Twin Towns

River Usk Lifelong Brecon resident Ieuan Williams writes about the special relationship between this market town in Powys and communities in the USA, Africa, France and the Netherlands.

"The Town of Brecon has enjoyed a twinning relationship with Saline, Michigan since 1966, with exchange visits being enjoyed not only by Civic Dignitaries but also by the Brecon Cathedral Choir and the Brecon High School Big Band.

In 1988, Brecon entered into a twinning association with Gouesnou, Brittany, France and again, as well as civic exchanges, exchanges with schools and football teams also take place.

Brecon - through its swimming club - has enjoyed a long and friendly relationship with the De Rog Swimming Club of Weert, Holland.

The town of Brecon also has Ties of Friendship with Ulundi, Kwazulu. Soldiers of the South Wales Borderers 24th Regiment fought in the Zulu Wars of 1879 at Isandhlwana and Rorkes Drift. It was at the defence of Rorkes Drift that the seven Victoria Crosses were won and they are on display in the Museum, at the Barracks in Brecon.

January 2004 will see the 125th Anniversary of these battles, which will be commemorated with a service in Brecon Cathedral. Brecon Cathedral also has on display the Queen Victoria Silver Laurels of Immortals presented by Queen Victoria to the 24th Regiment in recognition of their valour during these campaigns."

We are looking for a town in Central or North Wales that might be interested in twinning with us here in west central Brittany. Any hints?

Another eloquent piece of writing by Ieuan Williams. Readers should also look at this website's other essay on Brecon by Ieuan, called Pen Portrait. Here he gives us a lot of interesting information about the town, but in typically modest fashion, doesn't mention that he has been elected Mayor three times by popular consent. Nor would he dream of saying, that although he has very definite political views, his work as a councillor has benefited people from all walks of life and political persuasions. Quite simply he's a great advocate and ambassador for the town.............

You should visit Twin Town Africa .com(www.twintownafrica.com) as it aims to combat third world issues and assist with recycling via the UK Twin Town Scheme. It's a very worthy cause and worth a read in my opinion.

Guildford has been twinned with Freiburg since 1979. I went their as Mayor in 1989 after ten years. Still have the Video. Good idea in the early days when travel was not so easy and no European Union. Now more of a perk for council official.

Hi I am looking into the possibility of twinning Glandwr and the Celtic Blue Rock Festival in Pembrokeshire, with the african village of chimanimani, zimbabwe which has a free local community Arts and music festival very similar to the celtic blue rock festival. Any help or ideas from anyone with experience of twinning with villages in Africa very welcome.

I was in a party in Japan, when I was talking with this American. It turns out, he's from Saline (he was just as suprised to hear that I was from Brecon)! His brother was in the high school band that came to Brecon when I was in high school. He's always wanted to come to Brecon (his brother loved the time he spent in Brecon). We have a connection, thanks to our 'twin towns'. Any reason to bring people together can't be bad. Another reason to be proud of being from Brecon.

I am attempting to start a web site aimed at providing a service to schools twinning with African schools. It would aim to share ideas and information and help in subtle ways. I was wondering whether you already have ties?

Is your town twinned with another? Do you think twinning's a good idea? Have you ever been on a twinning exchange - and if so, what was it like? Add your thoughts here.
