"Brecon's a bit odd! In belly dancing terms anyway!
Although there's a committed group of 'Brecon Bellies', as we are affectionately known, there is currently not a local class that is attended on a regular basis.
The original 'Brecon Bellies' began shimmying their stuff in 2004 when Layla Hague started her beginners' classes at Brecon Guildhall. These classes attracted many ladies of various age, shape and background and the group were soon performing at community events, Turkish theme nights, and were considered by many to be the major attraction at a charity event at Theatr Brycheiniog in 2005.
What is it that attracts us to this form of dance? It's graceful and alluring, very feminine and seductive without being vulgar, its movements are very fluid but disciplined at the same time, it makes you feel good about yourself.... and there's the bling!!!!
Since that time the class venue has changed twice, and due to family commitments, Layla is having a break from lessons.
However, not to be defeated, the more dedicated 'shimmiers' are still doing their thing by meeting informally at each other's houses, attending groups and occasional workshops in other areas, and arranging community dance parties such as this 'Arabian Night.
The dance party on 1st December was a celebration of Arabic dance and music and included various performances by experienced and not so experienced dancers who encouraged everybody to get up and join in.
In response to requests I've received personally, I have led community and youth workshops, mostly for charity, and have taught several beginners' classes and choreographed dances. However, the Brecon ladies really need a more experienced teacher to help us to develop our skills to an advanced level.
Is there anyone out there who fits the description?"

It is great that there are now so many bellydancing ladies across Powys, with classes in Glasbury, Builth, Llandrindod, Ystradgynlais and Llanidloes to name but a few. I am sure that all those who are keen to learn in Powys will now be able to find a class not to far from them. :-)

Just moved over from Welshpool, where I attended belly dancing classes for about a year and a half. It would be great to start getting into bellydance again.

I think it is wonderful that Wales is participating in belly dancing! I have have been involved in this art for 11 years. I dance both Middle Eastern and American Tribal Style Belly Dance. I do hope the Beacon Belly Dancers find a teacher soon!Shimmy'sTrish
