  • Jasper Fforde - Suggested by John Powell from Brecon. After working in the film industry for 13 years, Jasper Fforde published his first book 'The Eyre Affair' in 2001. He's since written a further three novels based on the adventures of literary detecive Thursday Next. Jasper Fforde lives in Talgarth in Powys.


  • Arthur Conan Doyle - Was Arthur Conan Doyle inspired to write his famous novel after staying at Baskerville Hall in Clyro, Hay-on-Wye? Some say 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' is based on the local legend of 'The Black Dog of Hergest' which Doyle heard while staying in Clyro. The book itself is set on Dartmoor. Add your thoughts.

  • Richard Collins - His book, 'The Land As Viewed from the Sea', was on the shortlist for the Whitbread first novel prize. He lives near Aberystwyth and is a part-time lecturer at the Institute of Rural Studies in Llanbadarn. More...

    Jean Farmery, Machynlleth
    Shoo Rayner lived in Pennal in the late 80`s and early 1990`s.... now in Gloucester . Shoo is a well known and popular childrens writer and illustrator.

    Monica Lomow from Water Valley, AB., Canada
    Mr. H. L. V. Fletcher. Lived in Llandrindod Wells, where he taught English at the Grammar School. Wrote fiction and non-fiction. Fiction often set in Radnorshire, in particular "Forest Inn", set on Radnor Forest.

    Geraint Roberts
    Two nominees: Rod Duncan - Crime novelist of recent 'Riot' trilogy set in modern Leicester. (Backlash/Breakbeat/Burnout). Born in Aberystwyth and attended North Rd, Plascrug and Penglais schools. Will Troughton - Local historian, published books on Aber include Aberystwyth Harbour and the excellent Aberystwyth Voices, a selection of quotes from old residents about all aspects of town life in days gone bye. Plascrug and Penglais educated and still based in Aber.

    Ross Jones
    Geraint Goodwin: Newtown/Llanllwchaiarn author who died in 1941, his novels "The Heyday In The Blood" and "Watch for The Morning" are set in Montgomeryshire and the Newtown area. He captures the local dialect and countryside of the early twentieth century most evocatively. Although his books are not now in print, second hand copies are still to be found, both hardback and paperback. Once referred to as a second Thomas Hardy, he creates the rural communities of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century with charm and humour.
