When and why did you start writing?
In 1950. Bridgend Junior Technical College. Handwritten newspaper - The Tec Express.I sold four at two pence each. I spent the money on chips.
How long did it take you to write your first novel and how did you find the process?
Parang took eight months, relatively easy. I enjoyed the research and polishing the drafts. I intended Parang to be a television script but opted for a novel instead.
How did you feel when you found a publisher for Parang?
Strangely, not surprised. The realisation came later.
What themes does Parang deal with?
History, events, people. The people are wholly fictitious.
Do you draw inspiration for your writing from your locality?
Yes, without a doubt. A magnificent place to live and work.
Who are your influences as a writer and why?
I was brought up during the Second World War, and for years was spellbound with all the great novels that came out of that conflict. The Cruel Sea, The Caine Mutiny, From Here to Eternity, The Naked and The Dead, The Young Lions.
What are you reading at the moment?
An Act of Courage by Allan Mallinson.
What are your plans for the future?
Travel, watching the Rugby World Cup in 2007 and possible short story writing. It depends on the creaks and groans.
