Seashore Explorer

Cartoon featuring children and rock pools In April 2006, the Countryside Council for Walespublished a wildlife guide to help children explore the wealth of wildlife on our nation's seashores. Read on for more details and where you can get a copy.

"The Seashore Guide is published by the Countryside Council for Wales and is crammed with pictures of fish, snails, sponges, sea squirts, worms and birds you can find on seashores around Wales.

Rock poolsThe Guide has lots of facts about the seashore and its wildlife together with seaside activities for children of all ages. There are also activities to try out at home. These include being a beach detective, making a 'goggle box' to watch animals in rockpools and creating a multi-coloured 'sandscape'.

Points can be scored throughout the book and, if you get enough, you can apply for a Countryside Explorer Certificate.

Sally Ellis, who worked on the project for CCW said: "The Seashore Guide is great to take down to the beach, along any part of Wales' 1,600km coastline."

"It will tell you about the strange animals that live in the area between the tides and give you ideas for exploring nature and having fun."

Some interesting facts revealed in the Guide:

  • Seaweeds are used to make toothpaste;
  • Sand masons make a tube to live in by gluing sand grains together;
  • An octopus has three hearts and blue blood
  • Limpets start life as boys and then become girls
  • For your free copy of the Seashore Explorer Guide. please ring CCW's Enquiry Team on 0845 1306229, or email Enquiries@ccw.gov.uk"
