Brave the Beacons

Cyclists

Last updated: 30 May 2008

Brave the Beacons is a new event to test the skills of the toughest athletes. In May 2008 Suzy Edington of Action Medical Research told us more about the challenge:

"On the 13th September Action Medical Research will be holding their first ever 'Brave the Beacons' challenge setting off from Talybont. This full day multi-activity event is an exciting alternative to the usual 9-5!

Teams of 4 will take part in the 5-stage event that will test their endurance, teamwork and skills. The diverse challenges include orienteering, mountain biking, canoeing, trekking, running and even abseiling and climbing; all of which takes place in the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The aim of the day is to pick up as many points in each stage as you can in the allotted time.

CanoeingPoints are allocated for each check point the teams go through, to collect more points they will have to take on the longer or harder routes and go through more checkpoints without running out of time!

The stages can be completed in any order so the day can be tailored to fit the strength of each team.

The flexibility and diversity of this event means it is ideal for people of all fitness and abilities. It will be challenging and exhilarating day for everyone who takes part but mostly importantly it is a great chance to enjoy the great outdoors with friends.

RouteThe day culminates with a celebration meal in the Usk Inn which was '2004 and 2005 Welsh Pub of the Year' where the winners will be announced and the awards will be presented.

Why take part?

Each year in the UK 50,000 babies are born prematurely and 70,000 newborn babies need special care. Tragically, more than 25 premature babies die every week because they were born too soon.

WalkerTouching Tiny Lives is our appeal to raise funds for vital medical research to reduce pregnancy complications, premature birth, and give more babies a better start in life.

With the help of Action Medical Research funding leading doctors and scientists are working hard to find better ways to diagnose women at risk of pregnancy complications, to understand why premature birth occurs and find ways to prevent it, as well as looking for new treatments to help sick babies."

To find out more and about how to get involved contact Action Medical Research through the 'Challenge Events' section on their website which listed to the right of this page.
