like Ted Lay I too spent time with 31coy Rasc in 1957/58.I enjoyed the town and area very much.2 lads caused trouble with the locals and spoilt it for the rest of us.Are there any more of us out there? If so get in touch.

I spent nearly a year at Derring Lines with 31 Coy Rasc, what a wonderful place the people in brecon loved us, well, pegs cafe, the camden, the boathouse, briliant memories, the civilian staff mrs price, molly who lived just outside brecon and the lovely lady from talybont, it was at the time the lorry blew up at scethrog closing the a40, so many memories, hitch hiking across the beacons to pontypridd to see the love of my life, though we never got that far i met her again 35 years later ande she had not changed, there was local lads in the camp Hugh Devereaux and Don evans from tredegar, there was also a lovely girl vera whose parents owned a pub, i could probably write a small book on my brecon, charming, quaint, homely, i come back every now and again and it is still home, love the place.

I also attended St. David's, 1947-1951, before going on to preparatory and public school. I owe much to a sound grounding in the three 'Rs'. Delighted to see a posting from Kyle Evans (2007), because I remember him well from childhood days. Please send my best wishes to Mother Immaculata, when you next contact her Judith.

I too went to school at St. Davids and was a boarder during 1958-61 with my twin sister. I wrote to Mother Immaculat and Mother Alphonsus who now live in Ireland but are not in the best of health. I have visited the sisters in recent years. The house is now used as a convent house. It was strange the smells and sound brought all the past flooding back. I believe some of the girls are now contactable through the website friends united

I visited Brecon last month as I am studying it at the moment, I thought it was a lovely town, quiet and welcoming. I would like to ask locals or people who have visited Brecon frequently whether you think tourism has had a negative/neutral/positive effect on Brecon and has it changed the environment dramatically? Many thanks

I am still waiting to hear if anyone remembers me at St.David,s Convent, Brecon. I was there from 1945-47 and was a border. It was a very happy time and although food was still on ration the Sacred Heart nuns looked after us well. Does anyone remember the pudding we called leather? My name then Wingfield.

I have been searching to find anything about St Davids Ursuline Convent in Brecon & have not managed to find anything. Can anyone help? I was a boarder at this school probably from about 1950. If there is anyone out there who was there, especially if they were there when I was I should so love to hear. Is the school still there? I was brought up in Llangenny, at the base of the sugarloaf mountain, & for me that will alays be home. Hope to hear from anyone who has any news either of the school or Llangenny. I have left my email for replies..Anna

Brecon is an amazing place. It is our escapism from the rat race and our one and only destination is the Coach House. We will shortly be visiting for the 15th time and it is like coming home each time. Tony and Marc our friends at the Coach House make every stay magical - we hate to leave.

About 15 years ago visited Brecon with late hubby, who was raised there. He was a bit disappointed at all the new tourist stores..but enjoyed showing me ""his""brecon. Many stories of his war years as a young man and the interaction with the military camp just up the street..also wonderful woman who noticed 2 strangers standing across little street..enquired if lost,,when my husband said she lived in his childhood home, she invited us in to look around..being Canadian I had never seen such a narrow house..2 up 2 down i think..wonderful visit and think of it often..his one sorrow was that many of his childhood friends were not found.

My Nanna lived at 79 The Watton. Her daughter's (my mother) best friend from school, and onwards, was Rosemary from the the Blue Boar (1960's) married to Bernard. Their children were Sandra and Rory. I remember the ducks at the rear of blue boar and a muddy pathway which led to the cow field. The river my father fished in was beyond. A money tree was the same side of the road as nanna, the cinema was the opposite side of the road. My parents and I saw Zulu there, with Michael Caine. Parents met at blue boar. mum (Betty Rogers) first saw dad through serving hatch, from kitchen to bar (now problable gone) I remember the barracks and the soldiers, who would sit me, a child, up on the bar, their mascot they would say. The lady at 74 who each morning polished her front step and bought me a black doll I called millie after the singer the lady who polished brasses at the Blue Boar.

I was brought up in Brecon and will always think of it as home. When I moved from Bedforshire I would have moved back if I could have found a house that was not in the town centre. Perhaps one day. Nowhere compares to the place although I do agree the new road has spoilt it a bit. I have many fond memories of Coleg Howell Harris and The Struet.

Born and bred in Brecon, Mount Street School, and day boy Christ College, went to Cubs and Scouts, which stood me in good stead when joined the RAF at 17 years old, did 13 years, after which did 31 years with West Yorkshire Police. Now retired and living in Spain, return to Brecon when I can, still have a few old school friends living there.

I have the great pleasure of taking visiting foreign visitors to many parts of Wales. All the comments I receive are nothing but praise about the lovely town and surrounding courtyside of Brecon. From the the 'cute sheep' to the warm and welcoming people of Brecon. Come on Brecon, fly your flag and be proud of what you have, I know I am even though I am from Cardiff!

Nice to read so many positive comments about our beautiful town. Why does our local paper - and too many local people - only ever comment on the very few negatives of living here. I returned after many years working in other parts of the U.K. and would never want to live anywhere else.Enjoy it, and appreciate how lucky we are to live here !

