there somewhere!

Roger Dowding, Leominster.
Mywife and I relocated from W. Mids toCardigan in the early 90's.On starting upour own 'one man' taxi operation we were alittle apprehensive of our acceptance intothe community, having been warned of thesupposed legendary insularity of 'Cardies'.Happily we were to find that this slur ona fine community was almost totallyunfounded, based only on their reluctanceto suffer fools gladly and freeloaders notat all! If you try to integrate and makea contribution, as we did,you will make friends. Although we had to leave Walesafter about 10 yrs due to family illness we are always greeted like old friends whenever we return (sadly now not as oftenas we would wish.)With regard to the young people complaining of the lack of opportunitiesand amenities, I would suggest that if you havean idea or dream which you think could beviable smarten youself up, listyour ideas and ask a local businessman for advice. It is my experience that there are people in the town who care enough about it tohelp its people and through them itsadvancement.

I think that Cardigan is rubbish! I am 23 now and have lived here all my life but I would just like to point out that the only reason I havent moved from here is because I got married and now have children. All I can say to all you 14 and 15 yr olds is get out as soon as you can or you will be stuck here forever.

My wife was born in Cardigan hospital and left shortly afterwards as her father was in the RAF. She had distant memories of childhood that was centered around her grandmothers shop in the High Street. We now regularly visit Cardigan and are always treated with kindness by almost everyone we meet. It seems there is a tight but friendly community of people who are more than willing to open up to visitors. Our favourite time is the food festival, in my opinion probably one of the most natural and well presented food festivals in the country.
Thu Jul 5 09:54:55 2007

Sandra Kozian from Sutton Coldfield
We have been holidaying in the area for the past 20 years and, at last, are buying a house just outside Cardigan to come and live permanently now that our sons are grown and have left home. We would have come sooner but felt that there were little prospects for our boys on the job front. I know that if there were more jobs available that paid a liveable wage both of them would come to live near to us like a shot! It worries me that many local people must find themselves in the position of having to move away from their families, home towns and villages to find work. That is very sad, I would hate to have to leave such a wonderful part of the world and can only say that we are so very looking forward to living there. It should only be a few weeks now before everything goes through so keep your fingers crossed for us!!
Tue Jun 26 17:01:43 2007

Danny, Cardigan
I moved from London in December but was a visitor for ages before, so here is my view. Cardigan is unique. Don't let it change by building a new shopping centre, you really don't need it. Younguns. Stuck for something to do? Join the cubs or scouts, yfc, army, air or sea cadets. You could be doing something most weekends, if you really wanted to. If you are bored, it's because you are boring. Lack of jobs? The Poles seem to like it here. (And us Saes). Not everyone can be a high earning city analyst or IT expert. So all you Cardi, stop moaning that there's nothing to do, nowhere to shop and no jobs and get on with life. Cardigan is a little gem and I love it.

Charlie Sharp is like Noel Edmonds -Always thinkin positively! Good on you Charlie! Cardigan is full of potential, but I think it does lack places to go for the "youngsters". I think the fact that Cardigan only has one "Club" is great because you know your garanteed to see everyone there! Theatre Mwldan is great now it has been done up, but we still seem to be behind with the new releases! Take Borat for example. It was being sold in tesco on DVD when it was still being shown in Mwlds! shockin! The market is great too because it has some stalls that are so unique, like Daves Beauty products Stall that now sells clothes (well, thats what I have been told anyway!) Thats great Dave, you keep at it boi! Anyways, overall Cardigan ain't that bad, just lackin in things for the youngens to do!

The new Prince Charles Quay looks like it came from Swansea, so it should go back! An urban design for an urban area designed by urban planners. The otter should be part of the quay not sentenced to solitary confinement near the end of the pavement. Cardigan has improved but still has some way to go.

