Area 43 photo tour
Staff and people who use the centre have put together a website all about Area 43. Here are a few extracts:
"Cardigan has a large population of young people. The problem is that there are very few jobs in the local area, this can lead to alcohol abuse or drug abuse. Those are obviously extreme cases but unfortunately a reality. There are also fairly high teenage pregnancy levels.
Cardigan had no facilities for young people, until Area 43 was opened. Now instead of going down to the pub for a pint, you can go to Area 43 for a "cuppa" and use the other facilities and services:
Information
To provide a wide range of information for young people on issues which effect their lives including housing, employment opportunities, legal issues, welfare rights, health issues, community and social activities etc.
Advice and guidance
To offer impartial and confidential educational and vocational guidance and personal action planning. To offer advice on where to access opportunities, from employment to leisure, from training to voluntary work and to help our young people develop life strategies which meet there needs.
Counselling
The project offers a confidential counselling service run by a qualified and experienced youth counsellor. Referrals will be made to other specialist agencies where appropriate.
Advocacy
We offer an advocacy service to any young person who feels what they need representation by an independent adult.
Informal Education
Will be offered through workshops where young people can build confidence and motivation, develop their own personal expression and learn skills which might help build a bridge into a mainstream educational system that many of them feel disenchanted with.
Training
Grassroots training will be available, problem solving, negotiation skills, personal finances management, job search techniques as well as such things as household skills.
Enterprise
Our young people will be involved in running the social facilities offered by the centre, providing cost price meals, organising social events and specific projects. We will also try to provide where possible office space and administrative help to young people with business opportunities and ideas they wish to explore.
Community Action
We will encourage and promote interaction with projects that benefit the local community and help to break down the barriers which often leave young people feeling disenfranchised from their environment.
