  • Artwork by Michael Morgan...

  • Name:
    Mike Morgan.

    Where do you work?
Art Department, Llanfyllin High School, Powys.

How would you describe your work?
As an artist I am interested in texture, surface, colour, materials and mark-making. I use these elements to form a variety of interpretations of different environments. I am particularly interested in the weightlessness of materials and how they react and interact in space. Experimenting is a fundamental part of my practice and the variety of aesthetic outcomes that appear may involve psychological, philosophical, social, cultural, spiritual or environmental issues. Art enables me to explore new concepts and perspectives and each time I explore and develop processes it enables me to see and to perceive and to enjoy the world from a fresh view.

How did you get started as an artist?
By following a Fine Art education at Sheffield University.

Do you draw inspiration from your local area?
Yes, lots of textures, marks, arrangements and natural forms and effects of weather and light are very inspirational to my work. I am fascinated by looseness, freedom, layering and space in art and find artists throughout history influential. I enjoy the work of Titian, Debuffet, Yves Kline, Cy Twombly and a variety of movements such as Baroque, The Impressionists, Post Impressionists, Dada, Pop Art and a whole range of contemporary artists working today.

Where has your work been shown?
    Sheffield, Manchester, London and Llanfyllin.

I think your work looks pretty cool. It interests me. It also interests me that you are a practising artist teaching art. I am a practising artist but need to gain employment in order to fund my practice. Would you advise teaching as a good career?