Cardigan born and bred, I now visit my family twice a year. I love coming home to the clean air of the west coast. Me and my family tend to stay in New Quay but always spend most of our time in and around Cardigan. Like so many others, I too had to move away from my roots because there are no jobs. I hope to return one day to this beautifull part of Wales.

I now live in Somerset but my wife and I always look forward to our visits home. We love the countryside and the beaches as do my four springer spaniels. Until recently we have only been able to come down in the summer when we bring our caravan with us. Recently we have been staying at the beautiful cottages at Canllefaes Penparc. This means we are able to come down in the winter time as well.Great area and great people. To build on the tourist thing Cardigan and the area should consider going organic in all things.

Rix from Newcastle Emlyn
Cardigan has to be one of the most boring places on earth - next to Newcastle Emlyn. It's no wonder that all of my mates are now in Cardiff. Cardigan and surrounding areas need development before all the young people with any real talent have all left. Let's face it if there are no jobs for highly skilled individuals then they will all simply relocate. Then what are you left with? Put simply, the unemployed and semi skilled population. Summary, beautiful area with lots of scenery and no prospects.

Fran from Cardigan(now Worcestershire).
Like many people that attended Cardigan School in the 1970's, I had to move away for Higher. I moved to England because of a career change. I'm still here in England, and visit "home" in Cardiganshire regularly. Met loads of other "Cardies" now living and working in England - we always speak Welsh to each other - which is great. We all get really homesick, often feeling terrible "hiraeth" for the way of life we have had to leave behind. -hate to see what has happened in the world of agriculture since the late 1970's, pleased to see that Cardigan town is beginning to thrive again - keep it up! Delighted to see that the Mwldan Theatre is so successful - having been a member of Cardigan Theatre back in the mid 1970's -still have all my programs etc! I'm now working part! -time, with more opportunity to research into the family history. Hoping to visit "home" in the New Year with my family to sift through the fascinating information I have been able to obtain with the help of family members.

We the "older" generation - 50 ish - need to wake up to the fact that our youngsters are causing trouble in the town as there is nowhere or nothing for them to do on the weekends. When i was 16 - 21 and living in Cardigan there was a choice of venues to go to.We would meet up in town usually the Angel Hotel for a drink and we would all go in different groups to various dances and country and westerns or whatever took your fancy instead of being herded to either the Angel or the Ship as is what appears to be the norm nowadays. No wonder that fights occur on the weekends when our youth are concentrated in one establishment. We need to look at relaxing the draconian laws regarding holding dances and disco's and allow our youngsters to dance away their energy before returning to their homes tired but having had a good night out without causing aggrevation to householders. We have forgotten what it was like to be young.what a shame!

David Woodthorpe from Abercych (Near Cardigan)
I have lived in Abercych for ten years, and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity, I am originally from Telford, and to have the countryside outside my front door is still amazing to me after growing up with concrete and cars. I now own a Computer repair and signwriting shop in Abercych (Preseli Computing) and I get to meet far more of the local people now, and find them to be some of the most down to earth people I have ever met. Cardigan is good, but Abercych must be one of the jewels in Wales's crown

Dai Rees from Caerphilly
My Cynon grandparents used to have a caravan near Cardigan, just down the coast, staring right at the end of the Pembrokeshire National Park...the name of the village it was by is floating round in my head somewhere...I love the town, greatest town in Wales...I keep looking out for news on this shopping place, sounds dodgy to me as well. Of course Cardigan doesn't have enough shops, and there's nothing for kids to do, it's just like any other town in Wales! Caerphilly, Aberdare, Builth, Holyhead, the list goes on!! Every town has it's faults, but be glad you're living in a town that isn't as damp & depressing as some other places in Wales!

I was born here but moved with my mum when I was 6.That didn't keep me away though, I regularly visited and now I live here again. My friends and I often joke that Cardigan has a 'spring effect' it seems that everybody that leaves always comes back! I really like this town and although its nice to get away its always nicer to come home.

