Borth Station Community Award

Last updated: 28 June 2007

Two rail enthusiasts from Borth took on a new challenge by adopting the village's Victorian railway station. Plaques officially marking the adoption of the station were unveiled on 7 March 2006.

In June 2007 the station adoption group collected the Network Rail Environment Award for 'Community Partnership' in 2007.

The Adopt-a-Station scheme is run by Arriva Trains Wales. The aim is to involve local people in caring for and taking pride in their local railway station. Based in Machynlleth, Tony O'Donovan is a station manager for Arriva Trains Wales:
"The aim of the scheme is to improve the facilities for the people who use it. All stations along the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth line have been adopted apart from Dovey Junction."

My late uncle, Joe Johnson, was the stationmaster at Borth in the late 40s early 50s before he moved to St Ives in Cornwall. I have spent many holidays in Borth as a child (and later at St Ives) and have a photograph sitting on the steps of the Grand dressed as a flower seller at the annual carnival.

I lived in Borth with my 2 daughters from 2002 to 2005,and found Borth station very bleak especially in the winter. There is really nowhere to shelter except for 1 bench in a little covered area which stank of urine.I used to walk my dog near there and often came accross youngsters using drugs and drinking, little wonder people bypassed it.So i'm glad volunteers have adopted it as it could be a nice little station to go with the village and the friendly people who live there.Perhaps some more seating and a shelter would be a start, and it's a pity someone couldn't start up a cafe, particular when trains are delayed,as it would be nice to go and have a warm drink or something whilst you are waiting. Also there are no taxis in Borth,so people who are visiting the area and staying on one of the caravan parks the other end of Borth have to walk carrying heavy suitcases and travel weary children.I'm visiting Borth in 2 weeks and knowing this plus being disabled will be getting off at Aberystwyth and getting a taxi to brynowen caravan park, adding to the expense.

Good Luck with your adoption. I have tended the gardens at Green Road in Cumbria for over 25 years and it is very enjoyable, most rewarding. These chaps are to be applauded. Anything that cheers up these stations is most appreciated by passengers.

I am very pleased with what you have done with the train station and I hope that you can make it even better, not that it needs much more help. Hopefully the way you have decorated the train station will encourage more people to use Borth station.

Do trains stop, start, pass through? Or do you have moving platforms on your adopted thingy. In our village we have a station road, 2 mill lanes,a brewery lane each without (queensburyvillage website) we do have the Black Dyke Band.
