"Borth School needs some help in gathering together its history. The school will be opening the doors to all visitors and old pupils with a celebration day in the summer term. We are asking for help with preparations for the big day.
We have a number of photographs of the school from those early days and some images of events and past pupils, but we need more. The idea is to put together a display of photographs in the school hall and to try to identify as many old pupils as possible.
The children will be helping to get in touch with past pupils from the school.
We want to put up a map of the world to show where some of our old pupils now live. We want to hear from everyone that attended the school even if it was only for a short period. These days people travel all over the world and settle in the most unexpected places it would be good to know what has happened to some of the old Borth children.
It is known that 95 children between the ages of five and eighteen attended the Morfa School in 1824. This was a church school and in 1842 the National School was also built by private subscription of Church people.
The occupations of the parents of the children of this school are of interest. There were thirty sailors, four farmers, five blacksmiths, four cobblers, one carpenter, one school master, two tailors, one cooper and several labourers.
Children from Uppingham public School were brought to Borth due to an outbreak of fever at their school.
On Monday March 27th 1876, a goods train complete with eighteen trucks arrived at Borth and then proceeded the unloading of three hundred bedsteads. An outbreak of fever had compelled them to seek new and healthier pastures while the sanitation of their school was being improved.
The remarks of the headmaster give us a clear impression of what education meant for them and expresses their attitude towards conditions in Borth.
'At a football match at Sir Pryse's field in Bow Street, we heard the unintelligible cries of the Welsh rustic children.
Some of our party tasted the painful pleasures of the poor in the scant accommodation and the naked simplicity of cottage lodgings.'
This is a celebration form the 1960s onwards.
The early history is very interesting but we want to concentrate on what has happened at the school since the opening of our new school on July 12 1968.
If you have any old photographs of the school or of events at the school please bring them to the school now so that they can be copied. They will be returned to the owner.
We want to keep a record of what has happened at this school and hopefully produce a little book about the history from 1968 to the present day.
Any images that are brought in will be scanned and then returned. It is very important the as much information is written on the back of the image. Please use a pencil, so as not to damage the image. We would be very pleased with any help on this project."
So if you know of anyone who attended the school or are in touch with ex-pupils from Craig yr Wylfa school please get in touch by writing to Mr. Emlyn Jones c/o Criag Yr Wylfa Primary School, Francis Road, Borth SY24 5ND