I have recently discovered the Cellar Bar, under the Castle Cafe, it rocks. A grown up venue for grown up people. Live music most nights - jazz, folk, soul and some great vocalists. Stop knocking Cardigan and start enjoying it.

I'm in the process of trying to relocate to the Cardigan area and I'd really like to make contact with some like-minded folk who live there already. I'm a lifelong "greeny" with what one might call esoteric leanings (I do astrology and I'm into Earth Mysteries and alternative things like homeopathy). I do hope I can be useful in some way, even though my mobility's restricted by a spinal injury. (I've just restarted my attempts at learning to speak Welsh. I'd really appreciate any ideas for making contacts. I'm a geriatric technoklutz so I'm not having much luck with websites, and my comput! er is on its last legs anyway.

I was born and bred in Cardigan! It has always been home to me, no matter where I have been! Moving back soon - can't wait! There's no where like it on earth - the people, the culture, the amazing countryside! Hope the town planners listen to the views of the people who want the character of the town to remain unique, no modern shopping mall frontages! Please! Let's have it in keeping with the rest of the town!

Cardigan (at the southern end of Cardigan Bay (Bae Ceredigion)), is a pleasant market town and a good starting point for exploring western parts of Mid-Wales. Along the bay there are many small resort towns and villages, rocky coves and sandy beaches.

Its a bit quiet for me but IT ROCKS! I have spent most of my childhood there meeting so many amazing and nice people and I wouldn't wanna be from anywhere else! Aberporth is cool too! Cardigan, not so good if you don't drink, eh? The town revolves around the pub scene, with little else to offer. With all the shops closing down and the town not allowing anything new to come in, don't you think that this lovely holiday town will soon be a ghost town? Me and my partner have to travel to Swansea, Cardiff even Bristol to do any deeent shopping. After getting married next year we plan to move where we can both start a career not just have a job. Please hurry up and change before you lose every young person from this town.

I've been visiting Cardigan since the age of 6(now 52)several times a year. There is simply nowhere else like it on the planet. Great countryside, people, some of the best beaches anywhere, the Penllwyndu Inn at Llangoedmore(visit it)and it's still pretty remote. A hidden gem. The Mwldan has got to be the best arts centre anywhere; beats the MAC in Brum by a mile. Long may it prosper.

I think cardigan is a grand place to live, the town centre is now full of restored, historic buildings which i think is just smashing and can only proprl cardigan forward. The castle is soon to be restored and i am sure it will be a big if not gigantic tourist attraction. To wrap it up, it's just fab!

My fiance originates from Cardigan, and as she still has a large family there I have been lucky enough to become a regular visitor to the town over a number of years. There are many reasons for repeated visits apart from wonderful family: fantastic scenery, welcoming people, community spirit and roads that are a pleasure to drive. If you have a mountain bike, take it with you - the countryside is some of the best I've ever ridden! Can't wait to move to Cardigan!!

Visiting family in cardigan on the weekend and heard that the proposal for a new hotel on the river front (Quay street access) has been railroaded through the council planning dept. I last heard this was declined by the Assembly govt and other departments. Is this another showing of underhanded council tactics. I have seen the plans for this disgusting looking building. It shows it's not what you know its who you know and how you go about greasing the wheels of politics. Cardigan is a lovely looking town and is getting better all the time but to let this monstrocity into the town is appauling.

Took my children to Llangranog for almost 16 years. Loved the area for its wonderful ambience and scenery. Happy days! Please don't change it too much. Wish I could afford to retire there. No chance now. London prices! So many great memories, of a place so dear to my heart. Always felt at home there! Thankyou to all of those locals who made life as it once was.

My wife and I moved here in 1996 and we've seen amazing growth since that time. I used to think Cardies sat back to wait for someone else to get things going, but I was wrong. Call a public meeting to look at anything from opportunites for local bands to conservation of listed buildings and upwards of 100 will turn out. The big tragedy I see is the under use of the town's many beautiful chapels and sunday school buildings. A recent survey found well over 1/3rd of residents contribute as volunteers to some good cause. Amazing.

