My Town

Builth Wells street

Nobody knows a town as well as the people who live there so here's your chance to tell it like it is.

Thousands of people visit the Builth area every year - many drawn by the annual Royal Welsh Show. But what's it like to live in the town all year round?

If you're a Builth local, help us build a portrait of the place in the words of its people. Just write a sentence in the box below telling us what you think. Do you love or loathe the town? What would you change? What makes it special?

Lived in builth for the last 7 years liked the look of the town when we used to pass it when driving up to shropshire 2 visit family and it's not the sleepy little town as one tv station tried 2 say in the advert for the royal welsh show back in july people are very friendly and helpful like the peace and quiet of the countryside and beautiful scenery

Builth is a great place to visit, it's when you deceide to remain there that the true nature of the place becomes apparent. A rural paradise becomes, like many small towns, an inward-gazing narow-minded prison for many. I lived in Builth from the age of 10, until I officially left after going to Uni. Non-locals are still subject to "not belonging" and the community spirit only really extends as far as those who are truly local.

Hi, I'm researching The Pugh family from Builth Wells. I believe my Grandfather, Ned Pugh, owned The Plough Hotel in Market Street. Quite a few of the Pugh's (originally farmers from Merthyr Cynog)left the town for south Wales in the early 1900s and I would love to hear from any of the family from that area. It's really difficult trying to track them down.Incidentally, my Mum was a cousin to Wendy Fostiak's Mum, Violet - How you doin' Wendy!!! I also played as a child with Hazel (nee Thomas) who left a message above and now lives in New Zealand. We had a fabulous childhood growing up in Builth, as did my kids.

I am Looking for Lord's Hill Baptist Chapel, Builth Wells. My Great Grandfather William Lewis Jones was a Baptist minister at Lord's Hill Baptist Chapel during the mid 1800's. His first wife died she was my grandmothers mother and her name was Martha (nee Goodwin). My Great Grandfather remarried. My Grandmother was called Martha Jones and her date of birth was 21st April 1888, her place of birth was at Lord's Hill Baptist, Brecon Road, Builth. Chapel I would like to find and visit her place of birth

I was born near Builth, and spent my formative years there.A delightful town, friendly people, what else can I say. i left the high schol in 1965, moved away. But my family still liive there and i return weekly to the town that i still regard as "home". These days there is plenty to see and do. Newcomers have mixed well with the Builthonions. Buith will always feel like home to me.

I grew up in Builth, its a nice place for the scenery, but a horrible place for a young person to live!! its full of narrow minded...people who hate anything that is slighlty different! the whole town revolves around a pathetic rugby team... me and a few mates started a good little music scene at the jimmy willies bar for about a year, bringing in bands and alternative people from all over south wales, it was great, until the narrow minded...put an end to it!

I read that some of my family came from Builth Wells moving to South London in the early 1900's. They had three sons Alfred, Percy and Frank. Can anyone shed any light please to this family and if there are any relatives still there?

My husband was born and bred in builth wells, when we met he moved here to ebbw vale with me 2 get married and start a family. I had never been to builth wells until meeting my husband and now I think it is the ideal place to raise my children away from the littered streets and violence here in ebbw vale, we would love to live here but my husband had cardiothorasic surgery last year and due to this he is unable to work and we have our rent payed at the moment, because of this we are having problems finding a landlord that is willing to accept rental payments through the council until my husband is well enough to work, if anyone knows of a three bedroom house to rent in the builth wells area where the landlord would be happy to accept us at the moment please could you get in touch with us!!! Thank you ever so much!!!

I have just found this site and to my amazement one of the ladies that wrote about Builth is my cousin (Wendy Fostiak from Arizona) who I have not seen for many years. Infact, I have a memory of the day that she and her parents where outside her grandparents house saying goodbye before going to America. It would be nice to get in touch with her after all these years.

Ex Builth Wells.
Its a great place to go back home to, for the RWAS and xmas, great walks with the dog, reminds me of my youth spent fishing in the irfon and wye. It is a bit like groundhog day though, the same people are sat at the same chairs in the fountain, 15 years after I left, you can sit down and carry on the rest of the conversation, suppose I like that though, comforting, you always have a home to go back to. The kids don't seem to go to school any more, they just hang about the Groe all day, not even in uniform.

I was born in Builth and still think of it as home even though I have not been back there since 1976. I'm lucky enough now to be in a town in the Weaver Mnts of Arizona that reminds me so much of home. If you're lucky enough to live there or visit give my love to the place.

