Wyeside Arts Centre
Last updated: 30 August 2007
Take in a little theatre, wander around an art gallery or enjoy a night at the movies, courtesy of Builth's arts centre, which now has new facilities for deaf and hard of hearing, blind and visually impaired people.
Opened in 1978, the Wyeside Centre is a busy arts centre located in the middle of Builth Wells with a two-screen cinema, a gallery and a theatre.
Builth Wells is said to be the smallest town in the UK to have a cinema as well as being the longest-running permanent cinema in Wales.
To find out what's showing currently, visit our cinema listings page (use the back button if you need to return to this page).
And now deaf and hard of hearing, and blind and visually impaired people can enjoy the cinema experience with friends and family at Wyeside from September 14th with the introduction of selected subtitled and audio described screenings.
This great new service funded by the Arts Council of Wales Capital Lottery Unit means that blind or visually impaired people will have a full description of the film.
A headset is collected from the Box Office by the customer, enabling the user to hear an accurate description the film's action sequences alongside the dialogue, making the cinema experience very evocative and detailed and helping to build up a mental picture of the film.
Wyeside joins nine other arts centre/ cinema venues across Wales who have installed audio description and subtitling equipment. The project is hoped to reflect a shift of attitude and perception and help provide the best service for disabled audiences in Wales.
As well as a cinema, the Wyeside has a theatre which is used for live shows and drama.
Exhibitions by artists from the area and further afield are staged in the gallery. For details of other events at the centre visit their website or phone 01982 553668