Lucky enough to be in Cardigan most weekends and school holidays. A terrific place with lots of good humour, great Welsh food and a brilliant river festival. I lived in west wales for some years so I really like the place. I met some of my best friends from cardigan. Only bad point is there is not much work for the locals. I don't think they should build a shopping centre. It's nice the way it is. O do think it needs some sort of enterainment like a bowling alley.

Aberteifi is a unique town! Hope it keeps its character. Interested to see what's going to happen to the Castle. Theatr Mwldan is an amazing facility with tonnes of different stuff for all kinds of people. If you're in the area be sure to look at their up-coming events and make use of it! I also love walking along the Teifi Marshes wildlife reserve which has an excellent visitors centre. Could do with a few quality eating places in the town though! Can anyone recommend anywhere?

With the report last month (June 2005) that all towns looked the same, it is time that Cardigan pulled its finger out and did something positive. Firstly, pedestrianise from Rhian's hairdressers to Pendre chip shop. Secondly, the proposed development has to be something spectacular to attract the shoppers, if that means that it looks different then so be it!

It would not be right for Cardigan's new mall to have a space age facade. Much better to be within keeping of the local stone and rendered walls. We do not need futuristic characteristics otherwise we will ehd up looking no different to thousands of other town and city centres.

We were an RAF family stationed at Aberporth 1960-63. I Attended schools in Verwig, Penparc and finally Cardigan Grammar. I have fond memories of Cardigan especially the old market and cinema, and especially being able to learn to speak the Welsh language. We lived in Tremain and I remember a particularly hard winter, and being cut off with snow for nearly a week. But I will never forget the warmth of the local people.

Rather than kill the town centre with a shopping mall, what Cardigan needs is something for families to do on a rainy day, such as a bowling alley, which would also attract more tourists into the town. family friendly alternatives to the pubs and a good restaurant or two would also not go amiss!
    Thu Apr 14 15:13:32 2005

Cardigan would be better off were it under the jurisdiction of Pembrokeshire County Council. By being the only county not to appoint an arts development officer, Ceredigion is not providing enough support to the arts, which is a growth sector.

Aberteifi is my second home. I have the "blues" between November and February when I cannot be there. Such lovely people, scenery, beaches, wildlife, marine life, wild fruits and veg, (if you know where to pick them), and relaxing. Aberteifi is the place to be, you can live off the land and sea. We don't need supermarkets in Aberteifi. From my point of view, Aberteifi should not be developed into a modern day shopping centre, it is a market place with history. A modern day arcade would surely spoil the Town, if there is a demand for a Shopping Centre, it should be "Out Of Town". See you soon Aberteifi.

Walk around Cardigan before its too late. By the time the new centre is built Cardigan will not be Cardigan anymore. Also visit Llechryd - fantastic place - river, fishing, good pub and a shop that is a bit like 'Open All Hours'! A fantastic castle a three mile walk away, and a fantastic abbey also a three mile walk away - in the other direction. A wild life centre, and yet another three mile walk, the most fantastic wild waterfalls.

Cardigan is the beating heart of Wales and a cauldron of inspiration. It is a place where the two cultures meet and they have done through history. There is a really good interaction between English and Welsh culture shot through Cardigan’s history. The maritime history is very important connecting Cardigan to the rest of the world giving the town a cosmopolitan view. I think it’s a wonderful town but needs some better shops. Cardigan castle was termed the “lock and stay of Wales” in the 13th Century Welsh text Brut Y Tywysogion.

The thing that strikes me most about Cardigan is the amount of hidden talent in the town and the surrounding area. There is a network of creative people and new technologies have opened up opportunities. The expansion of Aberporth airfield and runway to enable access for bigger planes potentially opens things up a lot too.
