RE:drawing

Work by Gaia Persico

Last updated: 19 June 2008

In June 2008 Oriel Davies announced the Prize Winners for the Gallery's third biennial Open exhibition, RE:drawing. Matthew Richardson from the gallery told us more about the competition:

"With an exhibition running from June 14 - August 2 2008 four of the 44 exhibiting artists have been selected by the judging panel to receive awards.

The overall 1st Prize of £1000 went to Gaia Persico, an artist based in Wrexham, while the Student 1st Prize of £500 was awarded to Swansea based PhD student, Richard Monahan. Both of these artists have also been given the opportunity of solo exhibitions at Oriel Davies during summer 2009.

Work by Nina Ogden Nina Ogden, who is from Dolgellau, was awarded the overall 2nd Prize of £500, while Carmarthen-based Joseph Fletcher was presented with £250 for winning the Student 2nd Prize.

In addition to these awards there is an opportunity for exhibition visitors to vote for the People's Choice Prize. This Prize Winner will be announced Monday 21 July 2008.

The purpose of RE:drawing is to demonstrate the ways in which many contemporary artists are interrogating drawing practice through a rich array of work.

Work by Richard MonahanThe exhibition reveals, although not exclusively, ways in which drawing might exist beyond the role of the preliminary sketch or as a method to perfect form, tone or composition.

In so doing, it brings together animation, video, sculpture, print, installation, the sketchbook and photography, amongst other media, to stimulate, challenge, entertain and promote a wealth of creativity.

Although the works are diverse there are a number of connecting concepts, processes and phenomena present in the show.

Work by Joseph FletcherThe exhibition contrasts work produced using sophisticated, often technological, tools and materials with pieces created from everyday, ubiquitous objects, contributing to discussions surrounding mark-making, line, form and composition.

This year's selection and judging panel comprising Nigel Prince (Curator, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham), Yvonne Crossley (previous Jerwood Drawing Prize selector), Sue Williams (Artist, shortlisted for Artes Mundi 2006) and Alex Boyd (Curator, Oriel Davies Gallery)."
