Spring Marathon 2007

Mountain bikers

Last updated: 16 April 2007

Mountain Bike riders from across Great Britain were set for a big night out in Builth Wells in April 2007 when the town hosted the opening event in the Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series 2007- a 40km night ride through the Mid Wales countryside. Fiona Ruth Harris of Tourism Partnership Mid Wales reveals more about the event:

"The 'Exposure Lights Big Night Out' and the 'Spring Marathon' took place on 14 - 15 April 2007 and included the option of three different rides as well as the night ride.

Builth Wells was the 'birthplace' of the marathon series and the night marathon has become the regular opening event of the series which goes on to visit locations across the UK including Penrith, Cumbria and Aviemore in Scotland.

The series returns to Builth Wells on 7 - 8 July 2007, for more events including a 25km mini marathon and a 100km full enduro.

The Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series is one of the UK's biggest endurance events, which attracts over 1000 competitors and is organised by John Lloyd Racing Events Ltd, a Mid Wales based company.

Based around a single loop mountain bike course, these marathons attract participants from the whole spectrum of mountain biking. They enjoy a weekend event which includes a 40km night ride on the Saturday and then a choice of courses on Sunday riding up to 75km through some of Mid Wales most spectacular wilderness landscapes.

Each event weekend starts on Saturday with registration, pasta party, evening entertainment and bike servicing.

The two events staged in Builth Wells are supported by Tourism Partnership Mid Wales (TPMW).

As well as encouraging visitors to the region that might not have otherwise have come, the high profile of the event serves to raise media awareness of Mid Wales as the ideal holiday destination for activity based breaks and some of the best mountain biking in the UK."

The Big Night Out in Wales was a blast, pretty tough climbs a fair few of which I walked up but the descents were a hoot. Hammering down very steep hills in warm dusty conditions where you can only see 15’ is an adrenalin rush. It was probably an advantage to only be able to see for 15’ as the full picture would have been very intimidating, as it was I carried on blissfully unawares. Although my legs wince at the thought I’m definitely going again next year and would recommend it as a good fun weekend.
