Location: SN195519, 7 miles north of Aberystwyth. Short description: Borth boasts a three-mile stretch of sandy beach which is backed for the most part by a pebble storm beach. There are rock pools at the south end of the beach where you'll also find the RNLI station and a small slipway. The beach then extends for approximately 3 miles northwards. The first two miles or so are intersected by groynes.

As my oldest sister was 15 yrs older than me I was about 7 or 8 when she got married...we went on holiday and her and her new husband joined us for the week......it was madness in the van with so many of us...my sister and her husband where given the pull down double bed in the dinning area and my other sisters had the bunk beds and where ever possible camp beds where squeezed in...I slept on a camp bed squeeed in the gap between the 2 front setee's..my dad one side and mom the other setee....all fine till somone wanted the loo...I remeber a shop along the high street where we could buy Ice cream ! and bucket n spade's......unfortunatly my mom died when I was 14 in 1974 and I've never been back......but this last year or two I've decided its time and maybe finally I can face going back......I'm excited at the thought but also frightened...

I've a few photo's from the time but not many....One photo was of me in a brand new dress- a rare thing as being the youngest of 5 girls I'd have all the hand me downs.....I was sitting outside the static van my mom was on the Sunlounger my dad behind her and 2 of my sisters behind me- I'd got pride of place in a deck chair because of my new dress....I felt like a princess...I'd fanned the skirt of my dress out so as to show off as much of the dress as possible....usually being the youngest I'd have been chucked on the grass by an older sister...but not this time....I couldnt get grass stains! on my new dress.

Every year after when we went with our bucket and spade I'd be frightened I'd find a bomb....but you never voiced your fear.. but there where millions of happy memories....I also remember one year me and my mom caught the train from the midlands.....my mom had asked the railway man if the train was going to Borth "oH yES"....SO on we got...we'd been on the train some time and then my mom started to get nervous......yes we were in wales but we'd started to go thru tunnels......she called the conducter....we were on the wrong train...I think we were heading to barmouth....Yes we'd asked before we got on but ! the story went it was the train to borth in the week but not on a saturday or something like that....so we had to get off at the next station and catch a train back a few stops and then get another train...to me it was exciting but I know my mom was really upset.....a journey of a few hours took forever......at the time it was just me and my mom.....my dad would join us a few days later usually because one of my older sisters was doing exams ....????

I remember one exciting night when a car went down to bring in a boat and the tide was coming in....the car got stuck so another vehicle went to help...and it got stuck and then another vehicle went to help...it got the 1st car out and before it could go back to help the 2nd vehicle the 2nd vehicle had got itself out of trouble........of course loads of people had gone to help pushing and pulling and shouting advice and encouragment.......it was better than watching TV..i was only about 9 or 10 so to me it was really exciting... but then I also remeber being out-voted 4-1 the vote was to stay and watch a w! ar time bomb being blown up by the army down at Ynslas...my older sisters wanted to stay but I didnt I was frightnend- I thought we were all going to be blown up...I was probably only 5 or 6 at the time.....

Oh the happy holidays we used to spend in Borth......I'm the youngest of 5 girls and my dad used to pile us into the back of his works van.......we'd sit face to face in the back sitting on our suitcases... singing songs...to pass the time....were all going on a summer holiday and 10 green bottles and more.......we'd drive along the coast road and then turn left at the top of borth high street- the caravan site was then on the right I think it was called bynowen? My dads boss had a static caravan that he let out to his staff....we used to go 2-3 time's a year....the old lady in the next caravan liv! ed on site all year long and she was very old the 1st time I met her and 10 yrs later she was still the same age!!...she used to spoil me with sweets I remember the night time runs to the toilets which luckily for us was within site of our van....and the penny arcade ....it had an old machine with cups and a spinning wheel...the idea being you filled the cups with pennies and when so many pennies filled the cups the weight would tip the cup up and thats your winnings.....simple but hours of fun.....of course many pennies missed the cups- but it was great and exciting when the penny landed in a cup!! and even more exciting when the cup tipped up!

I remember holidays camping in a field at the rear of the corner shop - a farmer's field with a stream running at the boundary ( nearer the farm a crude toilet was rigged over the same stream!) There was one old single decker bus converted to a "holiday home" but otherwise it was tents only. All this was pre war and by taking the train from home we went there during the war.........Dad having sent a box of food and utensils by rail ahead as the car was laid up during the war. On occasions he was unable to accompany us due to the pressure of war work. Happy, innocent days in unspoilt Borth - I don't ever remember it raining but being Wales, I guess it must have happened! At the end of the war we had a ride out to sea, courtesy of the British Army in a DUKW - an amphibious landing craft
