Cricket Reunion

Christ College Brecon Cricket Team pictured in 1956 It's been 50 years since they played together but on Saturday 24 June, all 11 members of Christ College Brecon's 1956 cricket team will get together for a special reunion. The school sent us this information about the event.

"The Christ College Brecon 1st XI set a record in 1956 that has never been bettered. Out of 16 games played they won 12, drew three and lost just one.

A celebration dinner has been organised at Peterstone Court, Brecon on the 24 June attended by Christ College's present headmaster Phillip Jones. The following day the team - now all in their mid to late sixties - will attend the school's open day where they will recreate the original 1st XI team photograph.

Members of the team are:

  • John Batts, originally from Hay on Wye, now living in Sydney, Australia
  • Ffrangcon Bissex, of Brecon, now living in Victoria, New South Wales
  • Malcolm Cox, of Rhymney, now in Bath
  • John Drew, originally of London, now living in Bexley
  • Michael Hendries, of Aberdovey, living in Camberley
  • Derek Hurst, from Aberdare, moved to Leatherhead
  • Alan Jones, still living in Swansea
  • Keith Jones, of Llanrhystyd, moved to Mountain Ash
  • David Smith, of Bristol, now in Corsham
  • Dave Williams, of Swansea, moved to Worcester
  • Alan Lewis, still living in Rhayader
  • Headmaster Philip Jones said: "It is quite remarkable that all eleven former pupils are getting together for the first time in 50 years to celebrate their remarkable year. Most of them have travelled the world with their jobs before settling back home, or in some cases moving much further afield and it is good that the pull of their old school is bringing them back. It will be a special day for all of us."

Yes, I was a member of that 1956 cricket XI and one of the few who played in every match that year. I attended this remarkable reunion and send my thanks to David Smith for the opportunity of meeting up with the team, and also seeing many more familiar faces at the old boys day at the school on the Sunday.

Yes: I was there, so to say. Perhaps the reunion itself was statistically more remarkable than the 1956 cricket XI record itself. One might need an actuary to state the odds! At all events ten of us owe many thanks to David Smith, to whom fell the task of organising the reunion. Needless to remark, we all enjoyed getting together once more.