Hi i'm just wondering if a local person could help me, Builth wells as been mentioned as a possible place where my great grandad was born in 1848. His name was Richard Davies. his dad was a farmer, Richard did leave the farm, but at what age I do not know he lived for meany years in Wolverhampton with his family and died in 1919, I cannot find a trace of him in any Gov, records.

Lyn,
My Great Grandmother was born (?) and grew up at The Grove, Builth. The wedding to my GG grandad was in the local paper, we're talking at least 100 years ago, to Abraham Beasley. What was my grans maiden name? And how do I get further with this? Has The Grove got records? Could Builth's local paper help? Also, I believe I have relatives buried in the churchyard. Any local knowledge would be a help? Is The Grove a pub or b and b? Thank you very much for your time.

Builth is a wonderful place to live, very rural, so we must retain adequate Services for the people of Builth and catchment area also beds to help bed blocking in District General Hospitals. Builth should also keep The Strand Hall. There is no building large enough to hold concerts and public meetings and it has a superb sprung dance floor upstairs.

Jennifer and Helen Lewis, Brynna, South Wales
An addition to the note by cousins Bryan, Jim and Andrew Lewis: My sister Helen and I also grew up at Builth Road, and were yet another branch of the "Lewis Railway children". Builth Road was an idyllic place to grow up in, at a time when children could run free in the countryside without fear of the kind of dangers facing the children of today. Although I (Jennifer) have lived abroad for many years, I have now returned to live in Wales and love to visit my childhood village whenever possible.

Builth wells is an unique town, its a town in someway's you will neverforget. Beautiful countryside that entices itself into your memory. Its sense of community make it a stepping stone for whatever you decide to do later on in life. My job takes me all over the world but when I have five minutes, when I wish for a sense of well-being, that old phrase "Home is where the heart is", describes my town, my place of Birth, my Builth Wells.

Builth Wells is heaven! A fantastic place where everybody and I mean everybody is friendly. The pace of life is spot on. Those that think otherwise should live in a big city. You only have to go in the hills or the nearby country side to realize that there is a god. I've been to Builth every year for the past 25 years and I long to move there and be part of it.Its a great place to be try it!

The best thing we ever did was move to Builth from England. My sons have grown up in the safest, most friendly, caring community that it's possible to find. Both the schools are superb; they've had the best education I could imagine, with staff who fall over backwards to do their best for all their kids. It's a glorious little town - you can get everything you need in Builth. Real shops, real people. Wonderful! For all of you not so fortunate as to live here - come and find out for yourselves!

Builth
Builth wells is a close knit community, everybody's related to everybody else, everyone knows the ins and outs of everybodys lives. But once you see the beautiful countryside, and the way of life there, you know you could live there contented and comfortably, as for the show the highlight of the year cant fault it only the mass of rubbish which a lot of the locals and children from the school have to clear up for a ticket the following year a disgrace i think locals should be paying a small price to enter, as we put up with the noise down the street, the traffic problems and the smell of urine, and lets just hope that this year well see a lot of support from the visitors to keep our hospital open.

I was hoping to get a flavour of what Builth looked like having never visited the town. I can only conclude that all people do there is para glide and ride horses around a track! Surely the photograhic society could present a truer picture of the town and its surrounding area?

The town is what you make it, people are friendly but are too keen to stab you in the back, which is a shame. Could be a great place if certain people minded there own business. There are worse places to live.

Builth has developed a great deal since the 18th century, when it was a struggling market town. SO now we have to learn about it. Brilliant. Nah, not really, Builth is great for families and everyone is really friendly.

Builth wells is a close knit community. It has people who care for one another especially the local peope who have lived there for years My auntie & uncle live in Builth, they have been married for 61 years, they are both 83. They have always welcomed us with open arms, even for last minute visits. They are well known in the village and have many many friends. I have visited them every year since I was a small child.I'm now 45-46. Builth is a homely town. Well known for it's beautiful surroundings & wild life.

...Builth Wells is the sort of place where everyone knows everything about everyone......or so they think. This is a good thing in the respect of everybody seems to look out for each other and each others children. Its a great place to bring up your family...The surrounding countryside is absoutely amazing. The views from the top of Garth Hill and the Castle are Fantastic.

The towns facilities aren't all that spectacular considering there isn't really much to do other than drink! Which is probably why the towns people have different opinions on which pub is the best one to go to!

Its a great tourist town and the town relys on their visitors for the trading. Can't say anything more, have to get back to work!!

Builth is a really friendly town. I moved here six years ago, the locals were keen to invite me on nights out and introduce me to their friends. The best pub is easily the White Hart with live entertainment and a night club above. The best cafe is Cafe Fontana and the lion hotel (with new owners) is superb for evening meals.
