The River Teifi

Teifi Pools The film Llifo is a community project overseen by Creative Mwldan, a media centre based in Cardigan. It charts the course of the River Teifi from its source on Cors Caron to the sea at Cardigan.

"Llifo is a beautiful representation of the regeneration of Cardigan past, present and future reflected through the voices of eight local people and in dialogue between them. The River Teifi and it's musical undertow creates a backdrop for the various narratives and visual cutaways.

The makers of the film worked closely during five months of intensive filming, recording and editing to artistically represent the river's journey through the Teifi Valley. The result is an upbeat 20 minute film, reflecting the peoples' enthusiasm and loyalty to the River Teifi and the need to create a sustainable future for Cardigan town.

At first the aim was to produce a film that was achievable in five months and using a small budget that could be screened in the new auditorium at Theatr Mwldan during the Story Telling Festival 2004. Creative Mwldan Creadigidol hoped to use the film as an example of the new media centre's capabilities and to inspire the local community to be creative without having to search elsewhere or leave their home locality.

The film was directed by Steve Knight and Sean Vicary and is a montage of landscape imagery that includes stop motion animation by Sean. The narrative is spoken by Caradog Jones, retired water bailiff, Paul Welch, Skipper of the Keewaydin, Thelma Adams of Caws Cenarth, David Hieatt, Director of Howies clothing company, Dic Jones, Welsh poet, Buddug Verona James, opera singer, Angela Leaney and Simon Rees, who are both studying.

There was an underlying score of traditional Welsh music written by Ceri Rhys Matthews that is rhythmically sensitive to the dialogue and makes use of the sights and sounds of the river to enhance the film's themes. Music is performed by Llio Rhydderch playing Triple Harp, Ceri Rhys Matthews and Diarmuid Johnson playing the flute and the pipe.

The final result exceeded all expectations and 'Llifo' was praised by local audiences during the Story Telling Festival and heads of departments in local government and the Arts Council of Wales. Creative Mwldan Creadigidol will submit the film to a number of film festivals this year.

'Llifo' is a charming visual journey which ends with a spoken listing of the river's tributaries read by Caradog Jones. The names flow easily in time to the music much like rain falling in the upper reaches of the Teifi's watershed, rushing, slowing, meandering and finally merging into the ocean and thus the outside world.

Llifo is a film created by Creative Mwldan Creadigidol in Cardigan and funded by Cardiff 2005."
