The Beacons Art Project

Fan Fawr photogrpahed by Linda Morris

Last updated: 16 August 2006

Launched in May 2005, the Beacons Way is a 100-mile walking trail through the Brecon Beacons from Abergavenny to Bethlehem. In 2006, eight artworks are to be installed at key points along the path. John Sansom is a member of the group responsible for the project.

Written by John Sansom from the Brecon Beacons Park Society:

"The aim of the Beacons Way Art Project is to have a specially designed artwork erected on each of the eight legs of the 100-mile trans park trail.

An essential feature of each of the differing art works is that they are executed in shallow relief to allow for an A4 sized rubbing to be taken from them. In this way, the walker will be able to collect a graphic memento of each section of the walk.

The existence of such artwork in the countryside might even encourage the more energetic art lover to set out in search of the object whose exact location will not be exactly defined. The images are intended to take the walker by surprise.

The Beacons Way Art Project is a joint venture by the Park Society and the Brecknock Museum Art Trust. In May 2005, more than twenty artists living and working in the locality were approached to submit proposals for the type of art works described.

In the event, 17 artists were selected and asked to provide more detailed proposals. By August the final selection was made of the eight artists to be commissioned for the final project: namely Marcelle Davies, Sue Hiley Harris, Desmond Harrison, Megan Jones, Shirley Jones, Robert Macdonald, Sally Matthews and Richard Renshaw.

In some cases, the artist will be able to create the bass relief from their graphic design. In other cases, the work will be carried out by Panico Theodosiou whose design for the Llangynidr Walls logo will be familiar to all who have walked by sections of the recently restored walls on and around Mynydd Llangynidr.

It will also fall to Panico to install the designs - each mounted on a slender monolithic structure - on site. We will try to make their locations not too inaccessible to the workers responsible for installation.

Integral to the project is the production of a book written by David Moore, curator of the Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery and published by the Littlefish Press. This will introduce the Art Trail and have information on each of the artists. It will also contain tracing paper of the right quality to make a good rubbing, once the work has been located. It is hoped that all the artworks will be in place by the summer of 2006 .

The Project is funded by Sprit2Ysbryd, The Brecknock Museum Art Trust, The Brecon Beacons Park Society, The Morel Trust, The Usk Valley Trust, The Sustainable Development Fund and The Contemporary Art Society for Wales."