Brecon is becoming boring. The National Parks rule every thing around the area and stop new industry coming. If you compare it to Merthyr Tydfil which is an up and coming area and the people of Brecon flock to.
The new road system around the town has ruined local traders and I avoid town as much as I can bacause you can't park anywhere.
The positive of living in the area is the scenery and looking up at the Brecon Beacons every day does make me appreciate the area in which I live.

I've been visiting Brecon and the surrounding area for the past 4 years with a group of Yr 6 children from Hampshire. I am now teaching in The Netherlands and have agreed to fly home for the weekend just to take another group to Brecon from my old school!
I love the area, it's an ideal place to bring children to explore. Their amazement when they have reached the top of Pen-y-fan is heart warming.

I have live here for 54 years man and boy and have seen Brecon evolve. In the light of current criticism about the changes that have taken place in Brecon I am gladdened by all the comments that people have posted on this page. It seems visitors have a different perspective to locals. Some Brecon people have been resistant to change of any sort and it has divided the town. The local paper only prints the negative side to people's views so it is a pleasant change to see so many glowing reports about my town.

We come to Brecon by canal boat every summer and stop for a month! My kids love the Watton playing fields and park.
Great people, warm welcome from the residents of Conway court by the canal.
Been coming to Brecon for over 30 years. Market Tavern is best pub, Old Cognac is boring, we got told off for singing, the regulars could not hear the Juke box!!!!

This years Brecon Jazz Festival was a bit of a strange affair - the atmosphere on the streets was gone due to the lack of street music. But the "Brecon Fringe" finally got itself organized and produced a brilliant little brochure of all the free or easily affordable stuff going on in the towns own venues, which were not paid for by Brecon Jazz. This gave everyone the chance to enjoy a huge variety of seriously good music for next to nothing and a good time was had.
If you missed Brecon Fringe, you have another chance to catch two of those bands again before next year - a double bill at Theatr Brycheinio! g on Sat 2nd Sept 2006 at 8pm consisting of Dr Brown's Rhythm Method (6 piece soul/R&B/Blues band) and Red-Eyed Fly (4 piece Blues/R&B band).... or you could just wait till next years Fringe!

All the comments are of Brecon town - why has no-one mentioned Derring Lines and the Barracks? My time at Brecon in 1951 was when I arrived at Brecon Station with a Sergeant waiting for me to escort the group to Derring lines. Spent eight months training with the Welch Regiment. Then, the Welch Regiment was formulated from many other Regiments to replace the Gloucesters in Korea. I was put on that draft but fortunately taken off and sent to Eritrea with S.W.B (South Wales Borderers) for eleven months or so, arriving home at Sennybridge in 1952. These are my memories of Brecon with many nights along the canal, and egg and chips in the cafe by Derring Lines. The Barracks is a wonderful place, the S.W.B came home from Eritrea and marched through Brecon and into the Barracks. Good memories.

I spent four years in Brecon as a boy/youth. I left in 1958. I returned briefly in 2005. The Beacons are there; the River Usk still flows; the Cathedral, the castle and Christ College are there. The same pubs (sad that Bernie at 'The Blue Boar' has died; the Barracks and the Regimental Museum remain. A new by-pass. The canal still provides a home for swans. However, for me, so sad, so unnecessary, such vandalism and so unutterably short-sighted no more RAILWAY. Good people of Brecon, you are so, so fortunate. Guard what you have and, at all costs, keep the meddling 'here today, gon! e tomorrow' politicians from an excess of interference.

Brecon our magical retreat away from city life. It is easy to explain what it is that makes Brecon so magical - it is the breathtaking scenary in all weathers and the warmth and hospitality of Tony and Marc at the Coach House that makes us both come back time and time again. Back there next week (2nd visit this year).

I'm studying medicine in Holland because I didn't get into Wales Medical ... but plan to return to Wales and hopefully settle in a beautiful town like Brecon. The countryside is awe-inspring and the Welsh are truly a wonderful people who need more support in preserving their heritage and culture. Putting Brecon and places in Wales on the map is a good start in the right direction.

I have lived in Brecon for twenty odd years and I love everything about it except. I know we live in a small town but even we have to change with the times. The town of Brecon has to realise that there are young people as well as the older generation who believe Brecon should stay in the dark ages and not allow any modernisation to come to Brecon.

I was born only a stone's throw from Brecon but never visted the town until last year when I was 61! A lovely, quaint, homely city made all the more memorable by the excellent care home which looked after my mother splendidly during her last few months. We have plans to return next month and spend time exploring the city and its surroundings properly, and to sample the true hospitality of the land of my fathers.

Brecon is a magical place that is relatively on our doorsteps and yet we expend lots of money to travel far and away to Scotland and Western Ireland etc.
It has plenty of oldie worldy pubs and shops to visit and is spotlessly clean throughout...Brecon seems to exist at a more relaxed pace and there is also Llangorse lake just outside of town that offers boat trips, paddling and pony treking...Also - don't forget the hiking (if you have the energy) and the cracking music festival each year...altogether a wonderful experience. I would love to live there but can't afford the property prices and it would take long to commute to my place of work in Cardiff each day...
